The man loves football. The man loves Redskins football. It simply oozes out of his pores. I'm sitting back watching my oldest son practice football with his Kettering-Largo-Mitchellville 75lb teammates when my Blackberry rings. Usually when I'm watching my boy practice, I'll ignore my phone when it rings. I'm so wrapped up into what he is (or isn't) doing on the field that I try to keep the distractions to a minimum. This ring was different though. It commanded "Don't Ignore Me!!" I slide the phone out of it's holster and the caller ID prominently displayed "Doc Walker". Well, I gotta take this call. "Yo Kenny, what's up? Let's do this man." With that begins the 3rd year of the hailRedskins/Doc Walker collaboration......

K-For starters, give me your overall assessment of the game against the Dolphins.

DW-I thought that overall, Sunday was far more positive then negative. I'd say 80-20 positive to negative. You had Chris Samuels return from 3 weeks of no contact, along with Pete Kendell who has only been in camp for 2 weeks. You lose Jansen in the 1st Qt, but Stephon Heyer the former Terrapin steps up. Miami comes out and takes away your primary go to guy in Chris Cooley, yet the passing game excels because of the efforts of Randle El. I'll take Santana Moss 9 times out of 10. He had a couple misses and there were some overthrows, but we were still in the attack mode with the passing game. This offense with Jason Campbell has the ability to score in one play. Now Brunell was successful against Dallas. He had some big throws, but this kid can do it on any down. When your offensive line has those things going against it, playing against the Dolphins which is a top 5 defense in 2006 with the addition of Joey Porter, it was recipe for disaster. Yet, when they needed it most during that scoring drive in the 4th Qt, they were actually the best. When you throw in close to 200yds rushing, that's checkmate.

K-You mentioned Jansen going down. What do you think will be the long term effects of that injury? Has he played is last down as a Redskin? A photographer from the Post took a picture right as the injury was occurring. It was nasty.

DW-Well they never look pretty when they are dislocated. Randy Thomas had a similar injury, and he bounced back. Jansen's resilience will bring him back. What he has to be cautious of, as do all veterans, is how well does Todd Wade play in his absence and are the cap numbers to his disadvantage. Then it becomes a business decision. I don't think that you can ever have enough competent people on your offensive line, so that is the unknown. You gotta find out if Wade can pick up where he left off from the New Orleans game from a year ago, which I thought was the best game of the season for Washington because they were able to go out and literally gut a team that was in the final four with their ground attack. This teams' strength is it's running game with Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts.

K-You mentioned Wade and seeing if he can pick up where he left off. Do you agree with the decision to start him over the rookie Heyer?

DW-Oh absolutely. Absolutely. I predicted it during the post game show. You have to use Heyer, who has proven that he can play both tackle positions for depth. Wade is not a left tackle. He couldn't play left guard, he sure as heck isn't going to be able to play left tackle. Stephon showed you that he can play left tackle and right tackle, so he becomes the ultimate swing guy. Plus, he's a rookie and Todd Wade has started a lot of games in this league. Add that he played well last year, so you put him in and hope that he picks up where he left off. Heyer just becomes so versatile and valuable for you.

K-You mention Jason Campbell and the threat of the deep passing game. One of those attempts led to an INT involving Brandon Lloyd seemingly giving up on his route. He followed that up with a lackluster effort in going after the Dolphin defender after the INT occurred. How much longer do the Redskins put up with Lloyd and his antics?

DW-Well, when you put $10mil in the hands of an athlete, it's frustrating, especially for the fans in this town. It's frustrating when you've seen the likes of Charley Taylor, Roy Jefferson, James Arthur Monk, Gary Clark, Ricky Sanders. They've seen Santana Moss. They've seen guys that just go out and play hard. I think that this town will accept you no matter what your talent level is if you play hard. I'm not ready to throw the towel in on Brandon Lloyd because I think he has enough pride to recover. He has to recover on Monday night. Now, he is on a short leash because they brought Caldwell in, who has started a lot of games in this league. Brandon Lloyd is exactly what this team needs because he is a deep[pause] well allegedly he is a deep ball threat specialist. So, he blew an opportunity to make a play or to avoid an INT. That ball was on the forty. That was in a potential scoring position. I'll tell you what he is going through. He is going through the fact that he is not starting. He's down on himself, which happens with all athletes. He's got to fight through it, and if he does I think that he can serve himself well in this town. If not, then you know, he'll be cast aside. You saw the treatment that Archuleta got last year and he got $10mil as well. They've shown that they will put you on the bench no matter what you make if it come to a point where they have given up on you.

K-What were your impressions of the return of Clinton Portis, and touch on the 1-2 punch that he brings along with Ladell Betts.

