Why not just field an entire team of guys from The U? It would make prospecting talent so much easier for Vinny and the boys.

It will be interesting to see who if anyone is interested...
I'm tired of trading. I want a couple years of actually trying to develop our players.

I realize Fletcher is getting older but if I'm not mistaken he and Vilma both play MLB...really no need. We have holes-o-plenty but IMO... MLB with Fletch and Blades aint one of 'em .

If the Redskins were interested, I'll bet they could easily strike a deal for Vilma.

The Jets honestly might cut him, but it would be nice to pick him up for a '09 4th round pick....other than that we should probably pass.

our 09 4th round pick is already the jets property for the pete kendall trade

that seems to be the reason for lack of interest, and possibly why they want to trade him....
so sad, before the injury he was going to be one of the better LB's in the league. if they cut him i have no problem bringing him in here for depth and letting him slowly rehab and stuff. godfrey probably leaves, so this guy could be useful, but i wouldn't trade a pick for him, unless its a 6th OR 7th.

Whoa, why are they trading Vilma? Has he fallen out of favor? I thought he was a good LB.

The New Orleans Saints completed a trade with the New York Jets to acquire linebacker Jonathan Vilma.

Thats a pretty good deal, actually. A condtional 2009 fourth round draft pick for a linebacker one year removed from making the Pro Bowl? Smart move by the Saints. Even if he doesn't make it back to pre-injury form, it was still a good trade.

This report makes the deal a bit better for the Jets. With Harris performing so much better than him in the 3-4 and only one year left on his contract I can live with this.

Ok, here's the deal on the Vilma trade. Stay with me because this gets a little twisty.
The Jets received a fourth-round pick in the upcoming 2008 draft. That's theirs and they will use it or trade it or whatever they want to do with it in two months. If Darren McFadden is around in the fourth round, he'll be a Jet.
Now, if Vilma reaches certain playing time levels AND he winds up signing an extension with the Saints (remember, Vilma didn't renegotiate so he's a free agent after the 08 season), then the Jets will get either a second or a third rounder in 2009 but they would have to sort of pay back the original value of the deal by giving the Saints a fourth-round pick.
So the best case for the Jets is that they wind up with a fourth this year, a second next year, but have to give up a fourth in 2009.

Harris (his replacement) is much better. Vilma has done nothing in the 3-4 but should be a nice addittion to any 4-3 defense in need of a MLB if healthy. If he pans out or signs a extension the Jets will end up with a 4th this year and either a 2nd or 3rd next for Vilma and a 09 4th.
Due to his not fitting Mangini's sytem and the injury, I guess I can't complain too loud about the deal. If he had remained injury free in 07 we possibly could have received a 2nd rounder this year.

It's still a horrible deal for the Jets.

So, depending on his play, it's either a 4th in 2008 or a 2nd or 3rd in 2009 minus a 4th in 2009. Good deal for the Saints.

I'm really suprised there wasn't more of a market for him. He was a beast his first 2 years in the 4-3.
The Jets were right to deal him but I bet they are a bit pissed they couldn't get more.
