"Sources said the contract, hammered out in four days of marathon face-to-face negotiations in the Bay Area, has a maximum value of at least $61 million.

The deal also includes about $31-$32 million in guarantees and an attractive payout schedule that will enable Russell to earn substantially more in the first three seasons of the deal than the $20.95 million that Houston Texans defensive end Mario Williams, the top overall selection in the 2006 draft, will bank in his first three years."

That's just insane. I pity the team that drafts first next year. Time for slotting, or football will become the new baseball.

no wonder it took forever to sign him. Those are some sick demands. Does anybody think he'll have some PT this year?

Russell is helluva talent but I will state that he got the better end of this deal. Please players union put more rigid guidlelines on rookie contracts. Stop this epidemic now. Contracts like this put a bad taste in mouth for rookies like this ala Eli Manning, Kellen Winslow, Alex Smith, etc. Prove it on the nfl field and then get paid.

That contract is out of control - for someone who hasn't even proven himself on the field .............. Man it's going to be tough to have the #1 pick next year - Even a top 3 pick.

It's been said here a million times before, but something has to be done about these rookie contracts. They need to be set in stone, regardless of the player or position. You're drafted first, you get X amount of dollars. The end. Or hell, give everyone drafted in the first round the same amount of money. I don't care, just something has to change.. Rookies do not deserve to be the highest paid players in the NFL, plain and simple.

Apparently he has been training with Jared Lorenzen during his contract dispute. He has reportedly shown up weighing 278lbs according to Fox sports. They said he raised questions when he weighed in around 265 at the combine, wonder what he is raising now.

And a cancer is born. He has to learn a playbook no one has the time to teach him, get the benefit of others experience at position that players preparing for games can no longer give him. Basically a lost year, and at a price that will make every vet seeing his uselessness disgruntled. Like I said, a cancer is born.

I doubt Russell ever becomes effective in the NFL. Shame on the Raiders for not getting a deal done before he was even drafted.
