I know it is early, and we will probably be signing 3 additional players tomorrow off of the rookie mini-camp, but here is a look at how I see the final roster/depth chart shaping up at this point (rookies in blue, veteran additions in burgundy):

RB CPortis LBetts MSellers RCartwright NBroughton
TE CCooley TYoder TEcker
WR SMoss ARandleEl BLloyd JThrash MEspy

DB STaylor LLandry PPriouleau OStoutmire VFox
Comments:
QB-I think Gibbs in the end keeps both veterans if healthy. While Brunell is an excellent and willing mentor to the young QBs, I am not convinced that he knows the system that well. I think they will keep Collins both as a sop to Saunders and to train the survivor of the Palmer/Hollenbach battle, who will sit on practice squad for a year and learn the system and replace Brunell or Collins on the in 2008.
RB-If they sign Blaylock, add him and subtract Broughton.
TE-Unless Edwards wows them in camp and beats out Ecker. More likely, if Ecker does not impress, they will pick up a 3rd TE off the waiver wire in Augst
WR-I liked the Deyon Williams signing, but he already has pulled a hammy and missed 2 days. We will see if Espy can keep his roster spot and keep progressing into an actual player. I am placing Randle-El ahead of Lloyd until Lloyd shows that he has changed, on and off the field.
OL-If one of the young linemen impresses, he beats out Tucker or convinces the coaches to keep a 9th OL. If Lefotu can't even earn a job in Europe, he has no chance here.
ST-There were rumors that they wanted to replace Suisham, but I don't see why they would. He performed under pressure and kicked off well. I hope he ends the merry-go-round that has existed at the position since Chip Lohmiller left what seems 1,000 years ago.
DE-Maybe Joe Sykes, Chris Wilson or Justin Hickman can step up and be the pass-rusher we are all so desperate for. Otherwise, I see the same 4 guys making the team and getting all the PT.
DT-Ditto. The only question is whether Boschetti holds on as the 9th DL, or loses out to a DE. However, don't overlook Jared Clauss. He is very similar to Salave'a, in that he has a similar build, and played for Greg Williams in Tennessee. He played pretty well there for a while, maybe like Joe he can resuscitate his career with us.
MLB/OLB-I hope that Blades makes the team on merit. Ditto with Sartz. I think Sartz has more upside, but Blades is more of a sure thing to make the roster and contribute this year. Ideally, we would be looking for an upgrade over Campbell, but we have had a hard enough time finding players to fill out our roster at LB, so I doubt Campbell gets replaced this year.
CB-We should be much, much better than last year, where Rogers and Kenny Wright were huge disappointments. Wright was a good player until he came to us, at around the same age as does David Macklin. If Springs stays healthy, this is team strength. If not, it is a weakness, as there is no true #1corner on the roster. I have Rogers starting ahead of Smoot, but I think if they are even in camp, maybe Smoot begins the season as the starter and Rogers takes the job over after his confidence (and the coaches' confidence) returns. Hopefully the competition pushes Rogers to fulfill his potential.
DB-Much depends on how quickly Landry acclimates to the pro game and how quickly he and Taylor learn to play cohesively with each other. Having Fletcher to align and advise them should help alot. Maybe he will have a positive influence on Taylor. I suspect that Landry will be starting no later than game 4 (after the bye week), but the temptation will be strong to play Priouleau because he is an experienced veteran and they missed him so much last year. I have them keeping Fox over Doughty, but I think Doughty has to show that he can earn some PT at safety.
Just food for thought. Critique away...

Thanks for the effort - it is thoughtful with a minimum of rose colored glasses. But as with most of life I can quibble, hopefully as thoughtfully as your piece.
1) Going for 9 DL for 4 positions while having 8 OL for 5 positions is risky. This would be supportable if the 9th DL was attractive to other teams. Otherwise he is the 1st FA called if season ending injuries occur. I see Boschetti as such a player.
2) Will Wade be OG? He is very tall for the position and is anything but a mauler. In fact KFFL shows Whitley as the starter with Wade b/u OT. IMO this is a position to be addressed post 6/1, with a short term solution of an older player hopefully with something left in the tank.
3) There is an investment in Doughty at S, and he plays ST. FO knew he was a project when drafted. IMO chose 2 of Stoutmire, PP and Fox. IMO Fox didn't show enough last year and the coaches love veterans. Until training camp he would be the odd man out IMO.
4) KFFL also shows Edwards and Ecker beating out Yoder. I think Ecker is the best blocker and a tall red zone target used to getting the ball when defenders are draped all over him. I don't know Edwards, but think 1 of Yoder/Edwards gets cut.
5) IMO Btoughton is camp fodder only. He would have to show red zone potential to stick, and he didn't do this the 1st time around - pad level too high.
5) I agree completely on QBs. Forget Palmer/Hollenbach. Campbell needs the mentoring that only Collins can provide.
6) K is Suisham's to lose. Agree with your comments, and look at Ks signed for training camp only to push him.
BTW, KFFL also shows Smoot starting over Rogers, and Lemar Marshall starting over MW! Do they know more than we do about MW's recovery? They also show 6 S, which I don't think will happen.

