I've not heard otherwise, so I believe the Redskins are around $4.2 million under the salary cap this year. If it is not used, that opening just goes away. It is not added to next year. That had me wondering why it's still there and where it will be used. Because it will be used. e are not the Bengals, saving money! I remember the F.O. stating- they like to keep about $1million free for emergency signings. The "extra" $3.2, is it being saved for an in-season signing of Champ, to fix Samuels' or Arrington's contracts (releaving future problems) or extending someone else? What do y'all think?

Excellent point cam. I don't what the money will be used for. There really isn't a player out on the free market worth that kind of money. So I can see it going towards Arrington or Samuels...

Next years is totally different because you have contract bases going up, signing bnonuses kicking in, that figure changes all the time. That space that is there now, may be eaten up by bonuses and incentives

Maybe I'm msinformed, but it is cap space money now. Every bonus owed has been calculated. The signing bonuses you write of, who gts one mid season? The incentives, what does that mean? Suppose we did sign Champ and used all that $3-$4 million, where were these bonuses and incentives coming from then? How would they be fit under the cap? I don't think the Cap space is earmarked for either of those items.

I believe he's speaking in reference to what the cap situaton will be next season. Players may reach some of the incentives during this season which I believe affects next season's cap. Base salaries will also change next season. They'll go up which increases the cap. Damn, we need a capologist here.

Well, here it is as I understand it and as briefly as I can.
As far as "incentives or bonuses", if they are identified as easliy reachable (a player has in a previous season or will with little effort reached/reach the trigger point then that said bonus amount will count against THIS YEAR'S CAP. In other words, those monies have already been counted against the 2003 Cap. If it is not an easily reachable bonus trigger AND it is reached, that said bonus amount counts against NEXT YEAR'S CAP. They don't come immediately due as they are reached. They are due as a credit if "easily or in arrears if not.

So, based on that, we still have $3-4+ million in room this year to spend on contract extensions, new contracts or reducing next year's Cap by renegotiating...

I think that 4.2 million if not used will be a big help next season to absorb some of the raises and bonus that will hit becuase of this season. Now in the time being if a player should just happen to come along we could use then it is there now. I hope we do not just fill this space up for the sake of filling it up, that would be stupid. Not a whole lot we are going to do to iimprove this team anymore this year other than chemistry

As you have said maybe we could use it to give LAvar or Champ a new deal and that would be the best idea of them all.