DW-I thought Clinton was spectacular. I did not agree with his approach to preseason, but at the same time I never saw him practice. What I mean by that is they only allow the media to watch warm ups. Well, that's a waste of my time. I want to see practice. My doubts were would he be Clinton, and he was Clinton. He will only get better. Nobody has the perfect game, but he has enough talent where he almost got 100yds on 17 carries against the Dolphins. Betts. He didn't have a heck of a lot of work in the preseason either. I thought that Caveman Sellers was out of this world as a lead blocker, and they gave him some carries. I just think that it's potentially a devastating running assault once they get in a groove. Listen, no one in the NFL with these abbreviated training camps is going to come out like they used to 10yrs ago. Forget about it. All of has to get over the fact that it's a brand new approach. It's going to be sloppy Septembers. It's been that way the last 5-6yrs. What you have to hope is that you are 3-1 or 2-2 at the very least. Then, around October when everyone gets their legs underneath them, these numbers will come up. You only saw three teams excel: Indianapolis, New England and Pittsburgh. By that, I mean they put numbers up and they played defense. Dallas put numbers up, but they gave up 35pts. That's unacceptable. You've got to be able to stop people. I will take Washington's defensive effort which was outstanding, but you are not going to win 10 games if you can't score 21pts.

K-Could you envision Saunders ever using Portis and Betts simultaneously in the backfield to add another dynamic to the offense?

DW-I hope not. I hope not. You have to have Sellers and one back. Ladell is not a fullback and Clinton isn't a fullback. Their strength is letting Sellers run that isolation play where I don't there is a LB in the league that can stand up to him. Everyone can be had in the pros, but I think he wins 8 out of 10 battles at5 the point of attack, and that is really, really important. On the collegiate level, West Virginia's fullback is a guy that I consider to be a caveman as well. He is that same kind of guy. Sellers is 280lbs with speed. He's a freak of nature. He's an alien. You just don't find people like that. I'm so happy that they have expanded his role and I hope is role expands even more.

K-It wouldn't be the same around here in Redskinland if there wasn't some type of odd situation or circumstance going on, and true to form we do have that this week. What do you make of this entire Shawn Springs situation/fiasco? You have the coach saying one thing and the player saying something totally different. What's the deal?

DW-Well, I think both of them are probably at fault in this. They are both at fault because they didn't communicate to one another. I think that the organization owed him an explanation before game time, and he's got to be honest with them as well. They said that he had treatment or had his leg wrapped on Monday. He said he was fine. Well, you don't get your leg wrapped unless you are concerned about something. They said that two weeks earlier he had a little problem with his Achilles and he said he was fine. I saw him run 2hrs before the game, and he looked fine. I know that he trains and that he is in great shape, so that wasn't an issue. There is a thought that they felt like they weren't afraid on the WRs from Miami. I don't know, I'm waiting on an explanation. I agree that players shouldn't make decisions on their health and that coaches have to manage players. Their problem is being consistent. I'm convinced that the consensus is that some guys can do whatever they want to do while other guys are held to a higher standard. Whenever that happens, you get these kind of problems. I think that both parties have to put winning above all else. If you do that, then everybody has to compromise. Hopefully, they will get this behind them.

K-With as many 3 WR sets that are implored these days, how do you justify not starting him, yet you trust him in your nickle packages? What I'm saying is, if he was good enough to be your nickle back, shouldn't he have been good enough to start health wise?

DW-All I can say is you look at your schedule and look at your opponents, and you go "where is your immediate threat?" Well, to me it's week three. That's just me thinking. You paid Smoot a lot of money. You paid Rogers a lot of money. He was the 9th player taken in the draft. If those guys can't cover people, then you are in a world of trouble, Springs or no Springs. If you want to take a look at it and find out, Miami was the week to do it. The first time Fred Smoot was in this town, he was cover corner. Now, age plays tricks on all athletes. If they told him to be in that deep of a zone, then he was doing his job. That's not the same Fred Smoot that I saw the first time around, so the jury is out. Rogers is still learning how to play in the NFL. He's a very confident corner versus the run. He's a zone corner who I think has a lot of potential because he is close. In my opinion, he has difficulty because he never locates the ball. Once he turns and starts finding the ball, then he will start to have a lot of INTs or a lot of knockdowns. I don't think that you can access the corner unless you know the coverage he's being asked to play. That's what my pursuit is, in gaining a better understanding of what they are being told to do. My eyes don't lie to me however. It seemed like there were way too many people open. Let's also access Trent Green. Trent Green was on. He's a Pro Bowler. He made a lot of quick throws which is difficult to get pressure on. I thought that Carter, who had a sack and nearly had two more really picked up where he left of last year. Montgomery was solid. We had a chance to see Golston. They had a pretty good rotation at a position where everyone thought they would be week. There were times when Trent had way too much time, and if Donovan gets that much time you are going to be in a world of trouble. The LBs are incredibly improved. Rocky McIntosh has star qualities and Pro Bowl skills. Fletcher has been there, and Washington played on guts but he has got to get healthy. Wen he's healthy, he can be the best player on that unit. There is a lot of things going for them. Landry and the Tarantula were playing their coverages well. Sean is really lean and mean and seems like he is really focused on his cover skills. He's got all the talent in the world, it's just a matter of getting it done. You don't win every battle in this league, but I'll take the performance that they had because they controlled the scoreboard. They gave up the 4th and 1 which you don't like. I thought that was a gutsy call by Cam Cameron to go for it. When a guy gets open in this league, you don't know if it's a broken assignment or what's going on until they have given you the bottom line.

