Just coming over the wire. Central London car bomb attack thwarted. Mercedes smashed into several trash bins and came to a stop around 2AM London time in the Picadilly area. As the driver exited the car and fled on foot, bouncers from nearby crowded pub rushed over to the car and saw nails in the back seat. Emergency services were called. Sky News reporting that the bomb was a big one.

Not being funny - but why would a terrorist/suicide bomber crash a car at 2am on a school night...?

And just after Gordon Brown takes over at No.10...?

Call me cynical...

This kind of thing just makes me sick to my stomach....

Any word if they caught the driver? London is littered with cameras so I'm hopeful they've got his mug on film.

sounds more like it was fumbled instead of thwarted.

Either way, old boy ain't getting his 70 virgins. He might might even get a single, solitary skanky ho after this close call, not that he deserves one. Unless she had an atomic case of syphillis that would rot the guys brain out like what happened to Al Capone. Yeah, that's what should happen. Let it be so!

This is what you get for a close call.

VERY weird attack here if it was Salafists. Poor technical quality of the devices(and unusual propellants). Not suicide attacks. Very sloppy execution. Bizarre placement of the devices. Peter Bergen said he thinks this could be just about anyone, not just Al Queda or Al Queda inspired groups, maybe not even Muslim extremists.

They have now found a second car rigged to blow nearby. Obviously a lot more to this than we first thought.

That was my first thought as well. Not the optimal time to maximize terror and destruction.

At any rate I am glad it was stopped.

They apparently have video of the "bomber" as he fled the Mercedes. The cell phone bomb failed to detonate. News reports said there were 2,000 people inside of the nearby nightclub. That's a big target!

This all happens on the new PM's second day on the job. Bummer.

Good point. I see other implications of set up. emmiting fumes is bound to get even a toddler or animal's attention. Its only natural to report smoke and fould odors IMMEDIATELY to the authories, far earlier than even being close to explosive stages. Propellants added with nails, needs a boost, not a leak. Very fishy in placement, timing, and rapid response to release of information on nomenclature of the device(S).

Fix? Copycat group? Al Qaeda screw up job? take your pick.

Blair would be a "perfect" personto be a Bush tool and European Czar. If I am wrong, so be it, but the current adminstration has a reluctance to come clean on a lot stuff for gaining support, even at the hands others being in harms way. Was there a nod to make something happen to indirectly influence support for Blair immediately, since Brown JUST TOOK over? We have NO control on UK's decision - See "WMD". Not saying Bush did it, but if Blair wanted support from the very group that could do in his bid of being the Terrorist Czar in Europe, maybe he' getting help in a indirect, clandistine way from a copycat group.

I don't think Blair as a anti-terror Czar is the answer for Europe. OPS and INTERPOL has a lot more chock full of stuff in there and as quick as he departed, the formulas could have changed. He can't be direct hands on in ALL of the other countries INTEL. Maybe that copycat group knows that and want HIM in so they can actually make a fool of him and make Europe actually feel more vunerable than secure.
