Hey, pay attention!! Doc Walker has something to say!!

KS-Well Mr. Walker, why don't we start off with an overview of your thoughts on the win against the Eagles on Monday night.

DW- I thought that it was a quality win. Anytime you win on the road against a perennial division champion along with it being on Monday night, despite losing Pro-Bowl talent like Randy Thomas says a lot about the character and makeup of this team. Considering that defense and the talent along the Eagles defensive line, it was a great win.

KS- I'm glad that you touched specifically on the loss of Thomas. That's twice in 2 weeks we have lost major talent along that offensive line. Todd Wade seemed to play well and Fabini held his own. What are your thoughts on their play?

DW- I thought they played well. That's my whole point when I mentioned going up against the likes of Javon Kearse and you don't render a sack. Now, Kearse isn't 100%, but he is still better then most defensive ends in the league. I thought that the offensive line again proved that if you are going to be a really good football team, your offensive and defensive lines have to be the strongest units on your team. Now, this defensive line was much maligned and questioned in the off season, and there were times when Donovan had too much time. There were also times when he didn't have enough time. They had 3 sacks, and they nearly had a turnover and one potential INT. You still have to look at the overthrow to Santana which would have been ball game, along with the drop by Cooley and think what could have been. We aren't New England, we're not Indianapolis, but we are so far ahead of the game with the threat of the passing game that it was enough to get a win. That is a game that Washington loses 2yrs ago. It was not a perfect win, but it was a big time win.

KS- The rest of the country was able to get their first extensive look at Jason Campbell. What do you like or dislike in regards to how he is progressing to this point?

DW- I like everything about him because in his 9th game he is able to make mistakes, have another turnover, yet in the 4th Qt play his best football. I thought that McNabb played his best football in the 4th Qt as well, and he's a former MVP. He's obviously not 100%. As far as Jason goes, it was huge because it builds confidence. You have to keep in mind that was Jason's 9th start in this league. I think what he has done so far is pretty doggone good. There is still plenty of work to be done, don't get me wrong, but I like winning while you are improving. These early wins are big because it almost makes you better then you really are. Then eventually, you will become as good as you think you are. Right now I think that he is schedule, along with the rest of the team. The worst thing that could happen to them is to be .500 in September at this point. That's always been my goal is to be .500 in September because this month now serves as the new training camp for most veteran starters. On most teams, their starters haven't played a lot since last year.

KS- Last week we touched on Brandon Lloyd and his lack of playing time and production. Perception is that James Thrash has leapfrogged him on the depth chart. You mentioned needing to see something positive out of him against the Eagles. Has anything changed in your mind about him?

DW- Jason joins me every Tuesday on SportsTalk980, and he told me that they had a play in to get Brandon the ball down field, but the defense didn't allow them to do it. The match ups at that time wouldn't allow it to happen, so they lost that opportunity. I'm not giving up on Brandon Lloyd. I'm disappointed so far, but in one game he can turn everyone back into Brandon Lloyd fans if he could simply make some plays. I still believe that he's capable of doing that. Eventually, Caldwell will be up to speed and he will have lost his chance, but I think it's too early for that. This offense is still evolving and maturing.

KS- Another one of our young players that seemed to impress was Rocky McIntosh. Has this guy made that much progress in one off season, or does this speak more of it being a ridiculous decision by former LB coach Dale Lindsay not to play him more?

DW- There was clearly a disconnect between the staff including Dale Lindsay and Rocky McIntosh. I think both sides had to improve, but for the life of me I will never understand why he sat for 12 weeks. He simply couldn't have been that bad. That's old news however. The new news is that Lindsay is gone, and this kid had a super off season. He is a terrific player, and he is healthy. I just think it's better to move forward and concentrate on that then to move backwards.

KS- The defense hasn't blitzed as much as many fans, including myself, expected them to. Why is that in your opinion? Do they get after Eli on Sunday or play the same style they have so far?

DW- I think it really depends on how many points that they put up. This defense has played outstanding ball based on a low amount of points scored. If they had a cushion, I think that you would see more blitzing. You don't just blitz to blitz. I'd rather they be more conservative and not give up the big play then to just blitz for the sake of blitzing and you end up giving up a big score.

KS- The last time we caught the Giants when they were seemingly down like this, they manhandled us. Are you nervous about this game, or do you feel that it is one that we should handle with confidence?

DW- This team doesn't score enough points to beat anyone handily in the NFC East. I throw records out of the window when it comes to the East. The Giants to me are frightening because of the way that they beat Washington at home a year ago. They simply violated the Skins at home. Now, Tiki Barber is no longer there, but everyone else is. This is a statement game, a payback game. This is a game of redemption, and I expect this defense to brutalize the Giants just from a payback standpoint alone. That doesn't mean we are going to score a lot of points though. This defense has to generate turnovers. They are not going to win big until this defense can put 7pts on the board. Special teams has been giving them about 6pts a week, but the offense has to put 3 TDs on the board. They have to get over 30pts anyway they possibly can. They have to do it to really be effective.

KS- I know that you have a lot of contacts around the NFL. What is the vibe that you get from the Giants and Tom Coughlin? Has he lost the confidence of his players and respect in the locker room?

DW- I think that any team that is winless has a lot of chaos surrounding it. The star defensive end doesn't show up for camp. Amani Toomer is playing his butt off. Plaxico Burress is highly talented, you just don't know when he is going to show up. Shockey is highly talented but temperamental. They are struggling at RB. I for one think their QB has played well. Eli Manning isn't the reason why they haven't won a game. They have to get a running game, and their defense has stopped no one. The two offensive they have gone against had Brett Favre, and Tony Romo had a great night against them. They scored 35pts against Dallas. That says to me that they are coming into this game serious, because Dallas is at least equal to Washington defensively. Now remember, they are playing without Terrence Newman and they lost Ferguson in that game, but I have a lot of respect for their talent, and the Giants put up 35 against them at their place. Washington needs to get to old school burgundy and gold football where they don't lose at home.

