Probably the only player this year that didn't get arrested, or did he?

I keep hearing there will be a lot of tagging this year because most teams have so much cap space.

It will be interesting to see who else gets tagged, and it could result in slim pickings in FA and heavy competition for the slim pickings.

At least they retain their draft picks [/sarcasm] by giving them 3 bucks on the dollar

He would've been an interesting prospect. Oh well, gotta look elsewhere now.

maybe.. teams dont necessarily want to overpay.. plus, if you have a center or guard (dockery ,eg) you do not necessarily want to be paying them OT money

cincy is going to have a lot of money tied up in the d line (they signed geathers a few weeks ago).. probably means some players might not get re signed elsewhere...

I liked him as a potential free agent acquisition. Oh well, onward and upward.

me, too... looks like we will have to look elsewhere to strengthen the D line.. good thing is that it is a position of strength in the draft.

also there will be second tier linemen out there in free agency that might do well for us..

What is it, like the average of the top 5 or 10 at his position? That's not too bad. Sometimes, we let folks walk so that we can give that to FA folks who haven't earned it.

8.6 million for Smith. Thats ridiculous. 41.5 sacks in 6 years is decent, but not worth nearly 9 million a season.

I think they'll sign him to a 1 year tender and if he performs, they'l Shaun Alexander him. If not, they'll trade him or let him walk. In any case, I think it's worth $9M for one season to find out if he is an elite player. The ball is in his court; let's see what Smith does,

I guess, but Smith has had 6 seasons to prove what he is. And he's a good, but a 4.5-5 million dollar end. I could seeing a team doing that with a 3rd year end or something, but 9 million for Smith buggers the imagination--especially with Robert Geathers just signing a new deal.

Hey, who knows, maybe they intend to trade him for less than the 2 first rounders he would cost a team to sign him away? We'll see how this goes, I guess.

I have a hard time believing that the Bengals are going to keep Smith for that kind of pricetag. I think they're using the franchise tag to give the team some kind of leverage to get longterm deal done, or see if they can squeeze some compensation out of any team that wants to sign Smith.

I don't think there's any way they can pay 9 mil to a 6-7 sack a year player. I don't think the tag will last for long.

i agree.. that is simply too much for the kind of productivity.. if they can, they will be dumping him in a year or 2 depending on the structure of the contract

im thinking they have in mind a trade. id consider trading our first for smith, their first, and a third rounder.

i do not see any team paying 2 first rounders for his services..my guess is that this chills interest in him quite a bit.. maybe cincy gets a 1st round offer for him..
but no way he works out to be worth the 5th overall selection

might be worth considering, although we do not upgrade our pass rush much.. probably might give us a shot at willis.
we would have a very solid line against the run, but not much of a pass rush

Wow. No way Justin Smith's worth near the franchise salary. He's a solid all around DE but the franchise tag is a elite player salary and he's nowhere near that. Well I guess if they can afford it......

that is simply a move to establish his trading value and hold him until they can work out a long term deal.. i do not see them keeping him at that salary

It's risky for the Bengals IMO. Smith's a pretty good player he knows he could get a contract somewhere else so if he plays his cards right he really has the Bengals by the balls here. Most players are angry when they get the franchise tag so it wouldnt surprise me if the following is Smiths general thoughts.

Smith: Hey if I just ride this out, keep doing what im doing and dont sign a long term deal I pocket 8.644 million this season. On a long term contract the way the Bengals probably want it I probably have to play 3 years to make that kind of money and hey who knows about career ending injuries? So if the Bengals dont want to pay up bigtime why not just ride this out into pocketing over 8 million this year?

Basically what im saying is the Bengals are not going to get him cheap after this. Argueable there going to have to overpay because of it. Smith holds all of the cards here.

This is a really puzzling move for a player of Smith's caliber. There are any number of DE's in the league and in this draft who can give you 6 sacks a year and do a decent job defensing the run. Almost 9 mil. a year? The GM has been smoking crack with his players.