Thanks for your feedback. We seem to disagree only at the bottom at the roster. Here is my response to each.
(1) I agree with you. I have always thought you need 9 (or 10) OL, given the usual rate of attrition, guys missing games here and there. However, this projection was based on what I thought they would do, not necessarily what I thing they should do. Since Buges has come back, I think they have kept 8 OL every year. Also, this year, I am not sure that there is going to be a 9th lineman in camp worth keeping. I am not sure there is an 8th OL worth keeping (Ross Tucker), but they have to keep at least 8. I agree you need 9 D-lineman with the way you would want to rotate them to keep them fresh.
(2) I think they will look at the waiver wire, but I think that unless an established quality starter is available for a very reasonable price, Wade is the man. His contract suggests that they intend for him to start.
(3) You might be right. I like Doughty, but they played Fox last year on defense and did not play Doughty until the very end. Perhaps having Stoutmire, who I think played well last year for NO, will free them up to cut Fox and develop Doughty.
(4) I liked Edwards when he was with the Cards, but he hasn't played football in a long while. I imagine he has been out of the league for a reason, whereas Yoder proved his worth last year and is an excellent special teamer.
(5) I agree with you about Broughton, but he made my roster because I think they will keep 5 backs, Byner seems (seemed??) to like him and he can play FB. Maybe Kerry Carter beats him out. Blaylock definitely takes his spot if signed and healthy.
(6) The only person at Redskins Park who knows our offense better than Collins is Saunders. For that reason, and my belief that Brunell is done, I would keep him over Brunell if I had to pick one.
(7) I think you hit it on the head. The fact they did not bring in a name, means Suisham will be our kicker this year. If he falters in camp, they can pull someone off the waiver wire in final cuts. Veterans are almost always available.
I think GW kept 6 safeties once before, and it is not out of the question if Doughty and Fox outperform Jimoh on special teams. As far as Smoot/Rogers, that will be one of the most interesting battles of camp. I think they probably come in even.

i dont believe yoder or fox will be cut. with the drafting of landry, either stoutmire or doughty are the odd men out at safety. but isnt doughty still practice squad eligible? he may find a place there

I believe Nemo will be replaced by BLAYLOCK. I believe we DON'T carry Boschetti this time around. Instead we use Wynn as both depth in DE and DT. We also float Daniels in a DT slot, in case of Grif's abscence, giving Carter and Evans the nod on the outside.
This could also change for Boschetti, should we sign a much better DT/DE in FA or a surprise gem.
Blaylock may be a stop gap player for NOW, but you bet your arse he's thinking its his one last shot for a long stay, while producing at least his best level for us. That could translate into Rock being in serious trouble, and definitely Nemo.
If Blaylock tones down 10 lbs, he will be more than we had hoped for in a depth slot.
the other challenger is at Jimoh, and that challenger will prove they can cover, tackle a receiver, as well get picks. I had stated earlier, this was a good draft for DEPTH players, and CB was a position I mentioned. Even though we have undrafteds, Jimoh's job may be taken away, even on the level of ST's (Sartz will solidify his ST slot).

I was wondering that as well. I am not sure, he was active for several games last year. I think the cutoff is 6, but I am really not sure.

We have all been saying this for several years now, and yet he is still hanging on. It's not like he is such a great ST player, either.
I don't think the competition this year for spots is that great. This is a function of our not having kept many of our mid- and lower-round draft choices the last several years. If we had, Jimoh and Boschetti would both have been gone already (although I must admit I like Boschetti, and think he is better than we give him credit for). And we wouldn't be talking about NFL retreads like Ross Tucker, William Whitticker and Whitley as our 8th OL.

