View Full Version : What this loss should teach us

Is to not put yourselves in this situation. There is no reason your backs should be against the wall before you start playing like they did the final 4 weeks. This was a good football team, what they did the last 4 weeks was not an aberration, they were capable of this all along. If they will just focus next year on treating each game like it's their last then we won't have to win in to get into the playoffs. We'll be able to do better than a 6th seed and having to fly cross country to play in the loudest stadium in the NFL. Wouldn't it be easier to have a home game for the playoffs? Even if we aren't one of the 2 best teams and get the bye, at least go 11-5 and get a playoff home game. This team is capable of that imo, I don't think we have to always have the mid season losing streak and have to fight just to get in.

The two years we've gone to the playoffs this is what we've experienced, we can make it easier on ourselves, I hope next year we are able to put together a great season instead of a great run.

I think we are close though, I don't think we need much and I do believe Gibbs should come back, I think he can lead us to a Super Bowl. This loss is hard but we aren't far away I don't think.

you cannot overestimate the importance of good line play.. the difference between the 2 teams was not in the skilled positions, but in the offensive and defensive lines.. that is where the upgrade is needed this off season

The problem is that if Gibbs can't get them motivated to give a crap until their backs are against the wall, it doesn't matter how much talent we have and we'll never be close to the Super Bowl. This means we'll almost never have a homefield playoff game, and its very tough to win a super bowl(or even make one) to win 3 straight road games against playoff caliber teams.

and get rid of Fabini while they are upgrading, I'd rather Joe Bugel himself play than that bum.

Fabini actually fricking tackled Portis on one play today. Bad enough that he's not blocking...

I wonder how'll Buges will grade that one out during the review. I'm hoping it involves calling Fabini into his office and throwing a golf shoe at him.

it wasnt just our offensive line that was overmatched.. our front four was incapable of getting pressure by themselves. even our blitzes didnt threaten hasselbeck that often.

on the other hand, credit the seahawk front 4 for constantly forcing the skins to max protect.. and even then they were able to beat the tar out of collins.. we will never know whether the outcome would have been different had collins had the kind of time he had in the past 4 games...

Yeah, the Skins need a stern talking to from Mark Richt about the value of having great lines on both sides of the ball.

Something I was wondering... A couple of times when they were in that max protect, Heyer would move to double the DT with Fabumi and leave Sellers or Cooley on Kerney alone. Is it drawn up that way or was it a mistake

it really didnt matter. no matter who they had on kerney he was all over collins. and the other linemen made life miserable for collins and the backs..

it should be exhibit A for why we need to focus the draft on the lines this offseason

Fabini is known in the locker room as FURbini - the guys say that he looks like he poured super glue on his back and rolled around on the floor of a barber shop - so if we have to keep him on the line can we have him turned around backwards and playing without a shirt? i don't think the opponents would go near that:lol1:

I know that wimp makes our team look like a circus act. If he wants to watch fine but no more showing him during games.

Which is why I think an extension would not be in our best interest. As I said in another thread, we probably have a 50-60% chance of making the playoffs under him, but his preparation for some of the games and the way he coaches big games will not take the skins far enough.

Fabini sucks. He had a big part in costing us this game. Swiss Ham is next in line.

That is all.

There are better suiters than Swiss. At least he has a legit excuse for barely missing that kick. Even if he just straight up missed, he still has had an average season and definitely not the second worse thing we had going for us. How about Cooley, did he show up? Moss? Cooley was so ineffective at blocking that they probably just told him to run routes, which he then went on to drop those passes. This team looked spent the second they hit the field.

Moss and Cooley both made big plays in the game. Cooley dropped one pass, Moss dropped one and gave up on another. Swiss missed a gimmie kick and there is no excuse for that. A friggen Kicker has no other job but to make those kicks. They should never be compared to real players.

No, Cooley had at least 2. He dropped a sure first down, and then the one on the 1st or 2nd down after the Mix recovery( that would have put us on the 1-2 and the kick would have never been missed. Cooley also let Kerney get to Collins a couple of times. For both Moss and Cooley, the bad outweighed the good by far.

This loss teaches us several things:

1. We are emotionally spent (with STs death or not) after being in the playoffs for 4 or 5 weeks before we reach the playoffs. That is too difficult for these athletes to handle.

2. Gibbs and Saunders need to coach JC like they did Collins from the start of the season. Open the offense and let the whole team try to win the game.

3. Stop coaching SCARED during the year. Stop trying not to lose and go for wins - we may not make the playoffs but this methodology leaves us gasping for breath come playoff time so who cares.

4. Retool the roster in intelligent ways focusing on each line and re-signing key players (like Montgomery and Collins) while not worrying about big free agents.

5. Find the middle ground in the pre-season in terms of using our players and our scheme. We need to be prepared (that includes you Clinton) and ready to roll right away.

6. Have coach Gibbs decide by 1/2 way in the year if he is coming back or not. If not, try to announce some kind of succession plan if possible so as to prevent distractions.

7. Get rid of some players that are not delivering for the money - Brunell, Fabini (the new Ade Jimoh!), and anyone.

8. Bring in off-season competition for Suisham and Frost. I thought Suisham needed competition before the miss. His range is limited both on kickoffs and FGs (just look at Brown from Seattle for comparison) so we should look at upgrading (not just throw him away because he has made clutch kicks in the past).

Agree with all of these except #8. Emphasis on #6.

Yeah, I just dont understand why the Taylor tragedy had to occur for us to really start playing good football. It's like saying they had it in them all along but they needed something to bring it out.

Games are won and lost in the trenches. We've got the skill positions. We need help on the front lines.

I agree. but I understand suisham blew that kick and that was the change in the game but he has been solid all season so he stays. Just better not happen again.

This loss should teach us that the #6 seed is not the promised land. That it is not a good thing to have to win 8 or 9 straight games to win the Super Bowl. That winning games in October and November would be a wise thing to do. That whatever good you do in December is ultimately useless if you don't do anything good in the 2 preceding months. That winning our division should be a realistic goal, and not a mirage or something that only involves other teams. That homefield advantage is called an advantage for a reason.

And that offensive and defensive lines actually are very important in football games.
