I found this article to be interesting, and wondered if the rest of you had any thoughts or additions to this list of available vets that could potentially fill areas of need on the team.
SOURCE (http://mvn.com/nfl-redskins/2008/05/21/players-who-could-help-the-redskins/)
I summary, the available players are:
Takeo Spikes, LB
Roosevelt Colvin, LB
Rob Morris, LB
Jason Dunn, TE
Darrion Scott, DE
Stuart Schweigert, S
Rod Coleman, DT
Jeremy Newberry, C/OL
Michael Pittman, RB
Which would be the best fit for a 1 to 2 year contract? Are there any other FAs out there that may be a better fit?

I'd like Schweigert(as I said last night). Darrien Scott is a scumbag who'll be suspended if he signed with someone else. Rosie Colvin and Rod Coleman: I'm guessing that they haven't signed since they can't pass a physical.

meh....
nobody there that is a real difference maker-- even as depth
if we cant find better among the UDFA's and second day picks inthe draft, shame onthe front office. that is exactly what those guys are for...

I wondered about Takeo Spikes as depth at LB, since Rocky's status is uncertain going into the season.
Beyond that, I don't really see a whole lot of talent in this list. I think the team will most likely wait for the trickle of vets that come available after June 1st.
Akh, with Schweigert, would you expect him to play Free Safety, and move Laron back to Strong Safety?

No, I would have Schweigert move to C-2 SS.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the FO make a move for Colvin as we get closer to the season, but only if he is able to pass a physical. Colvin played for Blache in Chicago and is a proven vet. Cerrato learned from free agent busts that your best acquisitions are those where someone on the coaching staff has first hand knowledge of the player. Again, all this is dependent on Colvin's recovery, but he seems a good possibility to me, especially if Gatewood doesn't pan out at SLB.
As stated in another thread, I think we need some quality vet depth at safety and would like to see some stiffer competition for Doughty. If that's Schweigert, so be it (although he doesn't mesmerize me). Does anyone know if there are any safeties that may come available as June 1st cuts?
As for the others:
Newberry -- seriously, you want to take someone from the Raiders offensive line?
Morris -- Meh. I'd rather focus development on Blades, and I don't see Morris as being that much of an upgrade over Khary Campbell.
Spikes -- Overrated and will undoubtedly seek too much money. Pass.
Dunn -- I don't see our TE depth as a problem. Besides, there's several blocking tight ends on the market if we feel we need one closer to the season.
Scott -- Thug. No thanks. It's not the pot arrest that bothers me, but the smothering of his two year old son with a dry cleaning bag while saying "it was a game." Especially with Goodell's new sherriff routine, it's not worth the risk. Oh, and he's not that good anyways.
Coleman -- Didn't we just rid ourselves last season of our older, physically deteriorating, mediocre DTs?
Pittman -- Yes, he has West Coast experience, but this season our running game will remain the same. Why sign Pittman when we already have depth in the return game and when we have Mason breathing down Rock's neck for a roster spot?

I'm not saying Colvin would necessarily be a good signing, just the most likely if he passes his exam. If Blache is a big fan of Daniels and Holdman, perhaps we should rely more on someone else in the FO to make the call, like our friend new friend Morocco.
As for Colvin's injury concerns, I agree, but I'd take him over Spikes.

I'd actually be interested in taking a closer look at Newberry. The Raiders seem to be generally clueless when it comes to trench warfare, so he might be better than advertised.

I'd like Stuart to help add vet depth at SS and either Colvin or Spikes to do the same for the lb corp. But only if we're talking incentive laden deals or close to the vet minimum. If they are asking for starter money then we should hold tight and bite the bullet to develop some youth at those positions.

The only name that really grabs me is Spikes. Spikes was the man a few years ago, he was all over the field. I think injuries may have done him in though.

None of those names really excite me and the only ones that grab my attention are Colvin and Spikes. Don't know their situations, but they must be over the hill and/or have some sort of injury problem I would guess.
S and depth at LB are my concerns at this point. It seems there are always experienced, albeit very average S available throughout the season. This may be harsh but I am not sure Doughty is even average NFL material. Really hope he proves me wrong. Is Schweigert really the only experienced S worth looking at? I was hoping there would be more.
