RENO, Nev. - A golfer’s attempt to get out of the rough and back on the fairway started a grass fire that burned about 20 acres near a golf course, officials said.

The golfer had knocked his ball into dry grass beyond the course on Monday afternoon, officials said. When he tried to play back to the fairway, his club struck something that created a spark.

I hit a rock with my 5 wood about 2yrs ago that set off some serious sparks. Maybe it's just me, but I could see that happening if the brush was as dry as they say.

i was gonna say, i could see it happening easily if you hit something in the rough. makes you wonder about the quality of the course, though, if they can't water the course enough to prevent that.

Yeah, I was in the rough on the other side of the cart path, but my lie was good and I decided to "go for it" as I had a good view of the green about 220yds away. Just as I hit the ball several sparks shot up from the ground. I remember it vividly because I was really pissed off at scratching up the bottom of my club like that. If I had known that my ball was sitting on top of some rocks I would have moved it for sure.

doesn't club-to-ball contact also create a spark? I remember watching a tournament once, while it was getting dark, and remember seeing a spark when the player made contact with the ball.

not club to ball, but i've seen a driver create sparks when it scrapes the ground just before impact several times

No Kenny, I don't have it.

I'm with Kenny, I can see this happening as well. I've seen sparks from people swinging their clubs on the tee box. If he hit something like a rock in the woods, it's very possible.

That's not fair. Anytime something sweet from Nike comes out you expect me to have it in my bag the next time you see me, but I'm supposed to believe that you don't have that in your bag?
