Please educate me and tell me why JT is being labeled as a LB/DE? Why would they mess with that? He has always played DE and that is the way it should stay. He should be labeled a DE, period. #55? That's a LB number. What the heck is going on here.

Possibly moving him into a hybrid situation in order to try and move him around and get better match ups for him?

Are you serious?
There are so many more things to worry about that have more substance to them. Obviously, the move is to accommodate the Number he wants to wear. BFD.

I wonder if this move makes Blanche consider using a 3-4 from time to time as an ingame change.

Wait...
We got Jason Taylor? ;)
To answer the question: I think it has to do with Zach Thomas wearing 55 in Dallas.

Double nickles
to answer the original question, this is what he was in Miami...he played a lot of snaps standing up as the OLB. in the game against us specifically, he lined up standing up as the OLB and bull rushed Heyer on his first snap in the game. in the game against us, i seem to recall him starting off the line more often than in a 3 point stance.

He is a playmaker folks. He sacks the quarterback and forces turnovers from the defensive end position and sometimes at lb. He flourishes in this specific role. Blache will maximize his havoc by lining him up in the best manner. I'm not concerned about this currently.

They just discussed this on 980. Listing him as LB/DE was done in order to allow Taylor to wear #55.

the real answer to this question is that all the numbers in the 90s were taken.
also jason taylor said this(taken from redskins.com)
"I talked about it with my wife last night and we decided to leave No.99 stay in Miami and start a new chapter up here," Taylor said.
Why 55?
"I like double digits, and 88 is a receiver, 77 is ugly and 66 is a lineman," he said. "I think 55 works."
Taylor previously wore No. 55 at the Senior Bowl in 1997 and was named MVP of the game. He wore No. 33 in college at Akron.
taylor will play DE people, nothing to worry about there. also i think we will drop him back in coverage from time to time much like we did with demetric evans last year

LOL, I like double digits too, in sacks that is. Jason gives us that and I don't care what number he wears.

When I first heard #55 was JT's choice,
my mind wandered to one Chris Hanburger.
The two seem light years apart in so many ways.
Let's hope JT can match Mr. Hanburgers courage,
loyalty, and determination. Hail to #55!

Hey, i don't really care about the number he wears. He's here and we FINALLY have a very good pass rush.
We finally have a freakin' excellent DL and this single addition will add a win or two this season.
I knew there was a reason they kept all that cap money open.....

Lol, I had a feeling he picked 55 because its a double digit number. Plus his boy Zach Thomas wears #55 for the Terds....wonder if that has anything to do with it. :)

Seriously, lol. As long as he is pulling in those sacks, he can wear any number he wants.

DE's are only allowed 60's 70's and 90's. The listed him as LB/DE so the league would approve the number 55. Dont read into it too much as far as the position he will play.

i would say as smart as jt seems to be he researched that number or his agent did to see who had worn it before and no negatives attached to it.
before deciding on the number, probably had never heard of chris.

This is why the NFL should ease up on numbering restrictions. Would be cool to see Jason Taylor wear #88 from the DE position.

Amen. I don't care if he comes off the edge, or off exit 20A on the beltway, as long as puts the QB on his ass, its all good.

If we have to do that then he was not worth trading for. So basically the skins don't have a replacement for Phillip Daniels at left defensive end??

On the Redskins website the training camp notes said that they alternated with the first team defense at the RDE position. I know Jason was the RDE in Miami but I thought they would occasionally line him up at the LDE position. If he doesn't have that type of versatility then we could struggle to see Carter and Taylor on the field at the same time. My hope is that that the addition of Taylor added to Carter is going to make everyone better in the defense.

Why don't you wait to see what happens in a game before getting upset. My hunch is that Carter will move over to the LDE position to maximize Taylor's talent, but its just that...a hunch.

Ummm...let's see... how about mismatches?
Blache must be stoked to have a playmaker like Taylor...like Zorn having the option of Cooley and Davis in 2 TE sets at times...key mismatches

How much you guys wanna bet that if Gregg Williams got the head coaching gig, we would've been on the phone with Philly as soon as Daniels went down, trying to work out a trade for Lito Sheppard?
Gotta beef up that secondary to make up for the loss on the line, ya know.

