I was interested by his mention of Marcus Washington "playing with his hand down" and how it's a lot different than rushing from a standing LB spot. Very interesting. Also liked his mention of Taylor playing center field and "gettin balls for us "

my sentiments to the tee...talk is cheap, shut someone out or stop letting them convert 3rd and long on a regular basis and I will get fired up then.

marcus was admittedly hurting last year, but he was a non factor in pass rush

Man, if you hear the whole interview, what GW has to say about Sean Taylor is amazing. He says he is thinner and leaner, to the point that he has elite WR/CB speed, but still off the chart power for a FS.

I really enjoy listening to Greg Williams speak, he speaks with such confidence that I think he could get you excited about a pile of dog turds.
That being said, I agree as well. I never would have thought we would have fallen to 31st on D as we did last year and now that I know it is possible, all talk is cheap. Sure I'm excited to hear that people are working hard, healthy, looking fast and picking up the defense but all that needs to translate on the field on game day.

Exactly. Every year at this time it's the same for every team across the league. I just want the defense to tackle better. Everything else will build from there.

Good stuff and the defense should be better. Really can't regress too much lol. Williams is an excellent public speaker and he knows his defense needs to come through. Last year was an embarrasment.

I still cannot buy the Coverage sack as a strategy, so I was bothered by the idea that he says we wants the D backs to make the QB hold the ball longer.
I don't want the QB holding the ball longer, I want him throwing it before he can make all his reads, and that starts with pressure.

I'm in the category of show me on the field. But GW does have that dynamic when he's interviewed. I'm sure we don't want to hear him saying Rocky is sucking it big time and defense isn't looking good at all.

Confidence inspires confidence.
I understand y'all's reservation. "Show me" is a healthy response to what we've gone through (the highs and lows) but --
I like the smack. I like the swagger. That's important. Some of the best defenses in the league set themselves apart that way.
I for one am jazzed that Smoot is jawing again and the D line is hungry. Of course we have to prove it on the field. Of course.
But lack of confidence and we've lost already.

I'm already fired up on this defense after last year, albeit, not in a positive way. Talk is cheap.

it is always said that defense is all about attitude and "wanting" it more than the other guy.. at least we arent beaten before we step out onto the field
that used to happen to teams coming into RFK.. it needs to happen again. i bet gibbs remembers that clearly

great to hear jc and cooley are making big strides, and that we have some depth in the secondary. more and more it seems our fate is tied to our thin and veteran lines holding out. if they do, and we don't make the playoffs...:smash:

I agree 100%. I'm also in that category, but it's not like he called a press conference to say such things... the reporters asked questions, what was he supposed to answer?

I think the two losses to the Giants were stunning morale-killers. Seemingly, Tiki had our number, and the Giants were smart enough to exploit our weakness until we were adding safeties to the box. Absent those two losses, the season would have been a respectable mediocrity.
Anyway, I think what most people don't know is that our D-L and LB's were seriously banged up, i.e. they had groin pulls, leg problems, shoulder problems and on and on. To make matters worse, Springs and Prioleau were out for several weeks. We found out very quickley that all the stuff that gelled in 2005 wasn't geling in 2006. There was no Walt Harris to step in for Springs. There was no Ryan Clark or Stoutmire.
In short, the whole kit and kaboodle fell in rather quickly once in became obvious that our main guys were playing with one shoulder, one leg or hamstrings.
I think the addition of Landry was key. He and Taylor will knock some receivers into the bleachers. They will tackle better, and a lot of balls will be dropped when the wideouts hear the footsteps. There's going to be some big fumbles too. Funny how you get the sacks when the wideouts are fearful of going over the middle and meander out of their routes.
Here's the bright side: we have the best safety pair in the league. Look at all the great teams: almost without exception you will note that they have a pair of excellent safeties: Jake Scott and Dick Anderson in Miami; Pettibon and Rosey Taylor in Chicago, 1964; Cliff Harris and Charlie Waters in Dallas, and on and on. Look at our championship season of 1991: Edwards and Copeland.
Anyway, our schedule is horrific, and our team is unstable at least five positions (left guard, wide receiver, OLB, DE, DT) but I think things will turn around when those two hitters take care of business. Remember back in 1981, when the Skins had lost about six straight games, and the Bears came to town? Dave Butz picked up a fumble and ran 50 some yards for a near touchdown, and it turned the whole team around. That's what we need this year. A big time play that wins a close game, and in fact, turns the whole season around.

Im on board with all that believe that this needs to displayed on the field
WORDs are cheap - and after what we witness last year with this defense - words are meaningless too.
SHOW ME some positives (in a game) they lets get excited.

Taylor is borderline top-5 and Landry has not played one snap in the NFL in his life. It might be a little premature to call the the best anything yet.

When you look at the boys and their great safety tandem you cant get past the DL they had during those years.
Harvey Martin 4 Pro-bowls 1970 all decade team 1977 AP defense player of year.
Bob Lilly 11 Pro-bowls 1960 and 1970 all decade team 75th all anniversary team HOF
Randy White 9 Pro-Bowls 1980 all decade team 1978 co-superbowl MVP HOF
Ed Jones 3 Pro-bowls
I think you are sorta over looking the quality of the other players when you try to compare the Safety position. The reason Harris and Waters were so great was because of the Execellent DL and Lbers they had in front of them. No doubt Taylor and Landry for a great combo, but they cant run around covering everyone and attacking the line either. They will need help. It all starts up front.

DING DING DING.
I hate the fact that a Cowboy fan can see this so clearly when so many Skins fans cannot.
It starts up front. You can have the best 4 DBs in the history of the NFL, they will look bad if the front 4 cannot generate pressure or stop the run consistently.

another big example: the cowboys tanked the end of the season a few times under Parcells so take it for what its worth. The Boys had a very good defense going before ellis went down and then we had the rough part at the end of the year and gave up 33 points and about 425 yrs a game. We stunk it up all over the place and NO would use the fake Reggie Bush reverse to force Demarcus Ware to cover him in the flat as a decoy and took away our best pass rusher, then the secondary as bad as they were couldnt cover all day and got blasted deep.
I am not saying our DBs are world beaters but the pts per game went way up after our pass rush was taken away.

I thought it was interesting that a reporter asked directly why the Dline position hadn't been addressed and his response was that all they needed to do was get healthy and that Carter has looked phenomenal.
I am excited about the praise he had for Rocky......

right on. "get healthy" is a disguising phrase when talking about guys in their twilights, which are exactly who he was mentioning, since teh guy in his prime is doing great, and the guy still developing is healthy. i'll be real with you; all i take comfort in is the fact that things can change so quickly in the nfl. we have question marks all over the place. even if jc turns into what we're hoping for, conservatively, he'll still have some wrinkles this season and maybe next, by which point, most of both lines will be needing replacement, and moss may have lost a step. it's a good thing we actually have our picks in teh coming drafts; we'll not only need them, but need them to pay off.

Yea...I stop laughing on 3rd & 5 when he is giving a 10 yard cushion. If I see that as regularly this year as I did when he was last on the team, I will jam my thumb into my eye.
