View Full Version : Thoughts on Spurrier?

He seems different. We flashed the ability to move the ball but we didn't go overboard.
I was wondering if we were going a little too conservative too early. (i think we did on defense, nearly preventing the win) That's something that i don't expect to see from SS. He really seems intent on getting the lead and milking the clock. How about the decision to punt instead of kick the field goal?
I think with the way we were last year, we'd be 0-2. But i think Spurrier deserves a lot of credit for us being 2-0. He's really put his ego in check and starting counting W's instead.
I've always loved SS... but i'm starting to feel confident in him. The way he smiled cuz of John Hall's field goal at the end of the half really made me feel like we were going to win.
Thoughts?

Spurrier is no idiot.
He is learning how to adapt to the tendencies of other NFL teams. In the process, he is balancing his attack

The decision to punt instead of go for the field goal was the single best call I've ever seen Spurrier make. He could either take a shot at putting points on the board with the risk of giving the Falcons the ball at the forty if it's a miss, or make the non-flashy punt and dare Atlanta to move the ball sixty yards in nineteen seconds. Great decision.
What's weird is so far in the season, there have actually been a couple instances when I thought Spurrier was going a bit too conservative. Scary.

You're not the only one JDS.
I think Spurrier actually lured the Falcons into his net then took total advantage of them. He's doing something he took for granted last season, he's analyzing team's defenses.

Bottom line is we are winning for a change and I think if we pass protect better we can finish teams off and not have to just try to hold on.I just dont think we have reached the level of be able to protect Patrick so he can pick apart the D.It's amazing he finished the game, as many hits as he took.

Spurrier is a better play-caller this year than last year. He's made the college-to-pro transition there. Too often, though, this team looks sloppy on offense. Who is responsible for protecting the quarterback? At least two of those sacks came when a defender came in unblocked. That's on the coach. And too many stupid penalties.

I don't know the name of the offensive line coach off the top of my head, but betwene penalties and blocking he's got his work cut out for him this week.

Kim Helton is the offensive line coach.

We're going to have to keep a back in to help chip on Strahan this week or roll Ramsey away from him.

We'll have to teach our backs to block first, Mike.

Seems as if Spurrier was telling the truth when he stated that he had learned alot from year 1. I have absolutely no beef with him at this juncture.

That punt alone notched him from a C to a B on my grade for the Skins this weekend. He is shwoing alot more trust in the D to finish off the game.
I hate to say it man, I think alot of our problems are coming from our high-priced, overpaid tackles.
In these 2 games, these guys are playing like free agents, and not the high draft choices they were. These two should be ashamed of themselves for the high school goofs these two are pulling, particularly Samuels.
I am sure to ruffle a few feathers with this, but I honestly believe (after watching him now the last 2 plus seasons, that he is a bust....plain and simple. He can not block and I am tired of people making excuses for him. I can count on the fact that he will get called for some stupid false start penalties and that the guy lined up opposite of him will school him from start to finish of the game.
He does make some good plays on occaision, but it is not enough in my eyes.
The fact we are winning in spite of these two is a testiment to the grit and heart of Ramsey.
I am proud of how we are grinding out our wins and definitely very confident in the play calling, coaching abilities of our coach.
Someone needs to work with these two (esp Samuels), and get these two to give us an honest effort out there. They just are not getting the job done at this point.

I think it is obvious that he wants to win first and foremost. His play calling is reflecting that.

I have to admit I was a serious "doubting Thomas" with Ball Coach. I didn't think he would put his ego in check and run the ball. Spurrier has convinced me he has learned to win in the NFL. I guess winning is more important than forcing his system win or lose(see Mike Martz).
