View Full Version : Akh's (Whit's) Thoughts - Week 12

It appears that Akh has made it back safely from his trip to South Carolina, but his ankle bracelet is causing his internet connection to malfunction, so I will take over the column once again.

This one is going to be short because I am currently suffering through a wave of intense grief, rage, and sadness. It's like I am manic-depressive, but without the extreme highs. Just wild mood swings that shift between depression and anger. That's what being a Skins fan has come to this year.

Anyways, here's what I think about this latest display of suck:

1. Being a fan of this team has officially become a form of torture. Even the wins aren't fun at this point because they still come after an increasingly predictable series of chokes.

The games are not exciting, they are nauseating. The only difference between a win and a loss for me at this point is whether or not I actually puke at the end...

2. In the last two games, Jason Campbell has engineered three long fourth quarter drives deep into our opponents' territory with a chance to take a lead. He has thrown an interception in each one.

I know he is young and has tons of upside, but this is just unacceptable. You don't give it away on every one of those drives. You just don't. He has to learn how to close very quickly because the rest of the team isn't doing a darn thing to swing the game for him, so he has to do it almost by himself when it comes to crunch time.

3. It's upsetting thinking back to how good Santana Moss and Clinton Portis were in 2005. It's like getting married to a Beauty Queen who two years later has put on 100+ pounds, lives in a pink robe, and has taken on a casual meth habit.

4. The first five offensive drives of our first half went like this: Fumble, Fumble, Punt, Fumble, Fumble... In what was apparently a must win game. Again, this team passed disappointing weeks ago. We are firmly in depressing and infuriating territory here.

5. The defense had one of its best games in recent weeks, of course Bruce Gradkowski probably had a lot to do with that. Still, it was nice to see them keep us in the game when we had every right to get blown out before halftime.

A big turnover would have been really nice though. Again, no one is there to make the play that will change the game for us.

6. Was Gibbs under hypnosis when he decided to go for it on 4th and 1 from the Bucs' 4 yard line? I couldn't believe the call but I won't gripe about it since I've killed him for being so ultra-conservative this year. If the play works then it's genius.

I would like to see us get out of the heavy jumbo set on short yardage runs though. Those plays never work.

7. McCardell and Reche Caldwell looked good. It bodes well for Campbell that he can make lesser WRs like these into productive players. On the other hand, they both also made some tough plays that made Campbell look good too.

8. Al Saunders is finding his way with the offense. 400+ yards on the Bucs D is impressive. It's the players that continuously shoot themselves in the foot.

9. Almost every other team that is jockeying with us in the wild card race lost today. That's good news, but this team has yet to seize a golden opportunity this season. It's getting unbelievably old.

10. The silver lining for today is that the last three weeks have been so painful that I think the only way the universe can restore it's equilibrium is for us to run the table and finish 10-6.

One Very Brief Note About the Rest of Today's Games:

1. Sweet game, Eli Manning.

And with that I will retire and hand this column back over to its rightful owner. The doctors tell me that Akh should come out of his alcohol induced coma just in time to catch next Sunday's Bills game, so we will be back in his hands once again.

Hope you all had an excellent Thanksgiving!!

Something tells me Eli was pissed that he had to do the dishes at the Manning household on thanksgiving when his brother showed what a real QB is like on semi-national tv (grumble grumble time warner)

Games like this show why Eli will never be Peyton.

Also, FOUR FUMBLES!?!?!?!?! SIX TURNOVERS!?!?!?!? is all I have to say about the Skins.

Wow, it must suck to be the worst quarterback in your family.

Great write up. The line about Moss and Portis is priceless and dead on.

I just read that we had 315 yards of offense in the 2nd half, but only turned it into 10 points.

It could have been 13, had we not opted to go for 4th-and-a-foot inside the 5, although you could argue that we simply delayed kicking the same field goal, after getting the ball back near midfield and driving it down into FG range again, a very short time later. A good counter argument would be that they couldn't stop us, although who's to say that we wouldn't have found a way to stop ourselves with an additional possession , no matter what our field position was.

Scoring strategery aside, we suck at putting up touchdowns during all parts of the game, and that will need to change before we can avoid the late 4th quarter Maalox moments. That's why I think that it wasn't such a bad idea to go for it, because this team will eventually need to get some rhythm in the red zone.

6 turnovers tell the bigger tale, though, because TB begged us to steal this game from them in the 2nd half, on both sides of the ball.

I agree with pretty much everything, especially the criticism of the 4th and 1 decision. I hear lots of people mention words like "conservative", "gutsy", "ballsy", "scared", etc. etc. etc. To me, the goal should not be to have a coach that is consistently either of those. It's not about making the "gutsy" decision. It's about makiing the CORRECT decision. There are times where you can go either way, with one decision being braver than the other (for example, if you are down by 7 and score a touchdown at the last second, do you go for the tie or for the win? Neither of those is the wrong decision), and there are times where there is one RIGHT decision and one WRONG one (for example the episode you mention).

This is why, for example, I was very unhappy about the first decision to go for it, and satisfied with the second one to go for it (even if the ball was near midfield), even though they were both the same call.

if we had kicked that 4th and a foot field goal from the 4 yard line and not turned it over on downs then we could have tied it up for OT or even possibly won in regulation

The score was 19-10 when that happened. You kick the field goal which makes it 19-13. You still need a TD to win and anything could have happened.

Number 7: They looked open a good bit to me. MaCardell in other games also is finding the open spot too if you ask me. Are the other WR's not doing that? or is Cambell not seeing them. One play was frustrating on the replay, one to Moss along the sideline that was incomplete. Cooley was wide open cutting back to the middle :(

Number 8: Is this the opposite of Gibbs I? His first 5 games were lost playing his "plan" Gibbs envisioned his new team would follow. After those losses he said that he had to change his philosophy, and the rest is history. Is this what he needs now? Seems a little too late though, plus we are loosing in spite of opening up. We need to finish these drives.

Number 3: What is wrong with that chick?? I like her :)

Yeah, but on the last two drives, it would've been 19-16 instead of 19-13; we were well within field goal range when when Jason threw the final INT. But, you never know what else might have happened had we kicked the field goal and then kicked off to TB, instead of leaving them with the ball at the 5 yard line.

I didn't mind going for it on the 4 yard line, but I was really hoping we would have tried to score a TD on that play, instead of just trying to pick up a yard. I think that TB was all set up for a run, and we probably could've gotten a TE wide open in the end-zone if we'd faked the hand-off.

The call did indeed take points off the board, but look at the posting. Do any of us think that this team has anything in them but finding ways to lose? And the most outstanding feature of that is our red zone performance. I truly believe that Gibbs saw the 4th and a football length as a pivotal moment in this season and for this team. He gave them the chance to wipe out past failures and get over the hump. The team failed, and then found ways to lose. This one is not on Gibbs, but on players that can not covert at crunch time.
