View Full Version : How would you beat the Jets?

I'll admit that i'm kinda obsessed with this game. I have a very close friend who is a life long Jets fan and we've been waiting for this week for a long time.

So what do the Skins need to do to win? This would be my plan.

Starting on Defense:

1. Gotta contain Martin
He's rested and ready to go. People may say that he's starting to lose a step, but this is week one- he'll be fresh.

2. Get pressure on Vinny
Along with all those yards that Vinny has is the ego of a dwindling skills QB. Vinny still thinks that he can do some things on the football field that he can't. Under pressure he may challenge Champ/Smoot... if he has time he will find our weak links.

3. Stop Santana Moss
This is maybe my biggest key. I look at this game and it's hard to not think that we got it. Moss is an ex-factor. Who covers him on D? I think that Smoot should get Conway, Bauman/Champ get Chrebet and Champ get Moss. I don't know who the starting 3 is for the Jets, but Moss is a playmaker and he's just itching to breakout... plus he's a legit Top 3 player special teams threat. If that doesn't scare us, nothing will.

4. Limit penalties

On Offense:

1. Run the ball
"It's just crazy enough to work" Will we throw it to Coles 50 times or will we throw it elsewhere or will we run? I don't know, but that means neither to the Jets. I'd suprise them with 30 carries split over trung and betts.

2. Low penalties

3. Good blocking or Misdirection
The front 7 of the Jets are going to be hungry. If our line has some issues, they WILL eat us up. Abraham is a beast and we can't let them gain momentum with sacks. Maybe our draw plays and screens can take advantage of the aggressiveness. I trust SS has things in store.

And the thud of me jumping off my balcony will coinside with a Jets return touchdown on special teams.

Any ideas?

Stopping Martin is the first key to the game and force Vinny to beat us. He's capable so we'll have to apply alot of pressure with the front four. Disguise our blitzes when we do them.

We have to win the field position game. If we can get short fields to play with, that'll help Ramsey out alot. Forced the Jets into having to go long distances to score. I agree with you, I establish the running game which will open up the playaction. I'd also hit them with a reverse or two. I don't think that'll be our gameplan on offense. I hope SS doesn't come out too excited and start pitchin it all over the place. We'll need a balance attack. I think running the ball initially will throw the Jets off. I'd also do what SS did against Baltimore. I'd call some quick hitting plays early that would let them know that we'll be expecting the blitz so be prepared to get burned if you use it.

Our special teams have to play really well. As I mentioned early, Chad has to give us good field position. None of that letting the ball bounce crap. Also, we must not give up the big play on ST.

That's a pretty good plan. The most important thing you need to do is put pressure on Vinny, if Vinny has time he can still pick apart your D even at his age but if you get him running for his life you guys should be in great shape.

You also mentioned Moss, more important than his role at WR is you need to contain his PRs. The guy is a threat to break one for a TD EVERY time he goes back to receive a punt.

And finally I guess the most important key is to have a positive turnover ratio. The Jets do not lose when we are +1.

hey NY... you have pretty good takes... i'd like to hear what you think our weaknesses are... like what you would try to exploit...

what players are you expecting to surprise? How's Robertson looking?

PVC pipe is a soft plastic and is much too ineffective when used on the knees, as opposed to drop forged steel, my personal favorite. However, players have always had a hard time fitting any usuable lenght of this stuff under their pads, so we may have to go to a plan B.

That being said:

Stop Curtis Martin. 60 yards or less

Single coverage on the Jets wideouts. Bailey needs to shut down Moss and show he is worth the 18 million he wants. Smoot needs to do the same to Chrebet or Conway, whoever starts. That will allow Bowen to crowd the line and help on running plays or play over Becht in the seam.

Pressure on Vinny. I do not think the Jets adequately addressed the loss of Thomas on the O line. Get pressure up the middle.

On offense, no penalties, no turnovers and Ramsey needs to complete 60% of his passes. In football, more than any other sport, turnovers are the great equalizer. We can't make it easy on them and give them extra possessions.

Also, make them go the length of the field. ST's will be key.

*Shut down their only apparent strength - The running game. *For our offense - good field position so that means good special teams play.
LAST but not LEASE - Now that it's for real - Catch the ball!!!!

Regardless, we have to go into this game thinking that we are going against Jerry Rice in his prime. We can't underestimate, but we can always overestimate.

I'd like to attack their secondary early with the passing game. Since they play the cover 2 defense we need to attack the middle of defense between the LB's & safties. Pressure on vinnie of course. Bump&run coverage on the receivers make vinnie hold on to the ball longer than he has to.

