View Full Version : Thanksgiving Day Football without us??

I know it's a bit early to be looking down the road, but I just don't understand why the NFL in their infinite wisdom won't give us a standing date with the hated Dallas Cowboys. What's more American than a Washington/Dallas Thanksgiving game? Who in the heck can I call to make it happen???? There have been some very historical games between these 2 clubs on this day in the past. Also, why not showcase THE BEST (MOST WELL DOCUMENTED) RIVALRY IN THE NFL on a national holiday such as Thanksgiving?
Ps. Who in the Detroit Lions organization is sleeping with whom, in order to get them to play on national t.v. every thanksgiving:eek:? Who in the world wants to see them (outside of Detroit, that is)?

LOL...The story goes like this...(as I've heard)
BAck in the day, when the NFL approached the league's owners about doing a T-giving day game, the ONLY two owners that volunteered to do it were those of the Cowboys and Lions. None of the other owners thought the public would come out to their stadium on a holiday. (HOW WRONG WERE THEY!?!?)
Well...its not many, many years later and the NFL has rewarded the boys and Lions for being the trend setters by allowing them every t-giving day game.

Very informative stuff Stouty. Didn't know that. Sounds reasonable (I guess). Maybe the Cowboys should consider us (their biggest rival) for such a game. Has more appeal then if they play, I dunno, say......the Seattle Seahawks or the Jacksonville Jaguars.

I agree, having the Skins/Cowboys on Turkey Day would be a ratings coup for the NFL. If the Cowgirls are going to play every year, then they might as well play a team where there is going to be genuine rivalry.

I know what you mean about Dallas/Washington on turkey day. SKINS/DALLAS, Meat, mash potatoes, and BEER - doesn't get much better than that!!!!!
Really what it should be though - any team that has a bird for a mascot should be hosting a game that day - lol.

I suspect the NFL and its NFC television partner prefers to keep their options open on Thanksgiving Day. The Redskins/Cowboys rivalry means a lot to us, but people in Wisconsin or south Florida or Boston do not necessarily care about it at all. Finding the most attractive game for a national audience is what they care about.

The broadcast network is determined by the VISITING team. Which means Detroit would always have an AFC opponent, and would always be on the AFC network (currently CBS). I'm pretty sure Fox would be happy with skins/boys on T-day every year. But the folks at CBS would not. And one thing you can always count on the NFL league office doing - and that is keeping the tv networks happy.

I guess I'll be the lone one on this. I'm glad that we don't play on Thanksgiving every year. I suppose you have to understand how things are around here during holidays. My wifes father and mother are divorced. And they both are very childish. So we have to go each of there houses on Thanksgiving and Christmas or all hell will break lose. On top of that, we have to go my families house. And then, we have to go her grandmothers house to finish it all off.
So, as you can see I'd miss the game....unless I did what I did when we last played on Thanksgiving.....play sick and stay home. LOL

He CarMike, maybe you should have left that last comment off. :D
You may want to use that tactic again.

I think they should make Thanksgiving Day like RIvalry week in college football. Skins/boys, Packers/Bears, Steelers Brown give one to ABC/CBS/FOX. I think ratings would be higher because it's a holiday and three classic rivalries. Plus that would make 9 hours of football on turkey day. Will a change evert happen? Nope. The other teams don't want to lose a chance to play on Thanksgiving. So unless you included over half of them, you couldn't get it approved.

No offense, but are you guys kidding me?
Yes, alright, it'd be great to have a set holiday Skins/Boys game every year. But think about this for a second. You're requesting to have our guys finish the game on Sunday and then have two days of practice before flying 1000 miles away to play a team we haven't had an easy time with lately every year? A couple sportswriters (Tuesday Morning Quarterback in particular) have fits about how Dallas and Detroit get to host Thanksgiving Day games every year. It's an unfair advantage because they don't have a travel day in an already very shortened week, allowing for a third more preperation time than the visiting team and less fatigue. It's not a good combo.

Its not that much different than any of the regular season Thursday Night games. (like ours in Miami) THe only difference is that the t-giving games are during the day.
Sure...they have less time to prepare for t-giving...but they then have 10 days to prepare for their next matchup.

I'd rather have the standard six and six, myself.

Yeah, but could you imagine if we won that Sunday game, followed by a win on Thanksgiving...........and then 10 days to savor it all!:)

You're scaring me dude. I have tickets (in the Coca-Cola Suite:D ) to the Miami game......I hope it's still on Sunday night (11/23).
Did something change in the schedule?
For the record I saw a stat about the Skins record on non Sunday game and it wasn't good. The one thing I think the league should do with the Turkey games is give all 4 teams their bye the Sunday prior. They can easily do it.

I know that just about all NFL coaches hate the Thursday games because it interrupts their schedules. Gibbs hated playing on Thanksgiving. Dallas and Detroit coaches have generally enjoyed it, however, because their players get used to it and have an advantage because of their familiarity.

Does anyone know whether the the Lions and Cowboys play on the road the Sunday before Thanksgiving every year? I'm also curious as if the teams that they play are at their resepective home stadiums before having to travel to Detroit/Dallas. If they don't, then that is indeed an unfair advantage that the Lions/Boys share.

Hmmm. Good question. I have never thought of it like that before.

i agree with skinsfan1906 we should be playing on thanksgiving day every year, our redskins vs. those hated cowboys, that;s the way it should be all the time. so what if the ohter teams want to play on this day. someone is getting there knee's dirty to get to play every thanksgiving but, i'm not saying any names (lions).
