Redskins land Mitchell from Seattle

February 12, 2008 7:38 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Mike Sando

Stump Mitchell and the Washington Redskins reached agreement this afternoon on a two-year contract. Mitchell joins Jim Zorn's staff as assistant head coach/running backs. The Seahawks had been reluctant to let Mitchell, their running backs coach since 1999, leave on a lateral move. The "assistant head coach" portion of the title makes this a promotion.

Zorn identified Mitchell and Tennessee Titans assistant Sherman Smith as coaches he wanted to add to his new staff. There is nothing official on Smith yet -- he was expected to have dinner with Zorn tonight -- but Mitchell is leaving the Seahawks to join the Redskins.

That makes getting Sherman Smith more interesting. He is an assistant HC in Tennessee so this would not be a lateral move, but a downward move as far as the league is concerned. But I guess if he is coming to interview, then the Titans must have given him permission.

When? I thought we just retained him like a week or two ago, somethings wrong here.

I don't like how they did Byner like that. I thought he was a fine coach. But I guess Zorn has the right to bring in whomever he wants.

no, if smith is coming here as OC, that would be a promotion compared to RB coach, even with the added title assistant head coach

i dont think tenn is expected to block the move

We offered Byner a one year contract, Byner left it on the table to interview with Tampa, we hired Zorn and pulled the offer before he signed it. Rumor is he's going to Seattle.

Well that is the Redskins side of the story...BYner and the media reported that Byner either signed the contract, or went to sign the contract and it was pulled from him at the last second, before Zorn was hired btw.

Zorn didn't waste any time hiring these assistants. I like it.

Is the janitor at Redskins Park called Assistant Head Coach/Janitor?

Which is kind of a relief ............ there seem to be a lot of speculation that Zorn was in awe of the situation and more than satisfied that a coaching staff was in place.
IMO - I don't care who he brings in ( it's not like any of us REALLY put too much into who was assisting the HC, OC, DC, and STC) .....all I want to see is a winning team put on the field.

I mean Sherman and Stumpy. The Redskins are usually slower than a glacier with these kinds of
things. lol

Edit to add that Zorn seems already over the "Golly Gee" phase and is moving ahead with bizness.

Didn't we just extend Byner's contract. Is Earnest gone now? Why haven't the SKINS posted anything?
