WR Matt Jones can all but kiss Jacksonville goodbye. That’s what one team insider told us regarding the hugely disappointing 2005 first-rounder. The insider said the Jags will likely keep him around for training camp but that he would have to have a lights-out showing in camp to stick on the roster. The offseason acquisitions of Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson have lessened the Jags’ need at receiver.

I think the guy still has potential and would be worth a look if he were to be cut.

I would bring him in as a TE for the Tiger formation Zorn should be running.

I would take a flyer on him, wich he would just be released now though so we can get him into camp

takes more then measurables to be a wide reciever in the NFL. he has great talent, did wonderful in the combine and used to be a QB. If they don't realease him until training camp is over then i would only bring him in should we have injuries, but if they let him go before then i think we should bring him in for competition and oppurtunity. Worst he does is he gets cut and we are back where we started.

He shouldn't have been a first round pick, IMO. He was a QB as a senior at Arkansas and didn't play WR until the senior bowl, from what I remember. There was already precedent for his transition in ARE and the Jags ignored it.

Anytime Troy Williamson is brought in to take your place is a bad sign. But, Matt Jones is tall and fast, and we need someone tall and fast. I would bring him in for a look-see but I would leave my wallet at home.

He won't be left sitting around and looking for a job for long. He has the physical tools to be something special, he just doesn't have the experience. If we can get him, more power to us, but I really don't care.

I've watched him play quite a bit over the last few years. He has physical gifts but from a position standpoint he's a tweener with no true home. He might be fast in a straight line on a track wearing zero pads but it doesn't translate. He never makes guys miss. Can't change direction. He's not as tough as you'd think for a big guy. He regularly loses jump ball contests with guys 8 inches shorter. He's looks lethargic and unmotivated.

Yeah i have my doubts about him too but maybe he has a motivational problem rather than physical.

I agree with this but also think, as Akh mentioned, that in certain TE sets he'd be a major mismatch against a LB/SS. Potentially getting him the ball quickly and allowing him to get moving could be quite dangerous. Of course, his pedigree will get him attention so I'm not expecting him to arrive in DC.

Is he a good route runner? Generally, I think converted QB's would be excellent route runners knowing how much that helps the QB and maybe having a better understanding of the D than the average WR. Examples are Cooley and ARE, who I think are both good route runners and play well in space showing the ability to get open.

This guy is a mystery to me. By measurables he should be able to provide a team with everything they want/need at WR. Unfortunately, thus far, he has done none of that as a WR. I don't know about him but he might be worth a look.

why do you think he is a mystery ? he had not played WR until he became a pro. he was a projection in every sense of the word without any track record that would lead a team to believe he could play WR.

he was a running QB in college. maybe his natural postion is tight end ? or H back ? or RB ? or maybe he is simply an athlete who has skills that are not transferable at the pro level.

i am not opposed to him being given a tryout to see if he can be useful but one team has already apparently wasted money and a high pick on his "potential".. no reason for us to throw good money after bad.. let some other team give him his second rich contract in the hopes he will become the next hines ward or bert emmanuel or, even, brian mitchell

Unfortunately, he would be non factor as a blocker at TE. His best bet, I think, to keep playing at this level is as a 3rd WR, posession type guy. Love his size and speed, I just think it was too late for him to switch to WR to every be a #1 guy.

If he gets cut he's worth a flyer but Matt Jones is the poster boy for the combine workout wonder. He had all the size and speed in the world but it didn't transition onto the football field.

he's just a mystery to me cause I figured he'd make the transition to WR a lot better than he has. He seemed to be a pretty darn good athlete coming out of college and I thought in his first year, maybe year and a half, he showed some flashes. I'm just surprised it never really worked out better than it has, really.

I'd be open to giving him a short/minimal contract and see what he's got. I'm all for increasing the competition in our WR ranks...and if signing a former first rounder to nudge ARE and Moss, then I'm all for it. Who knows...maybe a new system and change of scenary would be good for the guy.

He possesses amazing football qualities, but I don't think they were used properly in JAX. Maybe someone like Zorn could make best use of the guy.

He has to make it as a WR now, unfortunatley for him. He has wasted too many years not reading defenses to make the transition back to QB, IMO. He will never be a good enough in line blocker to warrant being an every down TE. The only position I think he can play now is WR, or maybe free safety.