K-Week 1 provided us with our first extensive look at Pete Kendall. What are your thoughts on him and the trade that brought him here.

DW-Oh, he's a pro. I've seen him play since I was doing his games in the Big East at Boston College, Seattle and with the Jets. I've seen Pete play a lot and he's a baller. You can't come in a place, pickup a system in 2 weeks and play an entire game against Keith Traylor, who is about 900lbs, along with Zach Thomas and the rest of those guys and not be a baller. He's a pro. If you gave up a 4th or a 5th Rd. pick to get a Pete Kendall, then you stole him.

K-It's time for you to give us your thoughts on the next opponent, which is the Eagles this upcoming Monday night. What needs to happen to secure a win up in Philthadelphia?

DW-First of all, you have to recognize that Philadelphia gave away a game that they should have won on the road up in Green Bay. They were horrible on Special Teams. They had some great defensive line play, along with the play of their three new LBs. They lose Shepherd to injury. They still have the best FS in the NFC in Dawkins, and they have two ends that can get to the QB. They are the best team in the NFC East. They own the NFC East. In order to take it from them, you have to take it from them with Donovan starting. All those games that you win and he doesn't play don't count. They are going to be at their place. They are already one down because of the loss in a NFC Conference game, and it's going to be a dog fight. I think that the Miami game was a good game to get you accustomed to speed rushers. You got the chance to see one of the best in the AFC, but I like Washington's offensive line. If they can run the football, they can play with anyone in the league. They are not good enough to go up there making mistakes like dropping passes and turning the ball over. That's not a recipe for winning that ball game. They have to play the kind of football where they sustain drives keeping McNabb off the field, and they have to make big plays in their passing game. They have got to get Santana going, Randle El needs to pickup where he left off from week 1, and they have to get a contribution from Brandon Lloyd. They may lose Cooley again because they have excellent safeties. You can't double Cooley and Santana. For the first time, the threat of the passing game is legitimate. It's not just about one guy. They have a potential trio that will earn respect in this league. That will soften up coverages and that helps your running game. They have to prove that they can win on the road. If you are going to be a champion, then you have to be a beast on the road. On Monday night, I think it's easier because you are pumped up and you are playing a divisional game, and you are in South Philadelphia, home of the jail in the stadium.

Great Read. What I love about Doc is that he bleeds Burgundy and Gold, but still is completely objective in his football analysis.

Funny - His take on Lloyd won't sit well with too many around here. If it were up to the majority at this site BL would be riden out of DC on a rail. Glad to see Doc's take on the situation - Great job Kenny!

Doc Walker is, by far, the best Redskins (and NFL) anyalyst around. He finally got his own show (too bad I'm at work) and he deserved it. His knowledge is unquestioned and his opinions are completely non-biased which has to be hard considering his background. Notice I said opinions and not loyalty because that man bleeds burgandy and gold. It's an honor to have him partner with HR.

Great Read. What I love about Doc is that he bleeds Burgundy and Gold, but still is completely objective in his football analysis. That's why we wanted his services and that's how we see this site. We bleed burgundy and gold, but we don't wear burgundy and gold-colored glasses.

Yup good thread. Interesting take on BLloyd, I'll admit that I am one who wants him to get outta here, but like it or not, he's going to get a week or two more to show us what he's got.

Awesome read. Really enjoyed it. He breaks down this team so well and honest. It really is refreshing. Especially liked the Lloyd comments and getting Caldwell. The Philly game should be interesting. Thanks again Doc!

Doc is great.. I love listening to him on WTEM. I always look forward to his analysis every week. He's honest and a very nice change of pace from Larry "State Owned" Michaels. I've always respected Doc's angle on things. Of all the analysts out there Doc, Joey-T, & Sonny are my favorite three.

Glad you're back, Doc. Great stuff. Thanks Spence, we all look forward to these insights. I notice Doc has BL on a very short leash - he has to produce in Philly or go behind Caldwell. I really hope he produces - we need him, or Caldwell, to step up.
