I was just thinking. What if Spurrier would have coached like this last year when we had Stephen Davis???? Could we have been a playoff team then. Just wanted to know what you all think. I still think we would have probably fallen short because Ramsey was still a rookie and we didn't have great recievers or O-Line.

NO . . . without the threat of a passing game (no talent on roster) even Stephen Davis woul have struggled as opponents would have stacked the line and forced us to try to pass.
You need to be able to run to pass and be able to pass to run.

Agreed.
SS was trying to call his game with Marty's team (talent wise) and it just did not mix. Hell, even Marty couldn't get Marty's team into the playoffs.

Gotta agree there, though I will throw in a little asterik that says Marty almost definitely would have gotten us to the playoffs if he had another year.

The increase in speed has helped this offense.

Like you wouldn't believe.
That, and a QB who can make all the throws.

I'm not sure if I would believe Marty could get us into the playoffs last year. I know he did a great job towards the end...but I just dont think the talent was there for him.

WHHAAAAT~~~~~~~~~ OH - I see you DID put the word "almost" in there leaving a crack for doubt - CAUSE there is NFW Marty get's us in the playoff his 2nd, 3rd, OR whatever year. MS was affective as a "playoff coach" in the different era with a different type of team. His time with the Skins and now SD is and was a failure. He needs to get back into the booth (I like him on TV).

Marty ran the worst offense I've seen here in a very long time. This team was going no where with him at the helm. Look at him struggle in SD with Ladanian, he is a joke of an offensive coach. The only thing he adds is defensive smarts.

He went 8-3 in the last eleven games of his only season. I'm pretty confident that if we had kept him, added a couple more players that fit his style to the roster, and gotten some continuation on offense and defense, we would have gotten a wild card spot. You can say what you watn about his offense, but it's similar to Carolina's, and no Panther is complaining about their record right now. Marty just doesn't have anything like that sort of defense in SD.

Stephen Davis was not the end all of our wins before. We used to have a team around him, thats why he was good. When Brad was here, we could pass and even with Jeff here we could pass. Davis is a good back, but he is not Marshall Faulk. He is not the end all to the running game. Betts will be just as good as him if and when he steps into the fulltime role.

I agree with almost everyone on this on. It's the off- season talent moves and another season of experience that has helped so far. Not the coaching. Regardless the team seems to be improving in time.
I think having Davis in this offense would be alot of fun. It's not the same offense has last year. Alot more speed, and think about Coles & Davis making defenses scatch their heads. Either we'll burn you with speed deep with Coles, then has soon as you double team and drop back we'll pound the ball up the middle and grain huge yards with Davis.

I need to see atleast a 1300 yard season from Betts before I give him any thoughts of being able to run with Davis

Its tough to envision any scenario where the 2002 Skins make the playoffs. Not with the QB situation as ridiculous as it was. Clearly a game ready Ram, our main man Coles, and Hall have made tremendous impacts on this football team already. We'll just have to see if we can weather this schedule and stumble into the playoffs this season. I'd rather forget the 2002 season right now. Always loved SD though and wish him the best in Carolina.

I don't think we'll see 1300 yards from one back this year. BUT do think we'll see that plus some with a combination. And to me (for right now), that's good enough. JUST WIN!!!
