I'm running late for work so hopefully someone can help me pick up the slack.

Redskins break training camp; no new injuries today (http://www.inrich.com/cva/ric/news.apx.-content-articles-RTD-2008-08-14-0248.html)
ASHBURN For the Washington Redskins, it's 39 practices down and none to go in the 2008 training camp.

The Redskins worked out twice today, without pads, for just under two hours in the morning and just over an hour in the afternoon.

They escaped with no new injuries in either session and cut the afternoon session short by about 10 minutes over concern for a thunderstorm that appeared to be rolling into the area.

Even though the pads were off, some of the drills in the morning practice were rather physical, and Redskins coach Jim Zorn was upset about that. The person he was upset with was himself.

This is great news, but what was Zorn thinking?? This is just odd.

Springs experiments with new position (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/aug/15/safety-measures/)
Shawn Springs grew up idolizing Rod Woodson, one of the great cornerbacks of his generation.

In the latter stages of Woodson's career he switched from cornerback to safety. As Springs nears the twilight of his time in the NFL, he also may make that transition in the coming seasons.

"Rod Woodson went from 12 to 17 [years in the league] and had [23 more] picks. [Whistles] ... That would be awesome," Springs said. "I think it might be a natural transition. I've got the size for it. It's just about getting back there and getting used to it. It is still a new position."

Rogers, McIntosh will play against Jets (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/aug/15/rogers-mcintosh-will-play-against-jets/)
"I thought it was going to be September, but we put him in these drills and really watch[ed] how his knee [responded]," Zorn said. "There's been very little that we've had to do other than continue the maintenance program, continue to strengthen it. He does things full-speed in practice, so he should be just fine in the game."

That's also the feeling on McIntosh, who tore his ACL on Dec. 16 against the New York Giants. Like Rogers, he has practiced for a couple of weeks. But unlike Rogers, McIntosh declined to talk until he plays.

"We are going to play McIntosh very little," Zorn said. "Four or five plays to get in there and smack it around a little bit but very little so watch fast."
[B]Devine to start second half

Quarterbacks Jason Campbell and Todd Collins will split the first half against New York, with Campbell playing only a couple of series.

Derek Devine will start the second half, with rookie Colt Brennan finishing the game. That's not a knock on Brennan, though his performance slid considerably against the Bills after a rousing premiere against the Colts. The former Hawaii star remains a heavy favorite to win the No. 3 job over Devine, who is in his second NFL camp.

QUOTABLE

"I put our guys in a little [bit of a] bad situation because I really did a full padded day drill with no pads. Not smart. Not smart."

- Coach Jim Zorn on a coaching mistake Thursday morning

i know it's just a hamstring, but i had hoped Laron was going to be able to avoid this type of thing and be more durable. i hope it is nothing more than "tweaked", but it's sounding more like "torn" than just "strained".

edit: maybe it's a blessing in disguise...at least he's not hitting our own receivers in practice.

i think some of it is keeping him out of harm's way in preseason

That's probably true, and we all expect big things from him this year, but we should remember he is still just going into his second season. While I don't want to see long term injury, he is not yet the type of player we should be protecting from the preseason. He hasn't earned that yet.

I think this is a valid injury concern, and not a Portis-type situation.

I think it's just a part of being a super fast, muscle-bound type of guy. Look at Santana...All those burner type guys always have issues w/ tweaked hammy's. I know I'm always tweaking mine (lol :spy:)

Yes, I agree that I don't see the logic in holding back a second year S. RB, maybe... but there is so much to learn at S.

I am going to reuse this thread for the weekend so pile in your aticles here. I am going to get stuck working tomorrow and probably won't be on.

Camp Caravan: Redskins' Zorn molds a better QB (http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=446042)
When camp was open to fans July 20-28, rabid Redskins rooters were out in force. Now camp is closed, and the vibe is businesslike. The team seems relaxed and focused under new head coach Jim Zorn. A former NFL quarterback and quarterbacks coach, Zorn will bring new offensive wrinkles while being entrusted with developing quarterback Jason Campbell.
• Jason Taylor. Hours after Phillip Daniels was lost to a season-ending knee injury, the Redskins moved aggressively and traded for Taylor. To this point, Taylor, who will turn 34 Sept. 1, has shown no signs of slowing down. If he can still terrorize quarterbacks, the defense will improve. If not, he can at least show teammates some dance moves.

• No big-time free agents. Hard to believe, but the Redskins showed restraint during free agency. Maybe Snyder has finally been convinced to build a team through the draft. If so, the Redskins will be better for it.

• Banged-up defense. Safety LaRon Landry has missed training camp with a nagging hamstring injury. Cornerback Carlos Rogers is coming off major knee surgery, as is linebacker Rocky McIntosh. Cornerback Shawn Springs has a sore Achilles' tendon. If the defense does not get healthy, it will not be very good.

Man I hope Taylor can be the difference this year.

Zorn's work with Campbell could determine whether Campbell develops into an average player or a Pro Bowler. Campbell has all the tools -- big arm, size, solid work ethic. After watching Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren work with Matt Hasselbeck, Zorn believes he knows the right approach to take with Campbell.

"It's like having clay in the potter's hands," Zorn said. "Jason is very moldable, very coachable, like clay. His desire is to be good. My desire is not to make him a brittle piece of clay. My challenge is to mold him the right way, so that his special talents rise to the top in a disciplined fashion. That's what I'm trying to do."

I can't read this article... But I'll post it.

Rookie Punter Brooks Is Hanging Tough Thus Far (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/15/AR2008081503442.html)
Two weeks ago, Redskins rookie Durant Brooks phoned his mentor, retired star punter Ray Guy, before making his NFL debut in the Hall of Fame game. Brooks ended up leaving a voice-mail message, but there is little doubt many legends will be watching him this weekend, his pal Guy among them.
(Guy should be in the Hall.)

Criticism won't curb Suisham's confidence (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/aug/16/criticism-wont-curb-suishams-confidence/)

It was as if the fans' grumbling and the media's questions started just as the ball sailed past the wrong side of the goal post.

Washington Redskins kicker Shaun Suisham missed his first field goal attempt of this exhibition season - the same result he had with his final try of the 2007 campaign. Almost immediately, fans rushed to Internet message boards to opine for another kicker and after one of the team's next practices, reporters quizzed coach Jim Zorn on why there wasn't another kicker in camp to compete with Suisham.

LMAO! Sounds about right.

Redskins vs. Jets / Five Things To Watch (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/aug/16/redskins-vs-jets-five-things-to-watch/)

THE RUNNING BACKS

Ladell Betts had a nice first game last week, and he could push for a little extra playing time. Meanwhile, Marcus Mason can continue his quest for the preseason rushing crown (and more importantly a roster spot) because both Clinton Portis and Rock Cartwright are not expected to play.
