I'm not sure what the coaching/GM changes will ultimately mean for the Skins but here is another crack at an off-season mock:
2008 Redskins Off-Season MkII

Lingering injuries to Carlos Rogers and Rocky McIntosh complicate the Skins off-season plans. A lot of fans feel that Briggs will be a Skin in '08. It probably will happen but I'm not a big fan of that move. Briggs has much more talent around him in Chicago, plays in a different system, but he is a very good player. He will command big $$ and other teams with more cap room may outbid the Skins. To me, if we sign Briggs he will be yet another FA who doesn't live up to his price tag. I think the Skins should take a conservative approach in FA, similar to what the Pats did in the 1st half of this decade.

1. Cut/Trade/Retire:
Brunell, Caldwell, Wade, Fabini, McCardell, Lloyd, Daniels, Godfrey
Shawn Springs to Detroit for a 4th rounder.

2. On the Bubble:
Washington, Griffin – all are older & expensive. It will depend on what the salary cap room is March 1st.

3. Free Agency:
CB Drayton Florence San Diego (5 yrs $20M)
WR Ernest Wilford Jacksonville (4 yrs $12M)

4. Draft:
Trade down from #21 to #28 for a 3rd and a 4th.
R1#30: Philip Merling DE Clemson – a DE to help out opposite Carter. Solid against the run and can get to the QB as well. He may not be availble here so Lawrence Jackson, Jason Jones or Calais Campbell would be good options. Hopefully the Skins will realize that drafting another round 1 CB if Springs goes wouldn't help that much. A fierce pass rush from the Dline can make average DBs look good.

R2#52 Roy Scheuning OG Oregon State – The 2nd most pressing need for the Skins is OG, IMO. Fabini was our starting guard most of the year so it's obvious the depth was terrible. This pick addresses that.

R3#84 Patrick Lee CB Auburn – I expect Carlos Rogers to start the season on the PUP list. Our starters would be Smoot & Florence withTorrence as the nickel. We need more, IMO. If Lee is gone Charles Godfrey or Chevis Jackson would be suitable options. Once Rogers is healthy the Skins will have excellent CB depth.

R3#94 Tavares Gooden OLB Miami– despite published reports that Rocky will be ready for the start of the 2008 season, I have my doubts. This pick covers that and prepares for Marcus's departure when Rocky or Gooden takes over for him. Shawn Crable may be another option here.

R4#111: Kendall Langford DE Hampton – A big DE with the size to move inside on passing downs. We need youth on our Dline and Langford adds flexibility. I like Chris Wilson as a situational pass rusher but not an every down DE.

R4#126: Chad Reinhart OT Northern Iowa – More young Oline depth is needed. Our 2007 opening day oline is all 30 or older.

R5#149: Owen Schmidt FB West Virginia – Sellers is getting old and Schmidt is a great blocker and high motor guy. He can learn for a year or two.

R6#181: Jamar Adams S Michigan - I like Reed Doughty but I'm not sure he is a starter at SS, so we draft training camp competition. He may even replace PP if he can't fully recover from his 2006 knee injury.

R7#213: Adam Spieker C Missouri – Another O lineman. Pucillo is decent but was injured a little bit last year. If we can upgrade, why not?

I welcome any thoughts/comments or mocks of your own.

I'm not sure if Briggs to the Skins will happen, but just to put this out there, Greg Blanche was the DC for the Bears when Briggs was brought on in 2003. But I think whoever pays for the top, or one of the top FAs, has to realize they're going to overpay. You overpay for a Ferrari or Lamborghini, but if you have to have the best, you have to overpay.

I think CB or DE may be the real option. I heard from KC Joyner in one of his chats that Nmadi Asoguma (I messed that up somewhere) isn't going to be tagged or resigned. Just putting it out there.

1. Cut/Trade/Retire:
Brunell, Caldwell, Wade, Fabini, McCardell, Lloyd, Daniels, Godfrey
Shawn Springs to Detroit for a 4th rounder.

I like Caldwell as a #4. He has solid hands and runs halfway decent routes. Although he's not the typical big body, he did have the highest vertical of his draft class. Wade can come back for a somewhat decent contract, he's still among the best back-up options for the short term. Retaining Godfrey for the vet min might be a decent idea too, was good in the opportunities he saw.

2. On the Bubble:
Washington, Griffin – all are older & expensive. It will depend on what the salary cap room is March 1st.

If we get Briggs (maybe even if we don't), Washington needs to go. His cap is pretty big this year and we could net a decent pick from him. Griffin, eh, I'm not really sure. Shaun Rogers may be gotten from Detriot for real cheap and with an extremely incentive laden contract, he may be forced to get back in shape. He could be great.

3. Free Agency:
CB Drayton Florence San Diego (5 yrs $20M)
WR Ernest Wilford Jacksonville (4 yrs $12M)

I haven't done much research in this side of things so sounds good!

4. Draft:
Trade down from #21 to #28 for a 3rd and a 4th.

A lot of chatter about Cromartie, he may be the pick here, if he's available. Otherwise, sounds good either way.

R2#52 Roy Scheuning OG Oregon State – The 2nd most pressing need for the Skins is OG, IMO. Fabini was our starting guard most of the year so it's obvious the depth was terrible. This pick addresses that.

If the first pick is CB, obviously the second should be DE. Otherwise, I think OT or OG. That's just me.

R3#84 Patrick Lee CB Auburn – I expect Carlos Rogers to start the season on the PUP list. Our starters would be Smoot & Florence withTorrence as the nickel. We need more, IMO. I'm not sure I'd take two DEs and where did we get the second 4th rounder??? I know we traded Springs to detriot, but we don't have our own (Lloyd trade still biting us?)

Do you know the cap implications for each move? I am just wondering if this scenario is even possible. I need to find that site that lists all our contracts...

Brunell will open up about $5M
Caldwell, McCardell, Godfrey, Fabini all had one yr deals
Lloyd will cost us $5M in space
Springs will cost us $7M in space

Florence and Wilford will only take up about $5M in cap space and with Cooley's bonus conversion opening up $10M in cap space, we'll need to make one or two "classic" restructures to get us some space for draft picks. So this scenario is possible.... well other than the fact that we won't be trading with Dallas (they own the 28th pick).

Your comments are valid. What I envisioned in this mock was trading down with Jacksonville - and getting an extra 3rd and the 2nd 4th rounder you see in my mock. Jax now sits @ #26 so I'm not too sure they would do that trade. I was envisioning Langford as a DE/DT type but I concede that may be a luxury we can't afford on draft day.
