Molson Coors, SABMiller Plan to Combine U.S. Operations to Compete With Maker of Budweiser
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The nation's second and third-largest brewers, Miller and Coors, are planning to blend their U.S. operations to help them compete in a struggling U.S. industry and against its leader, Anheuser-Busch.
Interesting. #2 (Miller) and #3 (Coors/Molson) are combining to fight off #1 (Anheuser-Busch or BUD).
Article goes on to say that the explosion of the micro-brew industry has also increased competition, and this merger will help reduce over head and costs to compete better.
I wonder if they will continue to promote the competing brands of Coors Light and Miller Lite...or if they pick one and run with it?
I don't typically drink any of that swill (give me a micro anyday!) but this story interests me regardless...

seriously... all the miller lite purchased at my house.... i think we single handedly keep that company afloat.
Miller Lite is always the fall back and my *spensored* beer of choice. So long as they don't mess with the formulas, i'll be alright.

So, I went on their respective websites to see which beers they produce other than the obvious. Too many brews...so some NEED to go...
Coors brews Keystone and Miller brews Milwaukee's Best (Beast). No way those two can survive together. I say keep the Beast, kill the Keystone.
Coors brews Killians. (Not half bad, IMO, simply because its usually the only good choice of beers at places like Abblebees or Ruby Tuesdays) Keep Killians.
Miller brews 2 different malt liquors which is one too many if they are cutting costs; Mickey's (of widemouth fame) and Old English 800. I drank my fill of malt liquor in my fraternity days and not much competes with "Old E" or "8 Ball". Keep the Old E...kill the Mickeys.
As I mentioned; there is a good reason Lite and Coors Light can't knock out #1 Bud. They are marketing against themselves. Keep Miller Lite...Kill the Coors. (Heck, call it a different name if you want)
All the rest of the stuff, especially Miller High Life and Coors Extra Gold can GO. Same goes for Zima (Coors) and Icehouse (Miller).

I always played it with Steel Reserve. Terrible nights that I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy.
However I'm more than likely going to do it again. I'd also say keep the Mickey's because its kinda unique.
Where I work (Costco), we sell beer in bulk, obviously, but the worst selling of the American beers, and just in general, is Coors. They wish they could sell half of what they send us, heh. This really doesn't surprise me.
Miller, on the other hand, is #3 or #4, behind Corona and Bud Light, and perhaps Budweiser.

Miller also is contracted by Sam Adams.
Bud bought a share of Red Hook a while back and more recently bought 5% of our own Old Dominion Brewery. In both of those deals, I believe Bud has no say in the formulas and it's just about distribution all over the country.

As a Bud drinker for the past 40 years all I know it going to take a lot more than Miller and Coors getting together to pass AB. ..............

i agree.. plus, it is not just about taste... there is something in miller that tends to give me a headache.. if they do whatever they do that causes it in both of their product lines, that will be one less brand for me to drink
besides, none of that horse pee can replace bourbon anyway

I think this also has something to do with the increased cost of Hops and Barley.
BTW - It would be a tragic mistake of epic proportions to get rid of the Icehouse line.

Coors and Miller could always make their beer using adjuncts like rice and corn to cut down on costs. That's what Bud does. Of course, it is against the rules of beer making according to the Bavarian Purity Law but nobody outside of this country would drink this carbonated water anyway.

Im not sure how you guys drink that crap honestly. I use Miller High LIfe when I am Steaming Crabs, but other than Killians and Sam, I can't drink the stuff named on the thread.
Malt liquor? That stuff should be illegal.

just for interest, most of the hops used in this country for brewing are grown right around here where i live.. they have hop processing plants and the smell they emit is really distinctive. not bad, but definitely different from anything else

They aren't mutually exclusive. I did better in college than HS and was pretty much living the high life everyday in college.....You just have to keep focused on the goal.

I guess if I was forced to choose between Miller Lite, Coors Light and Bud Light, I'd take Miller Lite. Coors is too watered down...and Bud just doesn't taste right for me. But in the end, give me a nice hoppy microbrew anyday over that crap.
Shally - Yes, your area of the country produces some great hops. I home brewed some beer over a year ago using Cascade and Willamette hops from your area. Great stuff!
I didn't think anyone drank Miller High Life anymore. I never see it in the store so I just assumed it was defunct.
