The Steve Spurrier show is currently on Sports Talk 980am, and here are some of the interesting things the Ball Coach had to say:
On Danny W getting cut:
Spurrier basically said that at the time of the decision, he was against it. HOWEVER, "looking back, it seems like a wise decision because we now have a roster spot for McCullough and a D lineman instead. Plus, we don't think Danny will be picked up by another team..so if Patrick or Rob get hurt, he will be the first person we resign." [paraphrase]
On Watson getting cut:
Like the Weurffel cut, he was against it at the time, HOWEVER Spurrier reminded the hosts that this is an organizational decision. He remininced that during the draft, with their 2nd round pick, Spurrier wanted them to draft Jacobs. He said there were other people in the war room (ie...Snyder and Vinny...etc) who wanted someone else. He went on to say that Snyder gave SSpurrier's opinion the nod, and Spurrier got his man. "You win some, and you lose some" was what he basically said.
On Jacquez Green saying the Old Ball Coach was stupid for having Patrick do too many 7-step drops last year:
[MAJOR PARAPHRASING HERE!] "I'm not sure what Jacquez knows about critiquing football. In fact, there aren't that many people in the country who even KNOW who Jackiquez is (bumbles his name pronouncition) . In fact, he doesn't even play anymore, since the Bucs recently cut him". OUCH!
I'll post more if I get a chance....

Glad to hear that he seemingly has simmered down about Snyder stepping in in the Wuerffel decision.
As far as Greens comments, I think that is the second time in a few days that he was approached about some type of comment from Green. The other had to deal with his stubborness. Sounds like Spurrier has pretty much had enough of that talk from him, and I don't blame him. Accomplish something first before you act as though you are an expert.

Some more...
When asked about utilizing the run this year...and if he learned a lesson from last year's mistakes:
Spurrier basically said he will continue to throw the ball (no surprise there). He said that he prefers to put up 34 points a game through a pass attack rather than 24 via a running attack. HOWEVER, he said that if the passing game doesn't work, then they will pound it on the ground more. He also reminded the caller that the Skins had (2) 100 yard rushers in a single game for the first time in 17 years.
On the Jets matchup this Thursday:
Spurrier said he thought the NFL obviously planned a Jets/Skins kickoff game as soon as he signed the 4 Jets. He said it doesn't matter because his team has been "coached up".
On playing the Jets w/out Pennington and the FAlcons w/out Vick:
He said that you hate to see people get hurt in preseason. THat why he made sure Ramsey played as little as possible. Also, he said that it is more satisfying to beat a teams "best players", but their injury status is out of him hands. When questioned by a NYC writer about facing Vinny he said: "I'm more concerned about making sure Ramsey is at his best during the game, than I am about who is starting the game for the other team" [parphrase]
Finally, The Old Ball Coach ended his show by saying that he wants to give the fans something to "Root, Yell, and scream about", and that he plans to get "FED EX FIELD ROCKING"!
Gotta love the Old Ball Coach!

The comments on the cuts are nice to hear especially when i just got finished listening to Tony and Wilbon talk about how bad a thing it was for Snyder to have sided with Vinny on the Woeful issue. They were saying how it might cause a riff with SS since he was being paid 5mil a year to put together a team catered to his liking.I hope he genuinely accepts that he and Dan will disagree from time to time and that he's ok with that.I hope we have atleast a 9-7 season to quite all the paranoria around our team and squash even more talk of sweeping changes looming.

Thank you dj for the reports.
And you're right, you gotta love the Ol' Ball Coach. Little more than 48 hours till kickoff!!

I think we have to win 10 games and make the playoffs before any media lets up on the Skins, And probably that won't be enough.
SS simmered down about Synder because he knows what happens when you "cross the boss"

Good work DJ, gotta love this kinda of info sharing. I'm thinking the old sharped-tongue Spurrier is slowly working himself back.

Good comments, sounds like he has accepted the arrangement he agreed to when he was signs coach, in regards to organizational decision making.
Good comments to do about fans and giving us soemthign to yell for, because as I have kept the feeeling to myslef so I dont get choked by fans here and Spurrierites, I just have no felt that Spurrier really connected with the fan base or the organization. I have felt that we were just a lab to experiement his offense in the NFL. This is the first time I feel like, may be he does consider himself a Redskin now.

I've actually heard Spurrier make alot of comments in reference to the fans, so I disagree with you Penn. If my memory serves me correctly, he actually credited the fans for one of the games last year.

I know up in Carlisle he was not very fan friendly. I am looking forward to some of the lashing he will give other teams and coaches in the papers. It will be very interesting

a little of that bravado to go into the opener.
seems like he's over the whole power struggle thing... really isn't a big deal... #3 RB and #3 QB... whatever...

I didnt know Spurrier argued In FAVOR of Watson... I thought it was the other way around. That is how it was worded anyway.
So who wanted Watson gone?
