Portis and LaRon ran a race at practice today. The video is up at Redskins.com. Take a look and see who you think won the race.

it looks like laron won, but better yet does anyone have a stop watch? It goes from 17 sec to 21, but lets see the true time.

Without watching the video (and I will), I think that it's good news. Laron is greased lightning. It's wonderful that Portis gave him a run for his money, and didn't hurt himself. Good news in Redskinville, I think... (?)

That was close I thought Portis won with the lean Laron was right there at the freeze angle it looked like Landry was ahead. Very close.
I'm impressed by both guys speed. Landry has jets Portis despite all the pounding still got it.
Both guys in great shape

that was VERY close--looks like a tie even. i had to watch it a couple of times just to find out (not to mention the fact that there were a coupla shirtless guys running which kinda distracted me at first, :D), but if i had to declare a winner, i'd say clinton won.

The redskins.com video gives the impression Laron won with the lunge at the end... but it's too close to call for me.

If you go by the waist. Landry won. But if you go by what track does the upper torso Portis wins. If both would run full speed into each other that would be one HELL OF A NASTY TRAIN WRECK !!

I love the post race interview where Laron said he started looking up at the sky halfway thru cause he knew he already won and looked over to see Clinton with his head down still truckin'. Ha. And Clinton blaming it on the age 27-22, this is what I saw on Comcast earlier. Good to see em having some fun while being competitive.

Landry coming outta LSU was a 4.4 guy or was he high 4.3's.
The Fact that Clinton can run a tie with him after years of punishment says something.

LaRon ran a 4.35 at his combine. The fact that Clinton blew him off at the start says a lot for CP. The guy has come in leaner and lighter and it evidently shows. If you had asked me before the race who would win, I would have said LaRon and not close for CP. Clinton showed me something today.
As to who won, we did. Without having a down the line look at the finish line it is too close to call. Knowing that CP is running under 4.4 again is priceless for me as a Redskins fan, though.

They look in great shape and it is May, that makes me real happy. Clinton is a very stocky guy, his upper body is much bigger than I thought.

i'm just happy to hear portis is doing something even remotely related to athletic activity in the offseason. hopefully every player steps up and challenges portis to a race.

No offense man, but why are you so down on the team ALL THE TIME? I can't recall a positive thing you've ever said about the Skins. Portis obviously still has a lot of speed, so why you have to be negative is beyond me? Masochist???

I will respectfully argue with our fine fan, Smoak, on this one! IMHO, we do not need our premier RB doing this during pre-season! I am concerned that one freak twist in a "friendly" competition like this will haunt us for the whole season!

Hard to tell. The camera didn't seem to be perfectly parrallel to the finish line.
No matter what...both guys ran pretty damn fast and its good to see the guys pushing themselves out there.

I dont know who won, but it was nice to see Portis starting burst ahead of LL and then LL catching up to him. This is the kind of bursts we need from these guys at their respective positions. Hopefully, LL wont be catching up to guys passing him, but will be closing in to pick the ball off.

It is particularly good to see portis running hard in practice. I really like the what I am hearing from all the camp reports I have read.

And I will respectfully disagree with our fine fan, NamVet4. To mangle the words of the great Stephen King, "all work and no play makes Clinton a dull boy." Portis is all heart in the games, but often lacks it in practice. The fact that he was muscling in on the huddle after the screen play to try and get another chance at the ball, in MINICAMP, is great. If running a race is what Clinton needs to do to get inspired to practice, then do it. Don't worry about the consequences. He could twist his ankle walking down the street. That doesn't mean he shouldn't walk down the street.

That's pretty good for Clinton to stay with Laron. Landry ran a 4.38 at his combine last year. If Clinton can stay with Laron that means he hasn't lost too much of his speed.

it's really really really early to be worrying about peak conditioning, but it is good to see portis putting out this kind of effort this early! a faster, reinvigorated portis would be a boon to this offense.
in the past, he's always shrugged off records and stats saying things like "i want to retire by age 26!" or "i hope to sit out the second half of every game because we're up by three touchdowns!" i know he's half-joking when he says that stuff, but there was probably always a grain of truth to it too.
perhaps as he really does creep closer to retirement age, and the record books for that matter (he is piling up some very impressive career totals, you know), a place in history might be starting to look like a goal worth working towards. and i think we all agree he's got the aptitude to acheive those goals, if he commits to them.
it'd be silly to come to that conclusion from a friendly footrace in may, but whatever, it's the off season!!

