Today I was absolutely disgusted by ESPN, allowing these clowns with the exception of Woody Paige, talk about the Redskins and the late great SEAN TAYLOR. Jay Mariotti said the media coverage of his murder has been a little rediculous, stating that hes just a football player, not a world leader, saying the redskins need to get it together. The other guy whose name escaped me said the Redskins have had ample time to mourn the loss and that its time to move on and play football. The only sympathetic one out of the bunch was Woody Paige, who said he doesnt see how the Redskins will be able to play this weekend and believes the league should take some sort of action and move the game. The absolute display of low-class reporting ESPN showed during this time has made me look at them in a different light, they are a joke and dont understand the level of this tragedy. It wasnt just a football player that lost his life, it was a 24 year old kid with a baby and a guy who was really coming into his own, moreso as a man than anything else, and I was proud of him. I had to make a thread about this because there coverage of his passing has been a joke and today its been even worse.

Yeah it's one thing to sensationalize sports scandals and overhype certain players, but this was downright immoral. Woody, as always, is the only guy on the Horn who makes any sense.

Jay Mariotti is trying to make a name for himeself and I can only wish he doesn't lose someone that he cares for as much as the Redskins family care for Sean Taylor.
It took every ounce of my being to be that political.

We seriously have got to stop taking every word these people to say to heart and just for the record I personally am torn over the matter and I think both Woody Paige who is the biggest clown of all, and the rest of the panalysts made good points. I understand how sad everyone feels and I'm with you guys, but this is something people deal with everyday and it is a part of life and with all due respect to Sean Taylor, this is no differant.
When my Grandfather died, I was able to miss a day or two of work because I worked at a coffee shop but we found out during the evening and my Dad, who is a college professor, had no way to cancel his class and went in the next day. I hate to be the one to say this but if the NFL can't work out the logistics, the games should go on. People live with grief everyday.

Weren't you the one that started a thread about looking forward to Sunday on Monday and then felt bad about it on Tuesday?

Yes, because in the thread I mentioned Sean Taylor watching the game from his hospital bed.

ESPN has been becoming a wad of trash for awhile now. As a former regular vistor to their website i've almost stopped going there altogether, using Rotoworld.com for most of my sports information. They don't have good reporters and they seem to keep expanding the roles for things I've always assumed most fans find more anoying. They use the outrageous opinions in hopes of gaining viewership (controversy always brings company) and most people should be tired of it.
Plus they have poor sideline/field reporters at this point and only delve on subjects that they find "important." For example reporting on the possible entrances Bonds would take to get into the building he'd turn himself in? Are you joking? They find time to put bimbo Rachel Nichols on every sportscenter episode yet fail to ask her to improve her skills. Shes a poor speaker and never gets too deep on a subject (rather saying..."I saw the grounds crew and they were having a terrible time in the turf")
I've found myself more and more likely to turn the channel/mute it unless its highlights or a respectable portion of the show (Outside the Lines, PTI, etc)
My point is that what we used to love and enjoy on ESPN (the sports) is becoming more and more wishy washy.
Around the Horn gives examples every day of why everyones opinion isnt needed. The worst part of the show is when the pundits literally repeat what hte last guy said...so its no wonder Mariotti wants to stand out with an insensitive remark
Its like that South Park episode...do you vote for the giant douche or the turd sandwich?

With all due respect to Tom Brady and Peyton Manning and LaDainian Tomlinson, and I hope nothing like this ever happens to them, but if any one of those three had died in the same manner that ST did, ESPN would be airing coverage of it non-stop for the next five years.

I'm refusing to watch, read, or listen anything that isn't coming from Redskins people (La Canfora, Comcast, etc.). The outside DC media only knows Taylor as what they have heard about him with run ins with the law. They know nothing of him from the past 18 months.

Your first mistake was watching around the horn. The whole point of the show is for each guy to try and say the stupidest thing, only to be topped by the next guy. The coverage of this is only going to get worse as talking heads climb over themselves to say something outrageous to get people talking about what they said. Be prepared

The question is do you get my point. Who can tell someone that they've had enough time to mourn. Only an asshole will do that.
I don't see how the media coverage could be rediculous since the national media (like ESPN) and others didn't do much on it.

