The documentary the Redskins have been working on all off-season is about to air! I've seen the whole thing, and it's fantastic. I wrote and recorded about 50 percent of the music on this thing, so I'm really excited to see it aired. I also provided some of the footage, believe it or not. That collection of games finally came in handy on an official level. Oh, and any broadcast footage you see from SB 17 comes from Bandwagon's original beta tape that he gave me to convert to DVD awhile back. It's too bad, but the 'Skins really don't have much, if any, broadcast footage at their facility.
Anyway, the local (D.C./Virginia area) broadcast times are:
Monday, July 23 on Comcast Sports Net, 8:30 p.m.
Saturday, July 28, Channel 9, 7 p.m.
Try to watch the Comcast one, because that's going to be a longer version. The one on Channel 9 is going to be slightly edited.
If you're not able to see it, don't worry. I've been working on putting together the DVD version of this, which will have about 40 minutes of extended and bonus interviews. Putting that together right now, in fact.
Anyway, this should definitely get people fired up for the coming season. Just a heads up...
Also, you should be seeing those 30-second "Great Moments" vignettes airing in the next couple weeks or so, including the one with Danny White crying.

Don't worry - as I said above, it's going to be made into a full DVD with about 40 minutes of extra interview footage. It'll probably be on sale from the Redskins Web site or in Redskins stores by the end of the summer.
If I put this thing online, that would be the end for me working with the Redskins. And rightly so. :-)

I heard Sam Huff tell a story that the only TD he ever scored (as a Redskin on a blocked field goal attempt by the Giants) didn't make a highlight clip because the team camera man had unexpected technical difficulties (rain maybe) and missed filming the only Redskin play in his long tenure with the team.
Sam Huff never made the highlight reel despite one of his most-memorable plays of his career!

Wow, that stinks. For what it's worth, there's a lot of Sam in this. I was out at the Park one day when Sam came in and watched his segments. He was sitting in the booth crying, especially when it was talking about Lombardi dying. Some pretty touching stuff about he and Sonny being so close, too.

Is the TD he scored in the highlight? Can you please confirm this story with Sam if you see him?
I was too young to see him play but I grew up listening to him telecast the games w/Sonny J, I loved to hear that duo each gameday.

If you have SportsPak you get Comcast Sportsnet channel on 629. I plan on tivo-ing this and watching it until my hard drive gets groove worn in it. Thanks for all the hard work and dedication WWD.
I assume this has the eponymous and iconic bleachers bouncing, dallas destroying, "We Want Dallas!" playoff game, yes?

Verizon is my sworn enemy, but I might have to crawl back to them for that deal. I'm going home tonight to wrangle the Comcast DVR into submission.
Thanks for all the info everyone, as usual, and if I fail in my efforts you can put me down for one of the DVDs. Please let us know when it's done!

Can't wait for the DVD.
I have asked this before but why do you think whoever owns the rights to old games doesn't make them avaialable on a game by game or season basis via a DVD? Seems like it would be a money maker?

I am far from an expert on this stuff but I have experienced something similar in magazine publishing. Basically, the broadcast content of the game is "owned" by more than one party. At a guess, the list might include the network, the NFL, the NFLPA "likenesses" uses, the advertisers who paid for the broadcast might have a stake, etc - in essence, a lot of people have to agree that it is a good idea and how to split the proceeds. In some cases (old companies) the party may not exist and its intellectual property is an unknown or has been acquired by one or more other companies in acquisitions and mergers, etc.
I was shocked when the NFL-N started showing a few old games in their complete original format. It took a whole room of lawyers to pull that off I am sure.

Thanks, man, but I can't take any credit for the editing. I didn't edit this show at all, but I provided a lot of footage for it and a good bit of the music was written and performed by me. We're talking about the original broadcast of the game, not the NFL Films footage. They have everything from NFL Films, just no actual broadcast footage. They mixed in some of that broadcast footage with the NFL Films stuff, the former of which originally came from Bandwagon's old beta tape that he used to tape the game back when it actually aired.

