Redskins, Zorn Build Momentum (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/09/AR2008080902330.html)
Navigating the preseason with as few injuries as possible is the top priority on every team's to-do list at this time of the year, and Washington received a scare when wide receivers Antwaan Randle El and Anthony Mix went into the locker room for X-rays. The receiving corps is thin because rookies Devin Thomas (hamstring) and Malcolm Kelly (arthroscopic knee surgery) have missed considerable time in training camp. Fortunately for the Redskins, Randle El (right forearm injury) and Mix (bruised ribs) did not break bones, the team announced.
For me, this is the best news to come out of the game.
Wideout Mix Will Miss a Week After Breaking Rib vs. Buffalo (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/10/AR2008081002350.html)
Anthony Mix suffered a broken rib during Saturday's 17-14 preseason win over Buffalo, making his the Redskins' only new injury concern. The reserve wide receiver will miss at least one week. Coach Jim Zorn expects several other players to return for Saturday's game against the Jets, with safety LaRon Landry (hamstring) and wide receiver Devin Thomas (hamstring) among them.
Rookie safety Chris Horton, who missed the game with a colon infection, will be reevaluated this week, as will return specialist-running back Rock Cartwright, who has a rib injury. Landry and Thomas are scheduled to return to full practice this week and could face the Jets. Thomas was Washington's first pick in April's draft (taken in the second round), but has not been on the field since the first week of camp.
??? Ok, I guess the news was not that good? Horton needs to get back on the field as I feel we are a better team with him flying to the ball.
Awkward Moments Are Lessons Learned for the Understudy (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/10/AR2008081000003.html)
The veteran backup quarterback, the toast of the town as recently as January, is now a work in progress. And with his second-string status behind Jason Campbell comes certain occupational hazards, such as relying on a preponderance of novice linemen to keep his 36-year-old legs planted firmly on the ground against the Buffalo Bills in a preseason game at FedEx Field.
No longer the prized pupil of the Redskins' offense -- Collins had spent eight years mastering former offensive coordinator Al Saunders's infinite playbook -- he is feeling his way through Coach Jim Zorn's system, same as everyone else. It's an inherently awkward process: Collins bristled at some of Zorn's unorthodox drills and teaching tools this offseason, team sources said, and struggled in the opening weeks of training camp.
I love Collins and I appreciate him for the stretch run in '07, but to me, bringing him back for 2008 was the single biggest mistake we made in the offseason. At this rate, I am not comfortable with our chances if Campbell isn't in there.
Portis, Betts Impress During Opening Half (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/10/AR2008081000004.html)
Betts ran for 41 yards on five carries, Portis had 18 yards on seven attempts, and each scored a touchdown during the Washington Redskins' 17-14 victory over the Buffalo Bills last night at FedEx Field.
Portis didn't play past the first quarter, and Betts didn't play after the second. For Zorn, however, their play was a welcome sight after both missed last Sunday's preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts.
"Very impressed with our run game," Zorn said. "I was really excited that Clinton Portis came in. You watch as you see the suddenness of his moves, and his ability to move and then re-accelerate, you can see what kind of a special back he really is.
Its offfical. Mason is my "Lumsden"... If we cut that kid, I am going to be FURIOUS. Sitting in the upper deck endzone, I got a great view of how he consistently makes one cut and gets going north-south... We need to carry four HBs and get Mason on the field once in awhile.
