View Full Version : Disappointment Over a Pick

Anyone else a little frustrated we didn't take Owen Schmitt with our 4th rounder? I mean correct me if I'm wrong but Zorn intends to implement some fashion of the West Coast offense hence the drafting of Kelly and Thomas. Kelly and Thomas are big guys who hopefully will make the catches in traffic in the middle of the field as the WC requires which Moss and Randle El are clearly not built for. I'm as big a Sellers fan as anyone but he's getting up there in age seems we could've used a FB of the future and Scmitt is the first legitimately great old school style(lead blocking, pass protection, good hands, running ability) I can remember. Thoughts?
Note: A rival head coach once called Schmitt "a runaway beer truck...with no brakes".

Nope(I've watched a lot of Schmitt and don't see why y'all think that much of him), and we probably drafted our FB of the future in Davis.

That's where we picked Justin Tryon who fills a much bigger need, I'm happy

my thoughts exactly..

i see Davis coming in more in jumbo packages like Sellers did this year and being more of a fullback

If he can handle it, save yourself a roster spot, and play him at FB full time. You can then audible to the Tiger formation and have Davis move to TE.

Just dig the throwback FB. Though honestly I really can't complain about the draft much according to ESPN before the weekend we'd had 47 picks in the last 7 drafts; having had 10 this year I mean christ we actually HAD a draft. On a side note Cerrato apparently wasn't the guy trading all the picks away as I now understand it; it was Snyder and whoever the HC happened to be at the time. And yes Gibbs is as guilty of this as Spurrier or anyone. Still haven't gotten over Champ Bailey AND a second rounder for Portis. On the bright side isn't Tatum Bell out of the league?

i think this thread(and any other criticism of our players) is better off 3 years from now. We will see. But there are alot of other players i would have rather taken in the fourth than Schmidt. So the comparison doesnt work for me. I am stoked for all of the guys we drafted and signed as UDFA. Time will tell what this draft was about. We could have drafted multiple probowlers, and not drafted nfl duds. Its a crap shoot. SKINS TO WIN THE SUPERBOWL IN 09.

you think that is his ultimate role ? he has played H back, but he is not much of a blocker yet

I think he'll play his way on the field as a receiver, and guys like Portis and the staff will teach him how to become a blocker.

davis is much more of a pass catcher then a blocker i would be shocked to see him moved in the backfield.....however cooley has played that role

i hope Sellers keeps his starter status, but i agree we may need someone on jumbo packages, especially goalline. Sellers got stuffed a couple of times, seems to me, he keeps his head up and the ball down around his hips. Scared the bejeezus out of me on a couple of runs.

Pretty much he plays for the lions...

So, he was right: out of the league.

Actually I wanted Peyton Hillis from Ark. Perfect WCO FB with Excellent hands & can also play H-Back. Blocking needs work but he has feet like a RB

nah we dont need him here , frustration here only in that we didnt find a way to draft a d.e. earlier than we did ,but with high marks we have gotten for our draft then have to just go with the flow and hope jason taylor demands a trade here lol

A little down that we did not trade our 4th round pick for Fabian Washington of the Raiders like the Ravens did. We could have done that and cut Shawn Springs went with Fabian and Smoot until Carlos Rogers gets back 100% and that would have made the draft an A in my opinon but other than that no big problem with the draft picks.

Because he is a badass and will be a starter in Seattle soon.

With the exception that Davis is a finess player and can't block, he would make a great FB. He will make a good redzone target with Cooley, though.

I liked Schmidt at 4, but oh well.

Not for a year probably, they really like Weaver.

Thats not true. Davis was a very effective blocker, and moving him to Fb means he'll face Lbs more than DEs. I'm sorry we didn't take your fav. team's fb, but Schmidt wasn't a good prospect.

we can use cooley as more of a pass catching fullback, and use davis as a true TE. i like the pick, and i think this is what zorn is thinking

one way or the other, the FB in a WCO has to be both a smooth pass receiver and solid lead blocker.. sellers for certain aint the former

I agree that would have been a steal IMO.....we sure won't get a no 4 for Rogers....

zorn needs depth.....and now we have some.....I thought we were gonna eventuallly be called the Hammytown Redskins....cause it seemed like everyone last year was Pulling hamstrings everyone last year....we needed depth at wr and te imo....

What purpose could cutting our best CB possibly serve? More cap room to spend on... nobody?

we need a backup for Cooley. Sellers is a fan favorite but in his last season. He didn't impress me last season and is on the far downside of his career.

We need new blood and with 10 draft picks for once it will happen.......