In a nutshell, establish a consistent running attack that will enable play action passes every so often and stop the run on defense. Accomplishing this should win the all-important time of possession battle. Limiting turnovers in our own end is extremely important as well. No freebies for the Jets.

Santana Moss doesn't scare me at all. Not even a little. He's do for some minor ankle sprain that will shelf him for 3 games anyway. Martin/Jordan/whoever is the key. I don't think Vinny can beat us without a strong running game. Trotter and Armstead need to put on a sure tackling display.

Throw the ball deep. The biggest weakness on the Jets Defense is the speed of the DBs. Attack them over the top with Coles and open it up for Trung to face nickel and dime defenses to run the ball. You have to be patient on offense though. This is Patricks first prime time game of his career he needs to be calm and not get caught up in the hype. Martin is the key to stopping the Jets but also blitz the crap out of them. I would run blitz every other play. Vinny isn't mobile so send a LB after him often. Our DBs should be able to handle there WRs in man on man coverage without much safety help. So I would move the safeties up and let them help in the run. The only thing that scares me is the Jets are excellent at screens. Our D needs to smell the screens and anticipate the play. Hopefully Bruce Smith will get a good amount of playing time because he is one of the best at that. As awful as our DTs are. The Jets offensive line isn't much better up the middle so I'd let Trotter play like he did with the Eagles and play a downhill style.

What I expect the Jets to do is to try to control the clock w/ Curtis attacking the perceived weak DL of the 'Skins. If we can get Curtis going it will open things up for Vinny to get the ball to the 3 WRs. I see the Jets taking some shots deep w/ Moss but mostly going w/ the short-intermediate routes to Chrebet & Conway plus I expect to see lamont Jordan get some touches on screens and short passes.

On D we need to make Ramsey get happy feet. We don;t have to have 4 sacks but need to be in his face and I expect Abraham will greet him at least once.

I think this game will be decided on STs and that's where we have the advantage. Morton is a great KR but he had great schemes to work w/ here and I'm not sure your blocking is as good as ours. Morton is also not a very good PR while we have the best in the game in Santana Moss. Santana will break at least 1 for a big gainer.

By the way, Roberston has looked fine so far. He has taken abuse in the media for not making the spectacular play but he's doing what I expected him to do. he is occupying blockers(he's been DT'd most of the time he's been on the field) and freeing up Abe and co. I think he will live up to his hype.

#1 key for the "O" - give ramsey time and make holes for trung. so that means good O line play

#1 key for the "D" - stop curtis martin. he is the type of back that kills the skins. keep him under at least 80 total yards.

#1 key for the ''SP Teams" - block for morton. he needs to give us some good field position all day. he didnt get much blocking during the pre-season.

overall, play smart and dont go backwards....

In no particluar order:

Shut down Martin - keep him under pressure all night - no breathing room.

Conway, Chrebet and Moss deserve some attention - but if there is pressure on Vinny those guys won't have much to catch.

For the Redskins Patrick and Company:

Mr. Coles and Mr. Gardner are the key for the passing game - long or short.
Mr. Canidate - setup the passing game - but be effective and hold onto the ball.
The ST - Mr. Morton and Mr. Hall - now is the time to prove the FO and Danny Boy right!
(This could be one of three games were the ST makes the difference)

This sounds like the right formula to beat the JETS. BUT can the skins execute? I cannot believe the Hype Vinny is getting, yes, he has played in the NFL before, I think it's just ridiculous. Do you think the players on both sides are bitter about the what transpired during the off season? I know it only makes sense to go where the money is. Would you leave one job, for something that would pay better? of Course, Thats a no brainer.... I think Snyder did and awesome job getting the players. BUT I also believe the skins will be in Cap purgatory for some time.....That might be a serious downfall. Everyone predicts the Jets being last in the division again. I can't wait till kick off.....

Jets 24
Skins 17

First and foremost, welcome to hR SoCal. Always glad ot have other team fans join in our disucssion.

These guys are pros, football is not the same as it was, free agency keeps people moving. I dont think there is bitterness between members of the teams, fans yes, players NO, they know its a business. BUT, they woudl each liek to show off one another.

Cap hell? Alot will depend on decision coming in 04 and 05.

Sign a few more Jets players before kickoff for good measure. We can cut them later.

My Econ prof at the U was Italian. He had me do a couple of "jobs" for him to, you know, pay the bills.
