I was just glancing at the stat pages over at NFL.Com and I was impressed with the Redskins' defensive rankings after 5 games. See below for some of the better rankings.

We really could not ask more of the defense right now. If we could get the other units on the same page, we would actually be a very good team. Unfortunately the offense only shows up when it feels like it (or leaves the game early to beat traffic every once in a while).

That's good stuff. Hopefully our O can come around so we don't waste a good D this year.

I believe we have the lowest or second lowest rushing attempts against us. That will change, lets hope our rankings don't follow suit.

Technically the Skins are 4th lowest; at 21.8 rushing attempts defensed per game. But yes, that is a factor. And as you would expect, the Skins are 6th in the league in most passing attempts defensed. Makes you wonder how the Redskins will react to a team who makes it a priority to rush the ball.
The Cards are mid-pack in (16th) in the NFL in rushing attempts per game at 26.7. (Ironically...Philly, a predominantly pass-oriented team, is 15th.) They will certainly rush more against the Skins. 1. Because passing agains the skins doesn't work (see Philly /Detroit) and 2. because the are starting their 3rd string QB.

cant ask the defense to do more.. when is the last time any defense held favre to a 10 point game ? and if not for 1 blown play, it would have been no td's for the packer offense.
i expect more of the same.

Play the Pats. Our defense may be playing well, but the Patriots are in another league.

Yup...and that was part of the reason I posted those stats. Many of us, myself included, were happy to have GW drawn and quartered if he didn't get the job done without a DE pass rusher. He has proved us wrong, for now....and he is to be commended. The defense has been pretty damn good over these early 5 games.

no matter what, the skins will regret not having a dominant pass rusher from the d line.. but, if wilson can continue to demonstrate he can get sacks on a regular basis, it might be enough
but, i think the odds favor taylor finishing first in int's this year.. he could have 6 or 7 by now and there is no reason to think he wont continue to get his chances every game.. what is amazing to me is his growing ability to do what deion used to do to qb's.. TAYLOR IS ACTUALLY BAITING QB'S TO THROW DEEP... qb's simply do not realize how much ground he can cover and taylor gets to the passes the same way deion used to. simply jaw dropping
eventually what will happen is that offenses will simply tend to abandon the deeper routes. this will force more and more passes into the middle areas and GW will continue to drop 7 and even 8 back in coverage. he did this a lot against favre, who was able to identify where the zone dropping lineman (evans) was and avoid it. but we are talking about favre, and not too many other qb's can do this.. maybe brady and a few others. we should continue to get turnovers that way. BUT, the key is to get some pressure onthe qb while dropping all those guys.. that is where the line is the issue.. if wilson and carter can get pressure fromthe edges and if griffin and montgomery can push up the pocket it will make life miserable for a lot of qb's... if if if..

LOL...don't get me wrong. I still want a dominant pass rusher in next year's draft; preferably with the first round pick. I'm just happy to see our makeshift D-line actually play some physical football on passing downs. Its a welcomed change...
Regarding Taylor...he is already leading the league (with 3 other players) for tops in INTs. Not bad for a guy who has played 1 less game than most of the league. Now, if he didn't drop those 3 INTs against Favre, it would be NO CONTEST. ha ha

Another defensive stat for you...but this one is fantasy football related.
Redskins' defense is #1 at shutting down fantasy QBs. On average over the last 6 weeks, fantasy QBs average 39% less fantasy points than the AVERAGE starting QB.
Poor Rattay...

i will say this much. i do not think that rattay can beat the skins...edgerrin james can, and the skins offense can beat themselves once again, but despite the quality of the cards receivers, it wont be rattay beating them
Those numbers are great and it sure would be nice to see what they'd be with better support from the offense. When a D is playing with a lead, you tend to see the turnover and sack numbers climb.

unfortunately, the climbing sack and turnover numbers you refer to seem to come from our own offense...:banghead:

yeah ... but what we REALLY need is for the defense to score more!

Check out this tidbit from nfl.com. Who ever thought you'd see this in print at some point this season.
"The Titans, Bears, Packers, Redskins and Jaguars among other teams that have forceful four-man fronts. They get after an offense like the front fours of days gone bye."
