View Full Version : A New Name for the Team

Spence
08-28-2003, 11:48 AM
For the purposes of this thread, please put aside your views on whether or not the Redskins should change the name of the team. Assume the franchise continues to lose in the courts and copyright protection is utterly stripped from the team. The owner decides a name change must be done. But what should the new name be? Name it here and tell me why. No arguments about whether or not the name should be changed. Just a new name and your reason for it. Thanks.

Here is my choice, as stated in another thread.

I like Warlords. Washington Warlords. Conveys some of the power and martial history of the area. Also, it would go well with the fight song.

Hail to the Warlords
Hail victory
Soldiers on the warpath
Fight for old D.C.!

We already have 100 of those. I like both Warriors and Warlords......as a matter of fact, 2 of my Fantasy teams carry those names. I also like the alliteration (repetition of consonant sounds)....works well for both Warriors and Warlords, not so well for Wizards....

On a side note, I call the Bullets/Wizards the Washington Buzzards....a great combination of the 2 names IMO

jporterweb

Because Redskins is said to be derogatory whereas Indians is their name.(lets not forget though that Chief Wahoo looks like a psychopath)

Actually, they were called Indians in "error" by early settlers. They are now called "Native Americans", and despise being called an "Indian". "Indians" live in the country bordering Pakistan.

Maybe we should call the Skins the "Washington Native Americans"

Spence
08-28-2003, 03:04 PM
I've never liked the term "Native Americans" because it is too exclusionary. It shouldn't just apply to the people it is normally applied to. I'm a Native American. Why? Because I was born in the United States of America. That makes me a native.

I prefer to use the term Amerindian or American Aboriginal when referring to people commonly called Native American.

Although WJFK did a show on "less offensive names for the Redskins"... the top three were...

3 The Washington Casino Owners
2 The Washington Babystealers

and number 1....drumroll....

1 The Washington Idiots-who-sold-ManhattenIsland-for-$40

Anyone whose interested in the rest let me know, I wrote them down & they are all beauties. (got to love local radio...those guys really care *sniffle, sniffle*)

Lady: I posted the name "Skins" on another thread earlier today. Don't know if someone else stated it before me, but "Skins" is not in any way racist. The "Red" of Redskins seems to be most of the problem (red+skin) as it tends to indicate a certain group of people (when used with our "Indian Head" symbol). If we use skins, then we keep like 95% of our storied tradition and can still use our many logo designs (past and present). If the "Skins" name doesn't fly, then I too would go with "Warriors" and still keep the same symbol. BTW: I still think the team could honor these people by putting a museum (in fed-field or on the nearby grounds) displaying Native American culture and featuring Native American artifacts, foods (spices, etc.), pottery, etc. I think this would be a good way to turn a perceived "negative" into a "positive" IMO.:p

I'm not sure what a "wack A$$" is but I assume since it includes "A$$" you don't appreciate or respect their state championship titles [all of which were won after I graduated]

I went to GC my freshman year, was in Latin class when I heard about the shuttle explosion [the first one].

Nice, Austin.

Seeway, Ireton's got a slightly better reputation now. Slightly. The football team should be above .500 this year, and a couple other teams have a good shot at winning tournaments. It's not great overall, though.

I was thinking possibly the Braves. That is what we used to be called long ago.

Skins would also work. They can't do anything if the fans continue to call them the Redskins. The OFFICIAL name could be the Washington Skins, but we could still refer to them as the Redskins without any problems.

Yes, but we can not have a team called "The Native American Warriors". We don't need to be specific. The Chargers are not the Bolts, even though their logo suggests it.

Ireton I understand, depends on the year for O'Connell. Mid-80's and mid-90's were decent. Of course, that both correlates to future pros Metcalf and then Terence Wilkins and Casey Crawford.

I played soccer and we beat up GC pretty good as it seemed those were the guys who didn't make the football team.

In my years, Soccer and Girls Sports were the only sports that O'Connell could hang with GC, though my Junior year Pitching my only loss was to O'Connell....you guys had a good baseball team consistantly. That loss was made all good when we won the Conference Championship.......

Ok how about :

THE WASHINGTON MARCHERS

Since Washington is the home for every major march, protest, and gathering in the country

And the headlines can read "WAshington marched all over the field Sunday"

And the fans can have a new tradition of bringing picket signs to the games with cool slogans like

"SuperBowl in 2004"
"We demand the right to kick Dallas's AZZ"
"Spurrier for President"

Apparently it was interesting enough to you for you to comment on it, so I 'm not sure I believe you when you say you found it to be " dull ".

But anyway, Warriors sounds pretty good, I just like " Braves " a little better and we wouldn't have to re-do the fight song as much.

We'd have to redo the fight song, holding "Braves" for two different notes sounds really strange. Warriors would fit just fine.

That is true, I guess I was just thinking about the part that already has Braves in it.

So I guess it would be:

Hail to the Warriors
Hail Victory
Braves ( or Warriors? ) on the Warpath
Fight for Old D.C. !

You know....Warriors doesn't exactly fit right either ( three syllables on two notes )...oh well, I suppose they'll worry about that when the time comes.