KS- Touching a bit on the loss of Barber an the fact that Brandon Jacobs is out for them as well, do you expect them to become one dimensional and relying more on their passing game?

DW- They have to establish a running. They have to try. They are paying someone a pretty decent amount of money to run the ball. They have to see if they can get that going. Now, Washington has to stop it and make them one dimensional. Hopefully, you get Fred Smoot back on Sunday and your nickle package is fortified. If you have a team on the ropes that is one dimensional, then hopefully you can pick off some passes and really create havoc.

KS- Along the lines of the nickle packages, I know that you speak to Shawn Spring frequently. Has he given you the impression that entire situation with him not playing the week before is now squashed?

DW- Yeah, it's over. He talked to Gibbs, and Gibbs emphasized that he thought the hamstring was bothering him and that we wasn't 100%. Looking at how the corners played in week 1, I agree with Joe and the decision that he made. You have to protect him. I thought Carlos Rogers had a heck of a game against Philly. I thought that he located the ball better. He always plays the run well. Now granted, he wasn't going up against T.O., but he was still dealing with NFL WRs.

KS- The lack of turnovers is mind-numbing for Skins fans, and I'm sure it is worse for the players and coaches themselves. We seem to have a lot of balls hit our DBs in the hands, but we can't seem to hold on to them. I know that they work on this, but is it something isn't worked on here as much as in other team's practices?

DW- Well, believe me, they do work on it. They have had OTAs, training camp and regular drills, they just haven't made plays. Smoot missed a big one against the Dolphins. Landry's would have been a big catch, but he's capable of making it. It's just a matter of time. One thing about it, if you get around the ball often enough, eventually you will get it.

KS- Much has been made of our defensive line and their ability to get pressure on opposing QBs. I think Andre Carter has played exceptionally weel so far in that regard. Does this unit still need to rely mainly on exotic blitz packages to generate a pass rush in your opinion?

DW- Well, one thing you have to take into account is your opponent. The Eagles throw the ball as much or more then anyone else in the NFC. Tre' Thomas and John Runyan are two of the best tackles in all of football. Tre' outweighs Carter by 60lbs. Which means, you can't bullrush him. So Carter had to take the long way around him, and he also had to contain because when you play McNabb, you have to maintain contain. If you go hard inside and you are pinned in there, McNabb can pickup 20yds on the run. So while it looks like you are not effective, Carter is still maintaining his responsiblity to the defense. They had 3 sacks along with good pressure. They didn't have great pressure, but it was good enough to win.

KS- Okay, well it's time for you to give us your keys to victory this week against the Giants.

DW- Well, we have to get better in every facet of the game, that's the most important thing. The 12th Man was spectacular against Miami. The 12th Man has to come out and absolutely stifle this young QB with noise. They have to pump the team up. We have to make big plays. We have to get Santana in the end zone. If that happens, the Giants are in a world of trouble because you can't double Cooley and Santana. I thought that Portis and Betts ran really hard against a really good run defense. This week, they have a chance to get back closer to their numbers. They had almost 200yds during week 1 and almost 140 in week 2, but 40yds were by Campbell, whcih is an added dimension. He's not Mike Vick, but he's deceptively fast and he is competitive. If he can get out of that pocket and get a couple of big runs, that just breaks the back of a defense. Again, the goal is to score 30pts. I just think that Washington is better then New York, so I expect them to win the ball game. I'm looking for a big play on special teams. Coach Smith has done a really good job with his youngsters on teams. You are going to have one of those games where Cooley is going to dominate the passing game inside. I don't know if it's this week or not, but we know that Campbell loves going to him. Once the running game really gets going again like it did against Miami, all these things open up. It's going to be a difficult ball game because the Giants are flat out desperate, but I just think that the 12th Man along with Campbell and this defense should be enough to secure victory within the 3rd Qt.

Doc thinks we're good enough to secure this game by the 3rd QUARTER!??!?! Great interview, RSF... seemed like Doc was hemming and hawing about how good we are until this last statement. Wow, even I don't think we'll win handily like that?!?!?

I mean this seriously: That's as good an interview as you will read this week about pro football. You can read The Post, SI, ESPN and you will not read a more informative interview than that one. Kudos to Doc and my man Kenny for doing a great job for everyone at hR.

I agree. The questions asked for frankness while not dodging the issues. There were no softballs. The answers that Doc gives are direct and frank, not holding back. Great stuff! As always I look forward to this feature and thank you and Doc for expending the time and energy to do it.

I love the Doc interviews. They are well thought out and they don't lean one way (homerism) or the other (bash the Redskins). Most of these other people probably just see highlights or watched some of the game in passing and look at the stats, then write something of the top of their head based on that or take someone else's words and change them around a bit.

I truly believe that we are the better team, and if we don't play down to the Giants we should beat them easily.

Spectatular read as usual. I really enjoy these and love Doc's insight. And yes the 12th man needs to be large and in charge on Sunday to beat the Giants. With the way we've been containing the run I expect Eli to pass on alot on Sunday.

Reading this was so wild because I have been saying some of these things all week. Especially "a few years ago we would have lose this game under the same circumstances". I know there was a lot of fans still worried about the Eagles game with 5 minutes left. I know I was.....

Im always happy to read Doc's interviews.

Thanks Kenny!!!