WWD - That rocked. Stuck out here in So. Cal. the team can seem very remote but tonights show brought backsome of my favorite moments as a skins fan. It also clued me in to some guys I hadn't seen much of - if nothing else, it has made me want to educate myself on Cliff Battles. It was also very cool hearing about Huff and Co. hangin' 72 on the Giants!
Seeing Larry Brown, Charlie Taylor, Bobby Mitchell and the crew from those late 60's/early 70's teams get their schwerv on brought back some wonderful memories. As did watching Riggo do his thing in the playoffs. I have vivid memories of those games but seeing some of those plays again was very powerful. How many Cowboys does it take to tackle John Riggins? All of them - and its still not enough!
Riggins: What's up?!?
Dallass: Um, nothing, Sir!
Riggins: That's right. Now get in that kitchen and make me a sandwich!
Dallass: Yes, Sir! Right away, Sir!
Aww, yeahhhhh. ;) (Apologies to Jon-Jon Mackey the Weather MAN)

I loved it!! It brought back many great memories. As the hour passed I found myself growing with pride. Its simply great to be a witness to such a rich history.
I was telling my wife that I hoped the players were watching the program. Not just to familiarize themselves with our rich tradition but something more than that. I hope our players take advantage of this very special time in their careers. Maybe, by watching the show, they would collectively realize that they are being coached by some of the greatest coaches in league history, not to mention a player that once played for Gibbs (Byner). I hope they realize that they are a part of something greater then themselves and don't waste a great opportunity.
I was also very proud because my wife is somewhat of a new fan. She is from South Africa (where they play Rugby) and she has become a growing fan of the Redskins (thanks to me, of course). It was cool for her to see all the players, coaches, and great moments from the past. [Let me reiterate THE PAST-- meaning I think players ought to start kicking some @$$ again]. Over the past few years, I've done my best to represent Redskins Nation but seeing the program is more telling. Thanks to everyone who was involved in created this documentary. Although, I would have liked to see a little more about Arthur Monk (since he is my personal favorite player from the 80's) but I'll take what can get. ;)

Awesome! But how were you able to watch this out in California? Just curious...
Yeah, I had the fun task of putting together the bonus footage for the DVD, which is a bunch of extended and bonus interviews. There's a lot of stuff there about Art Monk for those who wanted more, including a testimonial about him by Theismann that is just absolutely incredible.
Some stuff I wasn't able to use featured things like Sonny talking about how Joey T. rubbed everyone the wrong way early on. I get the feeling Sonny still doesn't like him, though I could be wrong. He was telling a story about how Theismann was complaining one day about Jim Plunkett getting the Heismann trophy over him, and Theismann said Plunkett got the sympathy vote because both his parents were blind. Sonny said he was really disgusted by that and just got up and left the room.
Anyway, there's also an Easter Egg on the DVD that fans will get a kick out of, if they can find it. :-)

I have Sportspak on DirecTV so channel 629 Comcast Sports Net is my friend. I always watch the Redskins Postgame Live right after a game. The program I miss though is Redskins Magazine. I used to watch that when I lived in Virginia and it always made me laugh to see Doc Walker and Tony McGee cutting up with each other.
I always like this background info from the players. One of these days someone will have to get Jugenson, Kilmer, and Riggo in a bar for the official Redskins drink-off. It might kill even Akh to keep up with those guys. :)

That was nice, That old stuff always gives me goose bumps, ecspecialy that 82 Season. It is great to rememebr what I was doing for some of those games.
It was not a secret that the old guys did not like Theismann when they were all on the team. The types of personalities didn't mix well I guess :). JT strikes many people that way. Once he became the starting QB though I don't think you could have asked for more from your QB. He had/has a motor mouth and one giant ego but in those Joe Gibbs years he backed it all up. Was tough and rarely made mistakes. Can't wait for the DVD at the store.

I have heard that Sonny and Billy, who would otherwise have been pretty strong rivals, found common ground. It wasn't so important which of them started, as long as it wasn't Joe. LOL

I think much of that was due to as I mentioned, just plain personality types and what generation they were from. Billy, Sonny, Talbert, Potios (spelling), McDole, Over the Hill Gang types hanging out in thier club house in Carlisle tossing back a few probably didn't take well to the brash kid who wrote a QB book or something before he even played it in the NFL. Joe styled is hair too :) no way he was going to fit in or have those guys like him at the time.

WWD - It was absolutely fantastic. I set my DVR to record it, but said hell with it and watched it on the first broadcast.
I though the portion on Lombardi was very touching and gave alot of insight into what he could have accomplished here. I didnt realize he had such an impact on Sonny.
Great stuff. You are my hero, man. You really are. I am watching it again tonight so that I "catch" your music, which I really didnt notice the first time around (not that it wasnt great, I just wasnt paying attention.)

And I think they were jealous of Joe's great punting ability. LOL
