I know that we touched on this recently, but what would be better for us? Looking at the grand scheme of things such as:

* Talent in upcoming college draft
* Team Chemistry
* Salary Cap
* Shut down corner vs. Drafting for other needs (i.e. Safety, DL, TE, CB---). ETC.

I would prefer to keep Champ, but neither scenario sounds like a bad one to me:p.

Would I rather have the best cornerback in football or two unknown college players who have never played a down in the NFL and who, according to the odds, are just as likely to fail as to succeed?

Hmm, let me think about that one...

I know we have drafted pretty well in the early rounds the last couple of years and built a solid core of youing players. I don't think that streak will hold up. Unless there is a sure-fire DT or DE in the draft (not almost sure-fire, but definitely) that we could get with the pick we got for Champ. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the two first rounders would be for one extra pick for each of the next two years?

That's correct.

I'd rather have Champ for the reasons Spence stated.

I'll take Champ, if he really wants to play here in the B+G. Until I see otherwise, I'll take the picks. Remember the last time we had 2 first round picks? It lead to 2 eventual leaders on both sides of the ball.

Thing is, we already have those leaders and we need to keep the core of this team together, and Lets hope we kick some butt this year so maybe Champ will change his tune

I'd rather have Champ but...

how many corners stay top flight for that long? Ty Law, Woodson?? I don't know how long Champ can keep up the pace. So if we have to lose Champ... geting a first round corner and a first round DE or DT is a close second.

Normally, I'd say Champ. But I don't think he wants to be here.

If we can use our 2 #1s (that is if we get two #1s for him) to move up and draft a stud DE or DT who can get pressure on the QB, I'd settle with Bauman replacing Champ. After all, if we can get pressure on the QBs, you don't need the shut down CB as much.

I say we resign Smoot since he'll be way cheaper, and use the early rounds in the draft to address our DL and perhaps Safety positions.

Champ, but it looks like the odds are stacked up against that happening.

We don't want a Takeo Spikes in Cincinnati situation here. If Champ wants to leave, I'd rather he did, while we get two picks for it.

You're comparing us to Cincy?!

It doesn't take 14 losses for a player to be frustrated with a team.

There is no way the Redskins will get 2 first rounders for Champ. It will probably be something like a first and a second or third.

I think that if we go 9-7 or 10-6 this year and are a wildcard team, Champ will be sticking around for a little while.

Redskinfan29, we would get 2 first rounders because that is how a franchise tag works. We either get 2 first rounders or nothing.

Very true. It just takes long term mediocrity, which we have plenty of. I don't think looking at Ty Law and Woodson are good examples because they suffered injuries that slowed them down. It's not like they lost talent or stopped performing. Yes, an injury would hurt CHamp's game but you can't let a player go because he might get injured. You couldn't field a team if that was the case.

Traditionally yes, but I think there are instances where teams have worked out sign and trade deals with Franchise players. Even if Champ is tagged, the team could tell him to negotiate a deal with any team he wants in exchange for draft picks to be negotiated by the teams, or the requirements set up front, i.e. if you want to sign champ, it will require a first and a 3rd this year and a second next year, etc.

well to take a early look at it, we could pick one of these fools :), easily marlon jackson, deangelo hall or chris gamble would be the best pick http://www.nflreport.com/position_CB.htm

I think Gamble, while a good player, is overrated. He's not even as good a DB as Doss, who has been disappointing by all accounts in Indy so far.

If we did use the Franchise Player tag on him at the end of the season I don't think a team will make him an offer. So the two more realistic scenarios are:

1. Champ signs a contract equal to the average of the top 5 CB's in the league for ONE YEAR, that put us in a huge cap pickle next year. He plays the season and then he is free to leave(I dont believe we can use the tag two years in a row).

or

2. Champ holds out for most if not all of the next season then he leaves(again, not sure about the rules but I dont think we can "tag" someone two years in a row)

My hope is at the end of the season, the two sides work this out with either a long term contract or a sign and trade agreement for proven starter/starters, DL is tops of list right now.

Either way avoiding the use of the "Franchise Player" tag is in the best intrest for Champ and the 'Skins

Robert's right about the franchise tag. You don't have to make it two firsts. Buffalo used it on Peerless Price, but only demanded one first-rounder. Persoanlly, I think we could get two from a really CB- needy team, like the Lions.

I agree JDS. We could easily get two first round picks for Champ. That wouldn't be a problem.

I just can't wait to his reasoning on accepting a contract offer from another team that was comparable to the one the skins offered. [of course I mean after we get the two first round draft picks.]

two in the top 5? in a heart beat
one in the top 5 the other in the top 10? also in a heartbeat
both in the top 10? depends on the draft class
> top 10 picks ... no

GEEEEEEZ GUYS - we ran this through the mill two weeks ago!!!!

Lets focus on THIS SEASON and cross that "BRIDGE" when we get to it.

Let Champ have a outstanding year, make "ALL-PRO", and then see who makes the frist move once the season is over - that's IF they don't quietly attempt to resign him during the season.

i would rather keep champ. all those 1st rd. picks would have a big impact on our salary cap. I think they would cause us to lose more than Champ would in the end and champ is a proven commodity

Make the playoffs.........Champ stays.........

Miss the playoffs...........we'll see (ya)

No matter what, I don't want to see them give him much more money than was already offered.
