As reported by www.kffl.com:
Washington Redskins DT Kedric Golston received $247,445 from the NFL's "Performance Based Pay" system.
And he deserved it... good job last season by the rookie, hope he gets stronger, smarter, and nastier this offseason;)

I hope this isn't the reason we're trading out of the #6 pick....

I didn't see anything about Golsten in the link.
I was never aware any part of a player's pay was payed by the NFL. How exactly does this work?

He was a beast and that is why I think him, Griff, and Joe can do just fine in the middle. We don't need Branch. He is a good player but not our biggest need. This is the year of the Defensive End and I think we should get one.

True this is the year of the DE, but one????? I say trade down and draft two DE's this year. What say you?

Griff was a pleasant surprise but, well short of being a beast. He too often gets blown of the line of scrimmage with bigger stronger OLinemen. If we're relying on Griffen being our starting DT next season, I'm afraid we're in for another long season.
Although, I do agree that DE may be a bigger need at this point but, DT is also a critical necessity.

I believe it comes from a fund that all teams pay into, and is distributed by some cock-o-many rule that compares actual field time to projected field-time....if you exceed the projections, you get this money.

It's nice he got some extra cash but I think he is overrated by the fans. I'd much rather upgrade his spot in the draft and use him as a #3 guy. And sadly I think Salave'a is done. I love that dude though.

good for him....but we still need to pick a dt and a de..... doesn't look likely now though.

Why do you say that he's overrated??? He stepped in as a rookie and played ball...very good ball!! Not to mention the fact that he was drafted in a round that usually yields ZERO talent! Or look at it from this standpoint...most of the players that were drafted with him, are bagging groceries right now!

Griff had a bad year last year, as did our entire D-line! But whenever Griff was in the game, our team was dramatically better. He holds down the interior line against the run...when he was out we were getting destroyed by the run!

He just isn't stout enough to be an effective every down player. The other, earlier draftee from '06, Montgomery, has the size to be that but he is a project at this point.
What exactly is this "performance based pay" thingy.

I couldn't agree with you more. He did a great job last year considering when he was drafted and what was really expected of him. He stepped in and handle the position very well. With some more time and conditioning, he could definitely become that guy for us, though. I just hope that we can continue to find guys like this in the later rounds that can contribute to our team for years to come! I think everybody can agree on that part! :whoknows:

I dimly recall reading about this in the Post a couple of years back. Under Gibbs, the 'Skins instituted a policy of using leftover cap for the outgoing cap-year to cut bonus checks to players who had played above their salary. Happy players, no cap repercussions. Leddell Betts has gotten these bonus checks in years past, among others.

That's awesome and a brilliant idea. I can't believe it didn't get more attention, I don't recall ever hearing/reading about this.

How do you feel about Kareem Brown (Miami)?

He did a good job last year, way more that I expected from him so this is well deserved. I hope he gets better this year, because for the first time in a while we got some production out of a low draft pick. I would be ok if he started next to Griff this year.

Golston showed great promise last year. I think he may have looked better than he really is due to how bad our defense was, so when he would play like a normal D-Lineman should, he looked like a god. That being said, he made some great plays, and I hope he can continue to grow on our team. I certainly feel comfortable with him in a "depth"-type role.

I think he did alright but considering how gashed our DL was in the run game I certainly don't think he was anything special. And I don't think he's a long term starter, at least not yet. I was impressed that he played ok considering he's a late round pick, but I'd love to upgrade him and use him as a rotational guy.
The team was 27th in the league in run defense, I'd have a hard time saying any DT played very good ball on a 27th ranked run defense regardless of their draft position.

Golston worked hard and earned a spot. Butr even more so, he beat out Anthony Montogomery for more playing time and eventually supplanted Salave'a on the Line. Showed good instinct, could apply pressure to the QB and stuffed the middle pretty well. Overall, a great find late, has a good future here, and deserves performance based pay.

Amen. I like Golston, but he only played well when Griffin was in the lineup. Remember the Tennesse game? Golston and Montgomery started as our DTs. The Titans had nearly 200 yards rushing. This was the same team that hadn't won a single game all season, to that point.

But then finished out winning 8 of 10 and two points from a sweep against the Super Bowl champion... I don't think that's a fair team to assess anything.
That game's just evidence to me that Golston AND Montgomery aren't a good pairing. Golston and Griff looked better to me than Salve'a and Griff...

Exactly! People can't judge the pair as a waste, when one plays good with another partner. Hell 2 rookies are going to get burned and make mistakes, and have bad games...because they're rookies! Fans need to have a little more faith, and be happy that we have finally found some talent in the late rounds.

Golsten really stepped up in the Jacksonville game last year. I remember him getting his hands up and knocking down at least one pass. He seems to have good instincts about where the QB is reading. That was one of his early games. Later in the year he seemed to lose some steam. I mean the whole team lost all their steam in the last game against the giants. Losing the last game of the season at home with Tiki running a muck on us, and now his jersey, from that game, is on display at the HOF. That erks me to no end.

I agree completely. This kid is a hard nosed, blue collar type of guy. A Joe Gibbs type if you will

Congrats to the big G! I know many people here bemoaned the drafting of Golston (http://hailredskins.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=34383&highlight=Golston), but he was much needed.

good for him. he might turn out to be really good. he might have been a 1st round pick without inuries, and didnt he have some sort of off-the-field incident? he had better stats in college than Branch.
