just received an e mail from a friend of mine who sent me an article from www.snopes.com about the latest identity theft scam going on
it involves jury duty.. your phone rings and the party identifies themselves as being with a local court and says you are being targeted for criminal charges because you have failed to show up for jury duty.
the charges will be dropped if you provide the "court" with proper identification to prove that the summons was never received or sent in error..
SS number, birthday and other identifying info is collected. sometimes even brazenly credit card numbers...
amazing what is out there

Thanks for the heads up, shally. As a general rule, nobody should ever, EVER give personal information out and definitely not over the phone. Tell them to send the sheriff.

IMO, if someone is gullible enough to give a complete stranger their SSN, they deserve what they get.

in general that is true.. but this kind of insidious thing is often used against the elderly who are fearfull of being "arrested". sometimes even they will go out to the house with a fake badge

Luckily, my grandfather can't hear/doesn't listen to whoever is calling. Every phone conversation pretty much goes...
"Hello?
[I say something]
"Who is this?"
[I say who it is]
"Who?"
[ I say again, only louder and slower]
"Oh, hello!" (still doesn't know who is calling)
"Yeah, I'm doing pretty good"
[I say something]
"Yeah, I've been having [insert medical condition] with my [insert body part]. But I'm still here."
...
a few minutes of banter where I say things and he responds with a conversation that he wants to have/thinks we're having
...
"Ok, well I gotta go pee"
[We both say goodbye]
I freaking dare a scammer to try to get his SSN, lmao. The fools.
