Punts: Seems that tight end Johnnie Mitchell, whose latest comeback effort ended when he was recently released by Jacksonville, just refuses to go away. Mitchell's agent discovered that the Washington Redskins were auditioning free agent defensive tackle Reggie McGrew at a Jacksonville high school on Thursday morning, several hours before the preseason finale with the Jaguars. He phoned 'Skins vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato and talked him into letting Mitchell work out at the same time. . . .

Reggie McGrew is not a bad player at all, I'd like to see him replace Holseley cause he's bigger and younger

we probably are going to need another TE...don't we usually go with 3 (not that we are being "usual" this season)

Johnny is one of the most talented football players I have ever seen play, he also has wasted more talent than I have seen any other player waste. It's a shame but he has something missing upstairs, he could have been a great player.

Mitchell can't be any worse then the TE's we have now. Flemister is awful and Royal has shown me NOTHING.
I still think we should have drafted Jason Witten

The problem with the TE pos is that SS doesn't throw to them. Quick, name a TE at UF that caght many balls. That's why there was no way W. Walls would sign here. there was no compitition and more money to play here and he still figured he get more passes behing B Franks than starting for SS.
That's not to say if we had a TE with talent that SS couldn't ajust......I like Winslow down in 'Cane country. He looks better than Shockey!

I'm a big Nebraska fan, so I'm partial to Johnnie Mitchell. He is the best TE in NU history, and the fact that he was drafted so high coming out of an option school shows how talented he is. He must be a head case, cause he keeps getting all these chances, but he has undeniable talent.
McGrew is the same way, he was drafted in the first round by SF but has now been cut from two teams in 4 years. Must be something going on with him too, but every team in the league thinks it's the one who can turn these kinds of players around.

Erron Kinney, but honestly I only followed him because I played football against him in high school.

i used to think and say the same thing, but i noticed that the QBs throw to our TE's alot....they just didnt catch every pass. if we had a real threat at TE, this team could be that much better. i think we should draft a TE after we deal with the DL and S position next year......

I'm hoing that our QB threw to TEs a lot last year because the WRs didn't get open much (and DW could't get it to them if they did). This is NOT how SS system (I've lived in Gator country for the past 10 years) is supposed to work. RBs should get the throws if the WRs are coverd. Stephen Davis did quite a few passes and he was often wide open. He just seemed to lack what SS likes to see from his RBs when they catch a pass. The RBs we have now do. (Speed!)
SS system in its simplest form is create mismatches and take what the D gives you, this is why he demands much of his QBs, but what some people don't realize is it's the same for the WRs and RBs as well. When eveyone is working together is almost imposible to defend. Take what they give you short, run or pass then as soon as they cheat up, boom over the top for a TD. It's very much like the offences of the Rams and Colts.
The thing that I think SS took for granted was that the speed of the players we had from Marty ball wasn't equal or better than the defences we were playing, Marty ball was designed to go straight at you 3-4 yards at a time. If they crowded the line to stop the run just punt and hold 'em on D and force them to punt and go back at pounding the rock until there D gives in and we start getiing 4-5 yard per play (after 5 yards, players were told to dive at the nearest defender;) ). Passes were slants and outs, hence WRs like Gardener and MaCants. There was no Bomb in Marty Ball.
SS and the FO realized they need speed to make this work and boy do we have it now! If the goup of WRs and RBs and Ramsy start clicking, LOOK OUT! It's like Mr. Miogi said in The Karate Kid, "If do right, no can defend."
With that said, I think SS would be pleasanly surprised at what play making TE could add to his offense.
