I got to mission 2 last night and didn't noticed that there was another opening. I was able to stay alive but after the second wave I only had 2 bars left and managed to get to wave 16. After that it I realised it was 5am lol.

Just make sure it make a long winding path with vulcans, and upgrade. you'll find the last (5th) upgrade really improves the cannons.

I've never upgraded the vulcans, just used them to act as walls. Then I put in a few rocket launchers and fully upgrade them. Works great through level 5, I haven't tried level 6 yet but 100 waves looks to be impossible.

Level 6 is impossible. But the best is Plasma upgraded all the way. The Vulcan upgraded is one of the cheaper upgrades, and on the last upgrade, shoots an incredible distance.
