Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders has signed a five-year, $37.5 million contract with the Colts that includes $20 million in guaranteed money, according to NFL sources.

The contract makes Sanders the highest-paid safety in the NFL.

Sanders, whose playoff performance sparked the Colts on their run to a Super Bowl victory last season, would have been an unrestricted free agent after this season.

So now they have paid Manning, Freeny, Harrison, Wayne, and now Sanders to very large contracts. People always want to throw the Redskins under the bus for their driving up salaries. Why is nothing ever said to the Colts?

because they win while the Redskins lose.

B/c they aren't owned by Daniel Snyder nor are they in the nations capital I suppose Mike.

Both responses are very true.

that is a very high risk/high reward signing.. he is a tremendous player when he is in. he makes the defense totally different in character.

BUT what are the chances that he stays healthy for any great length of time ?
he is involved in a lot of violent collisions around the line and he is not the biggest guy.

still, credit polian for get a key piece signed

Good move by them. Bob Sanders was, in my opinion, the second best free safety in the NFL up until November. Now he's the best.

Excellent choice by Indy with this. He got them to the Super Bowl last year and don't be surprised if he helps them knock off the evil Patriots soon. Besides Taylor (sniff sniff man I'm never gonna get over him) Bobby Sanders is the real deal at safety.

Add to those comments that the Colts keep re-signing their own to big contracts, not other team's free agents.

I'm glad the Colts kept Sanders, I didn't want the Skins even tempted to make another big investment at the Safety position. The only thing we need in the back is a CB. The rest of the focus on defense needs to be on the front 7. DE and either OLB or both.

I worry that Snyder won't want to be outdone. And there is a very high risk with the money they shelled out to Sanders. Better hope he stays healthy, unless they tied an injury incentive to reach that money.

EDIT: Maybe Polian talked the league into making Sanders' contract actually take that money away from the cap, as opposed to adding to it.

would of cripled any other free agent addition sif we signed him,i agree with sahlly if he gets hurt the risk will show he gets banged up a decent amouint with his small size and wreckless abandon

And to think Snyder probably had the plane all warmed up and ready to go.

i would be very surprised if the bears are able to re sign briggs.. but you never know

we could end up with bly because of his upcoming bonus. i just dont see the broncs paying that and unless they can re do his contract, he might be on the street again

I think briggs is as done a deal as their can be at this point in the season...I felt the same way last year about Fletcher. I think we'll probably add a solid CB and maybe a S or a DE. Just posted in another thread it looks like the Eagles are parting ways with Kearse, he could bea cheaper vet to throw in the mix with Daniels probably on his way out, even if we still draft DL in the first. He had a pretty serious knee injury to overcome from 06 and probably wont be himself until next season.

Yeah thats exactly how I meant, a vet to be used in a rotation while the young guy is getting ready, I think we still have to draft for both lines.

I'm not 100% sold that Sanders is the real deal if he leaves the Colts. It just seems that they always have solid Safeties no matter who they have.

Almost a repeat of my WR thread. We dont need Sanders even though he is a player. I would develop Doughty who has been playing better and if we need to bring in someone, get wilson who would be cheaper. I like LL playing centerfield. GO SKINS !!!!!!

I want a DE with the 1st pick. Not sure of the money if daniels is worth more than kearse, I would keep daniels if he is cheaper or close to the same only because he can play inside also.....if that is the only choice. GO SKINS !!!!!!

What about Adrian Wilson in Arizona? How many years does he have left on his contract? I wouldn't mind seeing him and Landry in the secondary. I also think we should go after Bly if the Broncos let him go and Trufant if we can afford him. I think Briggs is probably already looking for a house in Northern Virginia.

Wilsons claiming he's the best S in the nFC and wants to be paid like it, he has 2 years left on his deal and is asking for another raise, he just renegotiated it in 2004, I'd have to pass on A.Wilson and look for G. or E. Wilson...lol.
