First of all as a football fan I was mesmerized by the performance I saw today.
Second, there was one thing I saw in this game that turned me into an official Tom Brady fan. Up 45 to ZIP in the last minutes of the fourth quarter and once again in the red zone, one of the Patriots linemen jumped offside and instead of shrugging it off, Brady got livid and through a fit. Even after the opponent has been anhilated, Brady still was demanding nothing but excellence. Thats awesome.
And it made me think that I'm tired of nice and sweet. I'm tired of clinging to a 3 point lead and being sure to meet at the 50 for team prayers. I'm tired of good guy coaches and unpassionate quarterbacks that trot and whistle happy tunes off the field after another 3 and out.
Killer instinct - damn I can't remember that being associated with the Redskins ..well ever. We are too nice to beat our opponents senseless. We are too nice to be too agressive.

The team's mentality starts with the coach. In NE, Belichick is a no-nonsense hardass who's never satisfied and his players reflect it. In Pittsburgh with Cowher, the Steelers always played physically because that's how he made them play. Here, Gibbs is apologetic and reserved and that's how the guys play.

We lost it back in the late 80's and early 90's. Not sure where to look for it.

Look at the brightside, these guys have to live with a 52-7 defeat.
Their manhood has been shattered. It's up to the fans to remind them of this all week. hint...hint!!!

As much as it pains me to say it, I agree. I haven't seen the post game news conference. I'm not sure I have the nerve. I'm 99.9% certain of what I'm going to hear. Gibbs didn't blow up or say anything like "we suck. we lack effort. And if we don't make some serious improvements we're not going to be very good." did he?
Edit: Put me on the Cowher bandwagon...

Not in our coach, that's for sure. If I see another 1 yard shoot route, I'll scream. Aikman commented on it too. Are we that scared to run anything over five yards except on third and long? Today gameplan showed we were scared of the Patriots. It wasn't just that we were worried or trying to be conservative. The playcalling just looked scared. Did anyone notice Welker's last TD was a one yard shoot route? The irony killed me.
How can we expect our players to show fire when our coach neuters our offense?

reflective of the coaches personality.. the pats will do whatever is needed to bury their opponents. when they get up, they keep pouring it on
we need more of that arrogance from our coaches

george allen was the last coach with a true killer instinct.. gibbs has tremendous will to win, but not to crush out an opponent

Great thread. Seriously... Its about time we played a team with a fanbase who actually act like men who appriciate "no mercy" football, and dont cry like a bunch of little girls after a loss.
Hats off to you guys! Glad to see educated fans still exsist.

For the same reason you're a fan, I hate his guts.
Him and his team are brazen, arrogant, classless punks. And they'll get theirs...

Ideally, in the HC. Not happening here though...oh, and while we are at it...
An offense - Where can we get one?

It starts with the coach. The HEAD COACH.
I'm just about on the "Gibbs has officially lost it" train.
I thought his "we're the biggest underdog in the history of sports" statement was ridiculous well before the game, and yet that sums up his approach. Play everything down, take everything nice and slow, don't get too fired up, don't get too excited.
Yes, I know he used to do similar things in his first go-round. I was there for all of that. But behind the scenes, it was often a different story, and there was a fire and a hunger that is absent today. Maybe it was just a different breed of players back then, too. But this new breed seems to take the things he says seriously, and they DO seem to play like a team that doesn't believe in itself or have any real confidence in itself, particularly on offense.
I'm not looking for cockiness or arrogance, just a little self-confidence. I'm tired of hearing from Gibbs that "every game we play will come down to the last play." Really, Joe? EVERY game? Wow, that really instills a lot of confidence. I'm tired of all the religious mumbo jumbo, all the "let's all say a prayer for so and so or this and that" crap. What happened to "God helps those who help themselves"? Do you think the Patriots were saying prayers before the game? No, they were devising and executing a gameplan that destroyed and humiliated us. Say a prayer for the soldiers in Iraq, not the freakin' overpaid, underperforming players and coaches of the second richest sports franchise in the world!!
All this pains me greatly, believe me. I jumped on my bed like a 5-year old when I heard Gibbs was coming back. But he needs to stop being the team grandfather and start kicking some ass again, and I've seen ZERO signs that that is going to happen.
Enough with the lateral field football. Enough with the altar boy football. This team needs a little of the devil's influence.

Bingo, no need to even add anything else because this is dead on!

Teams reflect their leadership. Belichek demands perfection, so does Brady. They are efficient, not emotional. Coughlin is angry, so is the Giants D. Anger is an emotion poorly suited to the O, and this is the Gints weak point. Gibbs is deadpan, seldom showing emotion. He is self-effacing and does not get into players faces. His passion shown is small, and his dog house is large.
The problem when playing efficient or emotionally driven teams is they are usually in the right position. Playing unemotionally for an undemanding coach is that you can get caught out of position. IMO this is one cause of our raft of injuries. The biggest cause, however, is injury prone players, either because of slight build (Smoot, ARE, Moss) or wear and tear (Washington, Jansen, Thomas, Kendall). Of course, playing when hurt risks aggravation (Rogers, Portis). Add it up only if you like being depressed.