I'm not sure if someone thought about this already or have posted this thought, but does anyone think Greg Blache will employ any schemes where they line up both Andre Carter and Jason Taylor on the same side? Maybe both on the right side? Andre can move to LB and Jason can play DE. Evans can then play on the left side DE. This would cause tremendous havok to the opposing QB if they did anything like this. Thoughts?

...does that mean that the Jason Taylor trade becomes a bust? We must assume that he will retire at the end of his contract in 2 years and even if he puts up 16-sack seasons back-to-back, we will have nothing to show for it. He will be gone, we will have won no superbowls, and our 2nd round pick will be missed.
The only positive I can see coming out of this if we don't win the SB, is if Jason Taylor somehow helps the younger guys become better.
What do you guys think?
The Iceman
07-28-2008, 11:24 PM
In no way does this trade become a bust without a superbowl victory. The job of every NFL team is to put a competitive team on the field every week. There are 32 teams in the NFL, with that in mind does that mean the other 31 teams besides the superbowl champs have busted with every FA pickup? The answer is no. I would love to win the superbowl, but let's win a NFC East title and go from there.
JoeJacksonTaylor28
07-28-2008, 11:51 PM
By that logic, about 99% of the NFL transactions would be busts. IMO if Jason Taylor makes us contenders, then the trade was a successful one.

07-29-2008, 06:22 AM
As one who was vocal against the trade at first, I'd say that barring a team that COMPETES for the Super Bowl, the trade is a mistake. It is hard for me to envision a scenario where Taylor is labeled a "bust".
Patrick
07-29-2008, 07:11 AM
IMO ..... the trade is a bust IF the Skins are not one of the top 8 defensives in the league (Understand that injuries are a major factor in this) AND/OR JT does not commit to us for at least 2 seasons.
Making the playoffs is a team effort and that means Offense, Defense, AND ST contributions - so I'm pretty sure that JT is not solely respondsible for us making it to the SB ...... or playoffs for that matter.

I think it's ridiculous to pin team goals on a player. If we hadn't made the trade, would the same importance be put on next year's 2nd rounder? Is every good player we have drafted over the years, that we didn't make a Super Bowl, a bust?
If Taylor doesn't give us at least two years of the typical production he has had in the NFL, then we could consider this trade a bust.

I agree; couldn't have said it any better, especially the bold part. If he comes here and struggles to get 7 sacks, then the trade should be considered a bust, but the guy is a player so I don't expect anything less then double digit sacks from him.

If the qustion is "was it a bust?" I think this is good criteria. If the question is "was the trade a mistake?" I think making it relative to team goals is more appropriate. Of course it's unfair to pin the success of the entire team on one player, but if you are not a contender, this trade makes little sense.
The only way I see this being a bust is if he gets hurt.

Same difference no matter how you want to consider it. 2 years from now you can't say it was a good move but it was a mistake. You could eventually look at whatever player gets drafted with our traded 2nd pick and make a judgment but there no way of knowing if we would have taken said player. Get off the fence and either enjoy having a pass rush or yearn for yet another lost lottery ticket.

I think with what we have on defense to take pressure off of him I'd expect JT to have his typical year and make some big plays. He was productive despite having suspect personel around him last season. I'd expect our secondary and and lb's to be much better.
We were ranked 6th overall on defense last year so I think we hold that sorta spot this season with more to's.
I'd be stunned if he was a bust here.

i view getting jason taylor as a continuation of a great off-season.the hiring
of zorn ,vinny cerratto handling the draft and success with the salary cap.
jason taylor will start at lt defensive end.he is more balanced in run and pass rush than carter.he will be matched against larger rt tackles whose strenghts are run blocking.he will also have marcus washington behind him
as lb.they will have the strength and speed to disrupt running to the strong
side which is very critical in a power run game.
also by having to account for taylor and carter on the outside blache can defend the middle against the run.
see you all in tampa baby!!!!!!!!!!