I agree in regards to Jimoh being a constant incumbent, but I think he gets dislodged this time, just my gut feeling.
Boschetti, how true, like Evans, we are at least smart enough to keep them for what they do best, at least give us solid depth. Boschetti, unlike Evans is in a "crowd". A DE that is at least much better than Evans and might even be a two position player, but much younger than Wynn (he plays DE and can play DT much better now), would send Boschetti packing, I believe. I agree on retreads issue on the OL, but it too can change, but more like in 2008 for the OL.

like your thinking i was doing this the other day with sure roster spots and at the most we have 13 undecided spots as of now.guys i highlighted i would replace with
qb palmer possibly beats out collins
rb blaylock if signed (nemo may make it as fullback)
oline i can see a young guy beating out tucker
de/dt watch out for alexander and sykes who gw really likes and was praising this weekend.(hey good point about clauss by the way i really didnt know much about him)
safety doughty may beat out stoutmire maybe im just hoping it since hes younger but whatever

I'm extremely biased here. I cannot think of any good reason for dropping a veteran QB who understands the system and can execute in on a caretaker basis, and keeping a veteran who neither understands it nor can execute it.

*I agree with JFQuinn about keeping Collins. If Palmer (or Hollenbach) has a great camp, and they are concerned about someone signing him off practice squad, I would keep Collins over Brunell. Brunell can't play anymore and Collins knows the system much better.
*I agree with you about Blaylock, I hope they sign him tomorrow.
*I hope one of the unproven youngsters in camp plays his way on to the roster, but we have been saying that for several years now, and it has yet to really happen. Maybe this year will be different. Watch Heyer and Calvin Armstrong. You can't coach size, and they both have the size you look for in an OT.
*You are right, they talked up Sykes quite a bit last year, and kept him around. He has some pass-rush potential. I thought Manupuna played pretty well in exhibition games last year, and was not surprised they brought him back for another look.
*I agree it would be nice to get younger at safety, but I think after what happened last year, they are going to want to keep veterans around who can play. I think Fox is more vulnerable to Doughty, and nothing against Fox, but I will like to see that happen.

injuries will be the big determining factor.. i am not sure PP will be ready for the opener.. he could end up onthe PUP list for 6 weeks.. that would open up another spot
if boschetti makes the team this year i will be amazed. i will also be saddened because it will speak to the lack of talent on the d line.. same with sykes.
it is one thing for a veteran like wynn to hold off a younger player. he has at least been a starter inthe nfl.. but, we better be able to dig up some young players who show enough to merit a spot as the final d lineman

What is your opinion on Lloyd being the 3rd receiver and him not starting? Do you think he listens to the wake up call?
Same as Rogers..how do you think he would feel about not starting and being the 3rd corner...Do you think he could have the attitude of the skins bringing in outside guys and having him take his place.
Do you think the skins will try to go with Smoot so that the Safety wont have to roll coverage to support Rogers most of the time?

WRT Lloyd, he will wind up in whatever slot the coaches decide after watching him in minicamp, OTAs, and TC. If he works hard and is the second best receiver in camp, why wouldn't he line up opposite Moss. If he's a jerk, that answers their question abou him and he's goodbye next season.

Brandon Lloyd lost his starting job late into last season, so I'm guessing training camp will determine if he or Randal El gets the WR2 spot. I personally prefer ARE.

Lloyd must have a huge hole to climb out of with the coaches, and probably his team mates also. Unless he is clearly the best or second best WR I suspect he will not be #3 to start the season.

With regard to the linebackers, I think Marshall is #2 at each position. I think if any of Fletcher, Rocky or MW go done, Marshall fills in.
I also have a feeling that by the first game, ARE is back in the slot where he can do more damage and Lloyd is #2.

Agree with you on both points. Smoot and Rogers both have a lot to prove. Lloyd is on a one-year tryout. If he fails this season, he may be radioactive enough that no one will touch him in 2008, even though he has talent.
Mildly disagree with you on the QBs, Gibbs loves him some veterans.
I think that the winner of Palmer v. Hollebach is stashed on taxi squad.
If he is really good, he will develop Stan Humphries' "rare blood disorder" (remember that one?) and be placed on IR for the year.
But cutting Collins for the rookie would not shock me.
Cutting Brunell and keeping Collins and the rookie would shock me. And please me no end.

With regard to the linebackers, I think Marshall is #2 at each position. I think if any of Fletcher, Rocky or MW go done, Marshall fills in.
I also have a feeling that by the first game, ARE is back in the slot where he can do more damage and Lloyd is #2.
ARE in the slot is to what Bobby Mitchell was. Outright NASTY! It's up to the coaches how to use players and their talents, abilities. You can't blame the player if the coach keeps having a certain play called, and the QB looks too long before finally rotating an errant pass to ARE, who's actually the decoy. Natrualy, he's not going to go to the press and say it was so. That' s between him and the QB in the lockerroom and during practice to work that out.
Llyod is a #2 receiver who had issues last year. He MUST put last year in a trash can, learn from its mistakes and move on. He must use his ego to get open, and his mouth to commuincate PROPERLY with his teammates, not the media to work on his and their goals. Attention is always available for those have game every game, not getting over excited about a game or two and think they own the world. You got to bring it every game or stf up

Most guys with Lloyd's character issues do NOT change their spots at his young age. Maybe he will see the light, or at least behave himself for one year if he is convinced that he is on thin ice, and if he gives a damn that he is on thin ice. He might say, screw it, I will hang on as long as I can then go home and live the rest of my life of the big signing bonus I got last year.

