View Full Version : "I don't really hate fat people, it's just my immune system"

Interesting read I found on why skinny people seem to hate fat people. Kinda popped out at me because some really skinny dude I worked with randomly lashed out at this big fat guy even though he's probably the chillest person I've ever met. Anyway, here it is:

http://news.independent.co.uk/health/article2814756.ece

From the taunting of the chubby child in the playground to cruel jibes at fat people in work and social settings, few could doubt there is widespread prejudice against the overweight. However, according to research reported in Evolution and Human Behavior some people suffer abuse because being too fat is mistaken by the brain for a sign of disease.

Researchers say the immune system can be triggered into action at the sight of obesity because it doesn't like the look of what it sees, and associates it with infection.

Just as it orchestrates attacks on viruses and bacteria and triggers nausea at the hint of bad food, so it sends out signals of disgust in some people at the sight of an obese body that is designed to encourage avoidance and survival.

It's way longer than 3 paragraphs btw.

Human behavior/evolutionary traits > political correctness.

Stuff like this makes my blood boil.

If they think "fat" people are the only ones teased, then they should think again. I lived my entire childhood being called every name in the book because I was so tall and skinny. But people think, "Oh quit your crying, you're thin afterall you should feel lucky!" Like that makes it ok to tease...

You're absolutely right!! We need a support group for tall beautiful women who are at or around their ideal weight.

:D

Exactly my point.

..although...since you said "beautiful" I won't use the rolling pin on you

That's funny.

Most skinny people won't say anything to my big, fat ass because they know I would put them through a wall if they did. :rpunch: :kidding:

Yeah, you know I am joking, but it really comes down to people can be teased and/or feel insecure for just about anything... It would be interesting (at least in my mind) to understand what differences there are in our culture that cause this??

But unfortunately, I only have so many brain cells and I need to get through the day at work.... So maybe someone smarter than I can opine on the matter.

smoak mentioned the key word. Insecure. That's why people make fun of other. They are insecure of themselves.

People will find any weakness in other people to make themselves feel better.
