The Saints are so inconsistent that its hard to predict what they'll do. They could win all three of those games, they could lose all 3.

Eh, I hope they can lose two of those matchups. It's possible they lose em all. It's possible they win em all. Let the games be played out. Remember, if we don't win out, it doesn't matter how the other teams fare.

This may have been mentioned elsewhere but NO plays the Cards at 1 next Sunday. So hopefully they lose then so the team knows whats up before they play Sunday night. It'll be awfully tough to win the next 3 games but a little piece of mind certainly wouldn't hurt.

never mind just the team.. atlanta is home base to some pretty serious heavy hitters in the civil rights movement.. and you notice that he didnt say vick would be welcomed back as a falcon, only that he believed in redemption (while the falcons try to recover 20 mil in bonus money from vick)

i dont know how well that is going to sit with the city of atlanta..

It didn't come off that bad to me.

The context was the guys asking him about Vick staying in shape and not being able to train like he normally does.

Blank said if he shouldn't eat Fried chicken and fries and put on 20 pounds. (I can't remember if he said anything else about it)

He did add fries making it two fattening foods and didn't saying it blatently like Zoeller talking about Tiger Woods ordering Fried Chicken for the Master's dinner years ago.

Long story short, it didn't sound like there was anything behind it at all.

Exactly. There was no context to it like with Zoeller's remarks and who cares anyway. People need to stop being such PC little girls. Fuzzy's remark about Tiger wasn't unprecedented. The year Bernard Langer won the Masters, someone joked that they'd be eating knockwurst and kraut the following year and no one cared.

OMG! He said fried chicken! How racially insensitive!

I guess I agree with this....BUt it was still stupid for an NFL owner to say. The only way he could have made it worse was throw in black eyed peas and a 40 ounce malt liqour reference.

Wait, so are you saying that Zoellers comments weren't inappropriate?

This is what he said:

"That little boy is driving well and he's putting well. He's doing everything it takes to win. So, you know what you guys do when he gets in here? You pat him on the back and say congratulations and enjoy it and tell him not serve fried chicken next year. Got it? or collard greens or whatever the hell they serve."

He deserved to lose every sponsorship and deserved to get skewered for these blatently racially motivated comments.

They were inappropriate but no one cared when someone made stereotypical comments about a German. Why is one race untouchable but others are fair game? Better yet, why are people so damn sensitive?

Because Germans weren't systematically oppressed for 200 years....It is not that hard to understand why...

allright this thread took a bad turn. I amgoing to stick by my thought that Blank should not have made those comments and it will hurt his standing with his team and community. Atlanta is a racially charged city due to it's history and Blank has lived there long enough to know that. He knew he was going to be asked these questions and chose an answer that could be offensive, and at the very least made light of a bad situation.

akhhorus
12-11-2007, 09:00 AM
Considering that Blank is a prominent white figure in a southern city that was one of the epicenters of the civil rights movement, and with the racial issues in the NFL(no black owners, few black GM/coaches, predominantly black players in the NFL), Blank shouldn't have said what he said.

Dustin touched on exactly why. There was never any prohibition of Germans playing at the Masters in the way that there was a history of Blacks being denied to play at Augusta National, add in the fact that racial stereotypes of the type that are contained in the Zoeller comments have done harm to the African American community as a whole. I don't think German Americans can claim the same oppression, and therefore the same harm from the Stereotype. Furthermore, I'd like to actually examine the quote.....Im sure it didn't contain the blurb "or whatever it is they (Implied those people) serve/eat".

Im not overly sensitive, but I know when someone is trying to insult me, and thats what Zoeller was doing. Insulting a whole race of people based on his conception of their food/diets. And for the record, my Filipino wife makes the best damn collard greens I've ever had.

Understood, Sean. And I don't excuse what Fuzzy said, nor do I think he didn't deserve to lose his endorsements.
My point is that you should either be able to stereotype all races or none, period.

Anyhow, back to Blank's comment. What is the first fattening food you think about in the south? Fried chicken. That is a southern thing, not an African-American thing. Some people are making a big reach here.

I don't think one should publicly engage in stereotyping at all, but to the extent one does, it becomes a question of intent, which is why I wanted to examine Langer's (sp?) quote. What was especially disturbing to me about Fuzzy's quote was his reference to Tiger as "Boy".

I have no opinions on Blank's comments, because I didn't see or hear them, but I have the sense that they probably didn't have the same intent that Fuzzy's had.

Definitely with the grits but BBQ is more of a Carolina thing. My mom is from Alabama and I grew up on fried chicken, cornbread, greens and grits.

My understanding is that whoever wins the Masters gets to choose the banquet dinner the following year. When Langer won, supposedly people were joking about having to eat wurst and kraut, etc. I doubt I can find any quotes on that but it's like a yearly joke based on who wins. Regardless, there are always things you can say among your peers that would be deemed offensive in public.
