I was watching ESPN and Mort just reported that the Pro Bowl will be played a week before the Superbowl in 2009. This is something the commish wanted to test.
Also, as far as the draft goes the first round is being reduced to 10 mins per team and the 2nd round 7 minutes.

i'm not sure about the draft, because the front offices need to have time to adjust to the players being taken on the board and to call in trades.

Wouldn't this automatically eliminate any players from the two Super Bowl teams?

Guaranteed. No coach or player is going to risk injury the week before. As far as the draft I think it's a great idea. Most teams (except Vikings generally know what they're going to do, and 15 minutes only allows them five minutes more to stall and try and push trades that no one is going to accept anyway. I'm glad to see the time cut down. That's 2.5 fewer hours just for round one.

I also heard a rumor they were moving the initial part of round 1 of the draft the Friday night before. Interesting nonetheless. Yes and moving the pro bowl 1 week before the super bowl will effectively exclude super bowl participants. For some reason doubt they'd be too concerned.

I'm pretty sure that's already been confirmed to be happening. Which I think goes awesome with cutting down the time to pick. With months of preparation and scouting, that five minutes gone really shouldn't make much difference.
I don't know what to think about moving the Pro Bowl prior to the Super Bowl. I'm sure it means players on the Super Bowl teams wouldn't be playing, but you're also probably losing a lot of star power.

definitely. the draft time limit is good news though. the draft is WAY too long.

nm, according to PFT
ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that the NFL will reduce round one of the draft from 15 minutes per team to ten minutes, but that the move will not result in a shift (unfortunate typoe narrowly averted) of round one to Friday night.

If the Pats (or Colts) make the Super Bowl, and their players can't go to the Pro Bowl, what's the use of playing the Pro Bowl (assuming their is any to begin with, which I doubt)?

probably both good ideas...if memory serves me most people that play in the SB just opt out of the Pro bowl anyway. Wonder if that means some playoff team players will opt out too. I gotta say this commish is really all for trying things out and not just allowing the past dictate the future, I actually kinda like his proactive approach.
The pro-bowl gets dismal ratings and is an aftertought in many respects anyway, so this would at least fill the void waiting for the Super Bowl.
It's about time they reduced the amount of time for first round picks. Everyone and their mother has 17 versions of a 6 round mock by early March and if a front office will be caught unprepared then they deserve to pull a Minnehaha.

gooddell is a very innovative thinker. i applaud his ideas and desire to clean up the league, i just think that he has his head too far up his *CBS* on some of these things. like moving the super bowl overseas? trying to make fan noise irrelevant?

Goodell is an idiot and has proven so far to be unethical as well. He will be bad for the league of he stays for very long.
The Pro Bowl is viewed by the players as a reward for excellence over a long season. They get a chance to recover from dings and bruises and have fun in Hawaii. Moving it to the week before the Super Bowl not only guarantees that not only will the players from the SB teams not pay, but most players from a playoff team nursing a minor ding or ouchie will bow out (this is pretty much all of them).
As to the first round, let me ask this, is the draft to satisfy ESPN's need to give its guys a potty break or to give teams the best chance at the best player in their draft slot? It is very difficult to arrange the kid of trades needed to move high first round pick due tot he tens of millions of dollars at stake. This is bad for the teams and bad for the league and good for ESPN and casual viewers. Sad.
Do not get started on Goodell and ShredGate and the Belicheaters. Goodell is a sham.

sure would think so... also, those players from the playoffs who got nicked and had minor injuries not yet healed
overall a bad idea, i think

I think the best idea possible for the Pro-Bowl would just be to eliminate it all together. Just name the All-Pro team, and that's that. If the players wanna all hang out with each other in Hawaii, then fine, give them a prize one week vacation, but honestly, the Pro-Bowl is really useless. It's the worst all-star game IMO.

totally agree. it has been a long time since i have watched any live part of the pro bowl.. i might look at a featured clip (like taylor taking out a punter)
but otherwise it is worse that exhibition games because none of the players are trying to make a squad and nobody wants to hurt someone or be hurt..(except maybe mr taylor..lol)

Plus, football is the only sport where half the players only play defense, which is contrary to the concept of an all star game. It's supposed to be as spectacular as possible, and the defensive players do nothing but get in the way of that.

I don't like the pro bowl idea.
I like the pro bowl and find it entertaining. Its not the best football game you'll see that year but it beats the alternative which is no football at all and the start of a looooong offseason

Yes, which teams would usually get 6-8 players per team on the squads. Maybe this is the idea. More losing teams would have some player recognition. And given the choice of PB or SB the players would automatically and unanimously select SB.

I love the idea of playing the Pro Bowl the week before the Super Bowl. How many times have we seen over 20 players from the SB teams littered all through the Pro Bowl rosters? How many times have we seen deserving guys who had excellent years not get a chance to go to the Pro Bowl cause their team stunk it up all season long?
I don't really care to see a rematch of the Super Bowl with a few other guys from other teams.... we already have acknowledged the NFC and AFC champs, let's acknowledge others that had a great season too.
I would love to see a bunch of guys from teams that didn't make the Super Bowl or the playoffs to get some love. In the end, I think this is great for fans and for the Super Bowl site (the rumor is that the Pro Bowl will be at the Super Bowl site). It'll be a week long party celebrating the NFL.

So if your beloved pats or colts players don't make the pro-bowl you will be even more influenced not to watch it?
To be honest, whenever something doesn't involve the pats, its a good thing.
