For the most part its pretty blue collar, with the likes of Springs, Captain Phillip Daniels and London Fletcher-Baker. But who is the face of our defense.
When non redskin nfl fans think of our defense, who's jersey # comes to mind first?
Is it Fred Smoot? Marcus Washington? Carter? Landry?
Just curious, I guess this is a two part question, but who is the face of our defense, and who do you guys think will have the biggest impact ON DEFENSE this year...

face is a toss up between landry and fletcher.
Biggest impact I think will be either of the previous mentioned with a slight edge to landry.

It's still Sean Taylor to me, probably always will be.

I'm not sure now, but I have a strong feeling by the end of the season it will be Landry.

When he first got here, I'd probably say Marcus Washington. Sean Taylor took that over from him, but I have a feeling that the torch will be passed to Landry as the leader/face of the Redskins defense.

Can't say right now. Hopefully by this time next year it's Landry without a moment's thought.

Yeah...Taylor was the face of this defense and no one has taken that title away from him yet.

Funny - I never really thought of a player being the face of the defense the past couple of years but rather the coach (Greg Williams).
Now that he's gone - it will be interesting to see IF a player does fill that role.

It is a rare guy who can be the public face of a defense from the DB corp. Darrell, even when he The Man around the place was never really that guy. When DG was a pup, that was Butz and Dexter, then Charles Mann, etc. Even Monte "Superman" Coleman was that guy for a while at the end of his under-rated career (Monte is still one of my all-time favorite 'Skins). LaVar was really more that guy during Darrell's twilight years.
The current locker room leaders on the D-line are quiet guys with the press, although Phillip Daniels has been speaking up lately. Cornie Griffin is the silent type, as is Malcom X.
Unless we draft a stud defenser who is also outgoing, I think that, what is a largely ceremonial role in any case, will rotate between any number of talkative defenders. Smoot is a grizzled vet now. Tryon seems to be a mouthy dude. Landry is a guy who seems to do most of his talking with the fellas (e.g. the jawing leading up to the Portis race) and not so much with the media. LFB is a good "official mouthpiece" because he keeps the nonsense out of the press but he isn't Blache's guy like he was Gregg's.

Not Landry yet ... but hopefully he grows into that role this year.

Not sure why this is even a debate...
Fletcher hands down.
Most talented and most potential = Landry
However, talent and potential don't make you a leader. I am sure if you took a poll of all the defensive members of the skins Fletcher would come up as the leader. He has experience, he leads in the locker room, on the field, plays hard in training camp, etc... He is our middle linebacker, the anchor of this defense. He will have the communication device in his helmet, he will make the defensive adjustments, etc.
He is the leader no doubt. I will always miss Sean, and he was my favorite player on D, but even last year, Fletcher was still the captain and leader of this defense.

Sorry after re-reading, I guess the question isn't leader, it is IMPACT player... If that is the case then I would say Landry. Taylor was our IMPACT player last season. If we are talking face of the defense, I guess that is a broad question, so I wouldn't really know how to answer. If we are talking LEADER I would strongly argue Fletcher.

I think its Landry.
Fletcher articulates the best, the mood of the defense but Landry has the heart of the fans I get the sense now.
Sean Taylor I agree hasn't relinquished that crown and with me never will.
But Landry's playoff performace and his performance down the stretch with his quiet warrior mindset makes himthe man.

I'll double your $0.02 to $0.04. It's easy--nobody gives LF-B enough credit. Even when we saw him running to an intermediate zone when TO was toasting our butts last year, under GW's silly-gluted cover-whatever, he was the linch-pin.
Taylor was the "impact" guy though, and Landry will take that spot going forward.

Sean T.
by the end of the season, it will be to most nfl fans Landry. But to us die hards, and most of redskin Nation i think it will be Sean for awhile. and there is nothing wrong with that.

i think its LFB. he is the emotional leader and a leader on the field as well, but i believe that landry will take over that role once he matures a bit more.

It's Laron Landry...
The only guy who can even compare in terms of talent is Fletcher, but he hasn't been in DC long enough to be considered the face of the defense. Laron hasn't been around any longer than Fletcher, but he's a "true" Redskin. Landry will emerge this year as not only the Redskins best player, but also as one of the best at his position and will rightfully take Roy's place in the pro-bowl. I think in the publics eye, Landry is the face of the defense, but on the field, it's likely a veteran like Fletcher...

I think as strange as last year was and with all of the changes, the whole team sort of lost their identity. Especially with the coach changes too. Of course Sean Taylor will define the era but I think both sides are going to be making new identities this year. And that's not a bad thing either because there is no question that Sean will always be remembered.

Absolutely Brother Patrick. . . And if, during the season, our beloved Team's defense develops to where other teams fans perceive the unit as a devastating defense, than I am content to let the "unit" be its own face. A true compliment to Team Work. I do not feel the necessity for a single player or coach to stand out. Let time and history define the individual player, coach or group, i.e "The Hogs". . . just my 2 cents

The odds-on bet will be Laron Landry. But my longshot bet, coming off the bench will be Matt Sinclair.....that is once he uses those boxing skills on a cowturd. GO SKINS !!!!!

What about Andre Carter? If he has another year applying good pressure on the QB I think he could be the face.

London Fletcher is the field general and has executed his role extremely well. The defensive players follow him. The public's view is, however, different. Last year the impact player was Sean Taylor, even after his tragic murder. Many will still think of him at the start of next season, and righfully so. However, somewhere during the season another person will emerge and begin the transformation of public perception. Landry's potential is phenomenal. Shawn Springs play is critical (look at our record with him while healthy vs when was hurt). Andre Carter began to display his talent at the end of the season. Rocky McIntosh showed incredible athletic skills and football acumen as the season progressed, before his injury. Each has the potential to capture the public's eye this year.
Who will be the face this coming year? Good question. I hope that several players compete. It would be great if one group (i.e. steel curtain, etc - ) takes it. It would be phenomenal if it ends up being the whole unit.

Up to this point I'd say Sean Taylor. probably still would. But I think Landry did an excellent job when he got plugged in at FS and voting for a guy currently on the roster I would have to go with Landry.

I agree that it will inevitabely be LaRon Landry, but right now I'd say it's London Fletcher. He's the leader right now.

London Fletcher, the guy leads by example on the field and is a leader in the locker room as well, he is a vocal guy. the guy has managed to stay healthy and play at a high level for such a long time. Landry has a lot of maturing to do yet if he wants to become a team leader, which comes with time. On the field he has a lot of talent and should develop into a great player.

I think i have to agree with you. With some penetration from our DT's, i tihnk Andre Carter may turn into the guy that we, as fans, high-five about. GO SKINS !!!!!!
