Well, it's only been 2 weeks and a little bit early to start calling ANYONE a "HERO", .......but I do believe that there is ONE person in the Redskins locker room who hasn't recieved the credit he deserves, and seems to have been overlooked in this process:

GEORGE EDWARDS, DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Our D is playing extremely well (IMO). Everyone talked about the losses of Big Daddy, Darryl Gardener and especially MARVIN LEWIS!!!!

All summer, I was hearing that our D would be much worse and go through some growing pains (with a new coordinator and weak D-line).

Honestly, the D is playing probably BETTER than at any time last year (except for maybe the Houston Texans game). The D is only giving up about 200 yards a game and are playing very inspired football. We are ranked near the top in the NFL for total Defense. Schematically, George Edwards is calling EXCELLENT GAMES. Lavar has been used wonderfully. Even Smoot has not been burned for the long ball yet:D!! Has anyone else noticed the difference that George Edwards has made????

Hmmmmm - Yes, I can see where you are coming from and IF it holds up I'll be right there with you BUT let's get some games under our belts - I'll reserve judgement until about game #7 (that will complete what everyone was saying was our brutial part of the schedule). ..... [So far it appears the players are buying what Edwards is selling].

Just the fact of allowing our LBs to move around and put them in positions to make Plays, speaks volumes. We really have to help Edwards out int he draft and get him an effective pass rusher on the line.

I agree 100%. George Edwards has shown us a lot in 2 weeks. And even if we are commenting on him on only two games, we should give credit where credit is due.

He is putting together great game plans. He is mixing and matching zones and man to man and allowing Lavar to line up in different places. In the midst of all of this, everyone seems to know their assignments and covers them. Players are beat physically at times, but it's not due to not understanding their jobs.

Stats are quite good now, and we seem to contain the run, so it's ok.

I like what I've seen so far and hopefully they'll play better as the season goes on. We need more pressure on the QB because right now QB's are getting about 4-6 secs to find a receiver. That's not good enough. I'd like to see Collins on his butt every play this Sunday. Rattle him, contain Barber and we win this game.

Just chatting with the "disheartened" Gints fans at work. Many feel that Edwards schemes will give their team problems. Their greatest fear is that Shockey will get chucked hard off the line and that Champ will be all over Hilliard.
It is nice to know that our DC has made waves with the other teams fans.
So far, I like what I see on Defense, and I am cautiously optimistic that this week will prove a good test of the defense - one that they will pass!

It seemed (I could onlyt listen to the game that our pressure was much better against the Falcs. Hopefully we can rattle the young line they have and get to Collins. We should be able to handle their offense if we play smart, but I think it only takes a little hole for them to squirt through and break it open.

I hope Champ is on Toomer -- he scares me more than Hilliard

That's not good enough. Precisely. The Redskins need to put a lot more pressure on the passer than we are right now. Not all of this is Edwards' responsibility, of course. His players need to play well. I suspect that's the real problem. Seems to me Edwards is doing about as well as he can with what he's got. Give the guy a premier pass rusher off the edge and the defense might be a top five unit. [For the entire season, not just the first two weeks against backup quarterbacks.]

Shockey is going to cause our D some problems. Our safeties cant handle him alone, I think we will have to commit a LB to him, probably LA.

I suspect Armstead will cover him since Shockey will be lining up on the strong side and LA usually plays the weak side.

This better be about the defense. OH, it is...

Yeah, it kind of pissed me off that people acted like our defense would collapse with out Lewis & Gardener. Like Ray Rhodes(top 5) & even Schott's (top 10) defenses were chop liver! And Gardener wasn't playing well before he got here, so who made who? Why did he make us good, instead of us making him good?

We've had a stable core of quality for three years on defense. Smith as the best lineman. Arrington as the best linebacker. Bailey as the best cornerback. It's easy to fill in the rest when those stay constant.

I love the defense. For three years it's never let us down. Edwards has great players, but I credit him for not messing up a good thing. NOT something I take for granted (I remember when our D blew & for a long time). We did a good job of catching lightning in a bottle the last three years with different defensive co-ordinators, but it was time to hire someone for their future & not their past. Edwards is doing a good job.
