Say what he will about the name but Potomac Drainage Basin? Where is this guy from? Tell me some great town like Cleveland or Milwaukee. He can take his pc bs elsewhere. We've heard all the arguments such as "darkie" and the like already. TMQ must mean This Week's Queer.

Easterbrook is primarily a political journalist who writes a lot for The New Republic magazine. Much of his article here is done in a jocular fashion. He's right about the name, though. The Skins are going to lose that one in the courts. Pressure for a name-change will become much stronger then.

I used to read his article for a few weeks, it got tired real quick. His argument is nothing new, I read the same crap at least once a week in one newspaper or another. The only way they change "Redskins" is if they lose licensing copyright, and the money that comes along with it.

I don't think we'll switch names right away if we lose in court. Give Snyder a while to evaluate if a big chunk of money's being lost.

As for Easterbrook, well, I like his column myself. Call me wacky.

I think that's exactly correct.

Although my personal feelings for the name are what they are and well documented here, this guy's act has gotten old fast. I thought I read somewhere that he is from Bethesda, so he and Snyder may have had a fender bender in the past and he is exacting his revenge.

He's totally right about the name but what pisses me off about people like that is that if he wants to help a very just cause like preserving native american culture then all power too him. But if all he's doing for it is sitting on his butt and writing columns then he and all those people can honestly go **** themselves. If he got a chance to do something about it, I think it's safe to say he and all the other armchair QB's would continue to sit on their ever widening tuches.

:D I love that.
I'm from Bethesda and I haven't gotten so much as a middle finger from Snyder. What, does he think he's too good to flip me off or something? :sfight:

Well, if our name had to be changed, what do you guys think about the name "SKINS?" I don't know if anyone suggested it but if we used the name Skins, then we could still keep the majority of our "traditions" like the fight song, name (somewhat) and we could still say "Go Skins".

"Skins" is a more general term and could mean anything (I'm thinking animal skins....you know, skinning an animal). You could still use the Arrow imagery and even a distorted version of the "Indian Head"....like in a shadow design or something. The issue with the name Redskins seems to come from the "Red" more so than the Skins (IMO).

I can see how they could take the name, but the logo? No way that can be considered degrading...how can they take that?

I mean anyone can put the name Redskins on a Burgundy/Gold hat and sell it.....as long as it isn't "Washington Redskins"

We should just wear the spear helmets from here on in...

I think the frontrunner would be the Warriors.

My question is this, How much money would we lose if we changed the name?

I mean the Bullets did it, and now everywhere you turn, people have Wizard stuff. I suppose the initial layout of money to change all of the stuff would be quite large but wouldn't that be better then paying off someone in a law suit?

Listen, the guy that wrote this article had a few good (but tired) points, however, he's a jerk for starting out the article the way he did.

Let's start a thread with our suggestions for a new name. Have you done that before?

I like Warlords. Washington Warlords. Conveys some of the power and martial history of the area. Also, it would go well with the fight song.

Hail to the Warlords
Hail victory
Soldiers on the warpath
Fight for old D.C.!

We have, but no reason why we cannot do it again.

I'm not a fan of the Page 2 journalists. Too 'hip' or 'cute-sy' for me, I guess. I'm a supporter of the name and logo and will be dissappointed if we are deprived of them someday.

I will be sad when they change the name, but Dan will probably hold out for a little while. There will be enough die-hard fans that will want the official gear, so there will be loss, but not a whole lot, IMO.

How about just dropping the name REDSKINS and not replacing it the team would be Washington same logo still headquarter at Redskin Park leave everything the same just dont rput the word redskins on any merchendise just the logo. The logo would still be copywrited right ?

Yes, the logo would still be copyrighted. I doubt the NFL would approve that situation, though. The NFL head office has the right to veto any team name or name-change. My guess, and it is only a guess, is that the NFL would require all teams to have a name in addition to their city/state identification.