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Clinton Portis has grasped that concept . . . post game persona's as an example! :smash:
I am concerned about the timing of such frivolity!
Portis is all heart in the games, but often lacks it in practice. The fact that he was muscling in on the huddle after the screen play to try and get another chance at the ball, in MINICAMP, is great.
I find it hard to believe that Clinton Portis does not have heart in practice. His demeanor and presentation during the game is indicative to me, IMHO, that he has the character that verifies that he knows what his commitment is before, during and after the season! As for demonstrating his excitement and his personal pride in his own performance, if this is a one time event, so be it. This is not worth repeating!
If running a race is what Clinton needs to do to get inspired to practice, then do it. Don't worry about the consequences. .
Consequences are a worry... It is bad enough when you loose a key member of Our Beloved Team due to a game related injury. An injury sustained outside of the normal regimen of training camp just plain sucks!
He could twist his ankle walking down the street. That doesn't mean he shouldn't walk down the street.
No it doesn't! But Clinton is not compensated for walking down the street. He does not earn his livelihood walking down the street! He earns a substantial living performing on the gridiron. Why jeopardize that???:smash:
. . . just my 2 cents

I think people are overreacting somewhat to Clinton Portis running a race. He has no history of leg injuries in his career. If we remember he hurt his shoulder in preseason, and broke his hand against Philly, that is the only time he has missed. If this were Santana Moss I might be concerned considering his sensitive Hammy's.
Portis is obviously firmly entrenched in the Redskins off season program and in the context of what he has been doing in the Mini Camp, running a 40 is likely not that taxing.

sprints are part of conditioning. different muscles are used. i think they should run a bunch of 100 yard sprints. stretch first though!

While I agree with your post, he did have some knee tenderness early last season. No major leg injuries, but he has had his legs dinged. But yea, sprints are part of the whole conditioning dealio as Redwolf just said, nothing wrong with adding some competition to it.
These are football players we are talking about, not soccer players who roll around on the ground in agony after getting bumped......;)

i got a couple thoughts on this.
A. im not surprised this happened. I think all athletes are competitive and when a star feels a little disrespected you gotta think he wants to prove himself as the alpha dog (him trying to get back in the huddle, and the race). I don't think this is anything special to portis or landry, rather special to athletes who are just competitive.
B. Landry is crazy fast. as said before, a 4.35 guy. For portis to still stay mad close to him after the years of pounding, especially with the amount of carriers and type of carriers he has gotten here in DC is very impressive, and should make all redskin fans smile. Portis with the quick burst is great, he is a running back and needs that explosion to get through the hole, and stuff that we all know. While i would like landry to have a great burst as well, he has to have something good, he stayed close enough to portis to catch him. His top end speed is great, he can certainly track the ball down in the air. Perfect for a cover-1 defense.
C. As far as injury. Yea they could have sprained and ankle, or strained a hammy, but niether guy is especially injury prone, so i have no problem with this. Tell you the truth, i don't think i would have a problem if Santana ran this (even with his trouble in the legs) because an injury can happen anywhere, anytime. This isn't especially dangerous, so no need to be extra cautious.
And the best quote came from fred smoot afterwords...."And we ain't got no pulled hamstrings neither".....

so i saw in JLC blog. His injury was a broken hand, which i don't think is a chronic kind of thing, and the other was a separated shoulder, which can be chronic and is kind of scary, but he had no problems last season so i don't expect any this year.
The knee tendinitis could linger, but like i said about the shoulder, no problem last year during the season, so i don't see any problems.
I mean injury prone like santana who has fragile legs it seems like. But as i said before, if it had been Santana racing Laron i wouldn't have a problem. If we are too scared to run a race in practice because of injury what are we doing having contact drills? One argument could be made that the race was unnecessary, and thats a unnecessary risk, but i believe it was necessary. competition is good, comraderie is good. we are playing a sport, go out, prove who is best, and compete.

Yeah, I agree.... despite the fact that I don't believe Portis to be a rock, I don't see anything wrong with the race. I like the fact that they are being competitive, and that Portis still has the speed he showed while in Denver, which I thought was lost.

they should all be able to run (10) 100 yard sprints, without injury, every day in practice...if they cant run a 40 yard sprint without getting injured then something is horribly wrong.
i'm surprised Portis kept up with Landry. i'm glad to see he still has that kind of speed.
