View Full Version : Mike Williams Released

An industry source tells us that the Oakland Raiders have parted ways with receiver Mike Williams.
Williams, the tenth overall pick of the Lions in the 2005 draft, had been a major disappointment during his time in the NFL. He was traded in the 2007 offseason to the Raiders, and some thought that the reunion with coach Lane Kiffin, who worked with Williams at USC, would turn his career around.
It didn't, and so Williams is done.
He'll be subjected to the waiver system. If he clears waivers, he'll be free to sign with any team.
Williams initially was headed to the draft in 2004, by virtue of the trial court ruling in the Maurice Clarett litigation. But because Williams hired an agent before the Clarett case was reversed, Williams was not permitted to return to USC. He entered the 2005 draft after sitting out a full year of football.
I think Mike Williams is a person the Redskins should bring in. Hes 6'5" which would give us that Red Zone/Down Field threat. He already has more catches (7), and yards (90), than Brandon Lloyd (2;14), and he was just cut..
Thoughts?

I really coveted Williams in the draft, but man was I wrong. I think McCardell or Caldwell could fill the possession role just as effectively if the Skins were ever to send more than 2 WRs on the field.

I would prefer placing a cardboard cutout of Yao Ming at the receiver position.

The cutout could run routes better than Williams, thats for sure.

yes...because that is what we need...more players that bad teams cut. That will make up the 45 point difference we saw on SUnday

As I mentioned when ol' Spurrier signed all the washed up UF guys. When looking for a diamond in the rough, if you corner the market on rough, you're bound to find a diamond eventually.

True, but you got to go through a lot of crap to find a diamond.

Perhaps, but with our high priced offensive coaches you know they could turn him around. He could come in and be a pro bowler before the end of the season.

It's purely a joke, but it's the only reason I'd think to sign him.

I was really upset that the Redskins passed on him in the draft. I guess I was wrong.

I was furious as well. I wanted him bad.
IIRC, Kiper had him #1 or 2 on his Big Board :lol1:

He was number one in Kiper's Sept board but dropped all the way to #8 in January's
8. Mike Williams (jr.), WR, USC (6-foot-5, 230 pounds) | previous rank: 4
Last game: Williams did not play in 2004.
Williams is only a junior but dominated the collegiate game for two full years before his bid to join the NFL draft as a sophomore was ended by the courts and he was declared ineligible by the NCAA. Williams will enter the 2005 draft, and the only reason he has fallen from the top spot on the Big Board is because he has not played at all this year. But if he can stay in shape and keep his weight at or below 230, Williams should ultimately be a top-15 pick.

as much as i wanted to draft him when he was actually in the draft, let's just leave this trash on the curb.

We got Carlos that year right? I was high on him too, but look how things turned out. Of course, playing the re-do game we could come up with better choices all night.

Just sign him, the thought of having a WR over 6'3 for the first time in 4 years is good enough for me.

He couldn't even last 1/2 a season with his college coach as his boss in the NFL. As tempting as it is, the guy clearly either doesn't have the talent or the want-to that would enable him to succeed.
He should consider bulking up a bit and being a pass-catching TE, but if he hasn't exhibited the toughness to stick on bad teams such as the Lions and Raiders as a WR, it is doubtful he is willing/able to do the dirty work necessary to make a successful switch to TE.
Very sad to see a guy so highly-touted fail so miserably in the pros. Of course, he has that big rookie signing bonus to live off of, so I don't feel too badly for him.

When you have a combined ZERO td's from the WR position after seven games, I wouldn't automatically rule anyone out. Bring him in for a workout, there is no harm in that.

he also never got an opportunity in Oakland or Detroit..
stick him in a offense that actually MOVES the ball and maybe he can do something..
not saying we move the ball, but who knows maybe he could help

I'd sign my 5'10 165 pasty white self over a guy who tries to trap a ball in the NFL, YOU HAVE MASSIVE HANDS FOR A REASON USE THEM.

Because you know how hard he will have to fight to stand out with our Wide out core. Good god, They have Porter and Curry, Thats not a bad tandem. At least we can look at Williams. Now, on the other hand, picking up Wideouts that we drop = going dumpster diving.

Subtracting the Pats game and we still have none. Our pride flew out the door when we signed Norv as head coach.
Its better than having James Trash as a deep threat that Campbell seems to heave at least one Deep pass a game to him.

Williams in, Caldwell out?
I'd do it. At least the person we're keeping on the bench would be 6'3" and someone many of us wanted to use a first-round pick on a few years back.

Though, if we wanted a tall player who has average ball catching skills and acute route running skills, we could just line ST up at WR.

Don't you get the feeling that ST would have been our best running back, wide receiver, punt returner, corner, or linebacker? If only we could clone him a few times. :smash:

Ummm, hell no. He is lazy and worthless. He couldn't even get on the field in an all pass offense. Couple more cheeseburgers and he could replace Wade though.

Yeah, I am on the "Recovering Draft Mike Williams Bandwagoneers" 12 step program myself. Having eaten my crow on this one, I still think he couldn't do less than Lloyd/Caldwell/Thrash combined (5 catches for 30 yards). Even if all we ever did was use him out of the slot, if he can't dominate nickle corners, the laws of physics have been put in abeyance.

:D I think this is a two man job. One of us shoots him in the "Honore deBalzac" with a paint ball gun and the other swabs his mouth while he howls in pain. It will be on the plane for Singapore within the hour. Now, who invents the time machine so they can contribute to the team in 2008?