Why is it that when the media covers someone's (most of the time someone famous) death, people say they're going too far. But on other days when they show nothing but celebrity gossip and fashion tips, no one says a word? I think the coverage of anyone's violent death should be as in depth and detailed as it was when Anna Nicole Smith died. For everyone else, they simply don't cover it as well as they should.

This is different to me because he didnt just die, he was murdered. I feel so horrible because he was so close to my age, Im 22 and I looked up to him, I think that says alot. My whole point of posting this was because you have to show a certain level of respect for someone when they passaway, and ESPN didnt. There coverage of the whole tragedy can be described as minimal at best, and they should have stopped him when he made those comments. Many of the comments that are being made by media outlets outside of the area are sad, choosing to bring up things in his past rather than focusing on how he was becoming a wonderful person and a bright young star. I guess I feel so much for these players even though I dont get to meet them, that it really hurts me inside when they paint such a negative picture of him. I do have love for Sean Taylor and respect him as the great player and even moreso the wonderful man he was becoming.

When I edited my post, all I did was add to it and what I said at first is that I am torn over the matter and I stand by it. All I did was explain what points some of the panalysts I thought were valid and why. I'm not sure what you mean't by knowing me better and I'd be happy if you could elaborate on that here or in pm but that's up to you.

If one of the panalysts said that then I stand corrected but the part I caught was them saying that this is a part of life people deal with everyday and Woody Paige saying the game time should be changed. I don't think anyone would come out and say the words "they've had enough time to mourn" but then again I could be wrong. The point I was trying to make when I brought up my personal tradgedy is not that there should be a time table for mourning, but that it is indeed a part of life.

As far as getting to know people, the more you post and share your opinions, the better I get to know how you think. LIke I said, not bad and not good. Just helps me understand how you think

Don't give crap like "Around the Horn" a second thought. Like someone else said, that whole show and all like it are just moronic and are just about idiots coming up with the "best" sound byte. I despise those shows and that whole style of "news entertainment."
And don't fall into the trap of getting upset because the rest of the world isn't sharing our grief the same way we're feeling it. That's the nature of life. If you're not invested in something or someone, it's human nature to not be as affected when that thing or person leaves this earth. Grieving like this is not fun. It's horrible. No one wants to deal with those feelings ever. None of us want to deal with them.
But we HAVE to, that's the difference. Sean was ours, and grieving for him and making sure his memory is upheld properly is OUR responsibility as his fans.
Just take what you've seen from the media over this story and realize that it's OFTEN that way with EVERY story. And next time you see some story about a tragedy that you're not personally invested in and are about to just put it out of your mind and walk away and get on with your own life, or make some sort of dismissive comment about it, just stop yourself and spare a thought or a prayer or whatever for the people involved and the people who are grieving over it.
Because now you know what it feels like. And there's no excuse not to anymore.

Honestly, I don't know how you guys manage to deal with the media over there. In these past few days, I haven't said anything about it yet, but have been absolutely disgusted by the media coverage (especially ESPN) of the whole tragedy. There have been a few positive exceptions (Mark Schlereth for example), but as a whole, it was revolting.

I know we are all sensitive to the subject, so my advice is to not watch any shows like this that thrives on heated debate and outrageous statements. I had no doubt one or more of those idiots on this show would take the "thug" stance on Taylor.
Refrain from watching...

There's a difference between, and no disrespect to your grandfather, an older person passing away and a young person being violently killed. I've dealt with a death to my grandfather and wasn't given any time off, nor was anybody (other than my grandmother) in my family. Older folks pass away, it's the way things are supposed to be, tragic and painful as it may be. But a young, promising star being ripped away by violence is a completely different story.
Should we, as fans, move on quickly? There's a good case for that as we didn't know him personally and he wasn't a part of our daily life. We should mourn, don't get me wrong, but we shouldn't let this get in the way of what we do for an extended period of time, like what would be expected of the family or close friends. But how should the players and coaches deal with this? I don't know, and I don't think anybody not in the Redskins' organization has any right to say what they should, or shouldn't do. They certainly shouldn't just "grow up" and move on and play football. Play football, yes, but they should be allowed a grieving process and to deal with it in a manner fitting of the way they lost a friend and colleague.
