I guess the lack of any thread here is proof that the commercial "best team you've never heard of" is correct. They whooped England 3-0 this morning to advance to the semifinals.

It'll be tough to beat China in China. Unfortunately the games are too early for me.

I would love to see Soccer become more popular here in the States. I just don't see it happening though. Maybe the next generation will help it out. I've read that there are more youth playing soccer than playing LL baseball.

That's been the case for a while. It just doesn't translate well into a spectator sport that Americans will get in to. Hell, I love the game and I only watch when it's a game that really matters. I wish pro football would be more like Euro and South American soccer where they are always playing. Of course they also have a ridiculous amount of championships so I could do without that.

Beating the English women 3-0 is hardly a whooping.
The standard of women's footie in the US is on a different planet compared to that in the UK. England have done well to get this far...

Unfortunately i dont think beating the UK team 3-0 is very telling. They werent that good in my eyes. And i have been really disappointed in our women so far. They have not played like the #1 ranked team yet.
They beat nigieria by 1 and that was basically a toe poke shot that redirected off a Nigerian player. Comeon

How, outside of Argentina, is a 3-0 win not a whooping? England only gave up three goals in their prior three games.

Yeah..it was like that when I went to school over there in the late 80's/early 90's.
It's true that 16 games a year is hardly enough, but if you make them play 30/40 games a year you would need 90 man rosters.
And there's not really that many championships..if you are a fan of one team you only have 3 or 4. If you try following them all as a neutral fan, then they are a ton.

The US squad is full of professionals, the English isn't. The US has a professional League, England doesn't.
Outside of Smith and maybe one or two others, the English side are part-timers who have to hold jobs down just to finance their love of the game. The women's game over here, while getting better, is exceedingly thin in depth.
It may have been a World Cup quarter-final but the two sides are hardly competing on equal terms. You find me one journalist/expert who had England down to beat the US...
Once again, you can hardly describe a team of professionals beating part-timers 3-0 as a whooping.

Hey do me a favor. Can you let me know, since 3-0 is generally considered a whooping in soccer, tell me which teams I may or may not consider this to be so. It would be much appreciated so I don't make that mistake in the future. I really wouldn't want to offend your delicate sensibilities by describing a whooping as a whooping when it in fact was just a predictable butt kicking.

If it was a predictable butt-kicking, a 3-0 scoreline hardly constitutes a whooping, does it...?

We get it. Your gals suck and ours should have beaten them 10-0. Anything else would have been embarassing. Jesus H man, they got whooped, live with it. I'm sure you'll just tell me it's the women's team and no one in England cares anyways. Well almost no one but the adverb police.

When a team of professional players play a team of part-timers.

This is true. They are talking about trying to bring it back. And i think they should, if our women are going to stand any chance in the WC. Their international play right now is way below par for our womens team.
I stand by my previous comments that they have looked terrible this WC. They are not the greatest team i have never heard of.
England came into the 2nd round barely and the US got lucky they drew England to play as that team was by far the easiest team to beat in the 2nd round.
Perhaps the US team is trying to give the rest of the world thinking they have a chance to win the WC so they are taking it easy. But are now going to turn it on.

Fire the coach. He replaced the keeper who was on a record streak for no losses and this is what happens. That's embarassing.

that is just sad. tho i knew they wouldnt win. They have not been impressive this season. They have the talent to blow everyone away so it comes down to bad coaching.
Why would Scurry start over Solo? Are you serious? comeon now! Maybe the Brazilians paid off the coach to start a player who hasnt played a full game in 3 months!!! 3 months!!
Solo hasnt given up a goal in over 300 minutes!!! If she was injured then i can understand but i have not read anything that says she is/was.
SpicyMcHaggis
09-27-2007, 11:53 AM
LOL!! I just saw the second goal that Brazil scored...wow. They bench their starter (which is ridiculous enough) to put in a keeper that allows that goal?
And somehow the US coach tried to defend the move by saying it did not influence the outcome, only 10 seconds later he said that Brazil had scored 2 goals with only one shot. So you have an own goal, and then your keeper does what she does, and that somehow does not influence the game?

I think this qualifies as a whooping by Brazil but I will have to check and see how much each team practices and what each player makes before a final determination can be made.

I haven't been following this but is it single elimination? The reason I ask is because we are supposed to go to my daughter's soccer coach's house to watch this tomorrow night and I don't want to bother if this is the game we will be watching. Coach is a big time Cowgirls fan and with a crappy game like this, talk will turn to the NFL and I will probably be listening to a lot of gloating, as well as getting ribbed for my Skins.

She's is right. Brianna missed two easy saves Hope would have made. I honestly think the coach should be fired.

I have two opinions on her comments.
1. I agree she has the right to criticize the coach's decision. (Just like I backed Tiki's right to criticize Coughlin, which many of you bashed him for, BTW)
2. I don't think it was fair of her to rip her teamate. (The goalie who replaced her) Very unprofessional. I'm sure she was very livid about being benched, but she needed to keep her comments directed at her coach, not at a teamate. Could she have made those saves? Quite possibly, but you can't make those statements as factual. If you are going to rip the goalie for not making saves, then you may as well rip the offense for not scoring either.

These comments were quite harsh and would be front page material if this was the NFL, NBA or MLB.