WRT, Smootie, when did he acquire such a good rep after his two mediocre years with the Vikes? It remains to be seen who is the second best CB, and who needs to be given more help. He and Rogers both have a lot to prove.
On Lloyd, agree. On Smoot, remember he was good enough here under this system to command a fairly big FA contract from Minn. His last two years were not good. How much the system change has to do with this I don't know but the coaches do. Smoot was also caught in the love boat affair as a principal character. This was 1 of the biggest distractions over the last two years, and Smoot probably did not react well to a negative press and fan base.
According to a now old posting on redskins.com Smoot was down 20# and working out heavily at Redskins Park. He is clearly happy to be here, or more probably out of Minn. He does not have stone hands. I think he is the favorite for #2 corner.
From other posts, 6 S seems like too much, as does 11 DBs. If 6 S are kept then Jimoh goes. This gives skinny CB depth considering SS state of health, or lack of it. IMO we keep 5 CB and 5 S. Jimoh can be beat out, but by who? Talley has the best resume but does not appear on the roster. Fox is a superior ST, but last year showed no real aptitude for S. If Jimoh goes maybe Fox stays, otherwise Doughty has upside as a S and is good on ST IMO.

Part of me really hopes Rogers steps up and solidfys his spot at CB2 in camp. We invested a really high draft pick on him and I'd hate to see him underperform in camp and then be demoted to the depth chart where he will rarely get a chance to shine. Of course, this is all up to Carlos, now.
I'm pretty content with Smoot being a CB3, as I think he would be a great nickleback. But if he wins the job outright, then I'm content with him at CB2.
That being said, I have no confidence in Springs being around for all 16 (hopefully 19) games and I could see us line up Smoot and Rogers as starters in his absence.

My final roster is Campbell, Collins, Palmer, unless Palmer has a really bad TC and exhibitions showing.
Palmer has poor technique and mechanics, and played in a spread offense (Spurrier, anyone?). He has a long way to go. Could make it if Brunell can not recover in time (PUP?). Otherwise it looks like a vet over a very raw rookie, and the FO and coaches have always prefered vets. IMO Palmer goes practice squad if he wins out against Hollenbach/Bramlett.

Agree SS unlikely for 16 games, or 19. The upgrade to CBs represented by Macklin and Smoot versus Rumpf and Wright is pronounced, and Smoot's $5M average yearly contract probably reflects that the Rogers/Smoot combo will be active during the year, perhaps for an extended period of time.

lets see if Palmer develops enough to knock off Collins, they must have seen something in him and if he becomes near the QB his brother is he will be OK

No real surprises, which can be a bad thing. I wouldn't mind seeing someone we're not really talking about come out of nowhere to make a contribution.

maybe someone other than Espy if they want a taller receiver, or someone other than Khary Campbell (like Sartz). the battle for depth at DB looks interesting with Fox, Doughty, and Jimoh, but someone can make a surprise impression on the coaches there.

How did Ross Tucker become a favorite to win a roster spot? What has he done? Played one full season?
I don't see both Daniels and Wynn returning. One should go to free up cap room.
I think one of special team stalwarts Khary Campbell, James Thrash, Rock Cartwright and Ade Jimoh is in trouble--probably Campbell.

Palmer looks like a good candidate for the mysterious "blood disorder" or fantom sideline injury this season. One year, the week before the final roster cut down, the Skins announced that Stan Humphries had come down with a "blood disorder". He was placed on IR and thus not exposed to the waiver wire. Another year, Mark Rypien was pushed out of bounds (more like a love pat) in the final preseason game. Two days later, the team announced that he had suffered a season-ending injury and was being placed on IR.
Palmer probably has too much talent and bloodline to risk being put on waivers as a prelude to the practice squad. So, the medical staff needs to come up with something to put him on IR after training camp. Palmer has a good shot to be at least 3rd string in 2008 since Brunell and/or Collins should be done by then.
Palmer, however, must show that he is worth keeping over Casey Bramlet, who is apparently having a good season in Europe.
