Throw in the practice squad if you're feeling spiffy...

QBs (3): Campbell, Collins and Brennan
No surprises, Devine will get a final chance to play, but at this point, unless he throws 7 TDs in a half, he'll be lucky to be on our practice squad.

RBs (4): Portis, Betts, Rock and Mason
I don't like the idea of keeping Rock but he's going to stay.

WRs (6): Moss, El, Thomas, Kelly, Thrash and McMullen
Gotta keep 6, we have serious injury concerns here. Mix hasn't done anything other than be tall and McMullen may have finally had that light go off.

FB (1): Sellers
No surprises here

TE (3): Cooley, Davis and Yoder
I think this is the last year of Yoder, he's getting old and Jason Goode will marinate on the PS for a year and be ready to take over.

OL (9): Samuel, Kendall, Rabach, Thomas, Jansen, Fabini, Heyer, Rinehart and Crummey
Wade gets the ax and Geisinger and Washington go to the PS.

Offense gets a total 26 spots.

DL (9): Taylor, Carter, Griffin, Montgomery, Golston, Alexander, Evans, James and Jackson
Boschetti gets the cut but is on speed dial and Wilson goes to the practice squad in a bizarre move.

LB (6): Fletcher, Washington, McIntosh, Blades, Campbell and Fincher.
Fletcher is getting old, Washington and McIntosh is injury prone so we gotta keep more here than I think we'd strictly like.

CB (6): Springs, Rogers, Smoot, Torrence, Tryon and Richardson
No surprises here. The Bryon Westbrook experiment extends among much teeth gnashing as he hits the practice squad... Again.

S (3): Landry, Horton and Moore
Doughty is the surprise cut (surprise to everybody but Skins fans) but is picked up by somebody else (surprise to Skins fans). Hamilton gets a job on the practice squad.

The defense gets 24 spots.

ST (3): Albright, Suisham and Brooks.
The frosty era for Washington punters is over. There is much rejoicing in the streets.

Thoughts? Your prediction?

This is my prediction - not necessarily what I want.

Offense - 26 Players
QBs (3): Campbell, Collins and Brennan
RBs (4): Portis, Betts, Rock and Mason
WRs (6): Moss, El, Thomas, Kelly, Thrash and Mix
FB (1): Sellers
TE (3): Cooley, Davis and Yoder
OL (9): Samuel, Kendall, Rabach, Thomas, Jansen, Fabini, Heyer, Rinehart and Geisinger

No real surprises here. Zorn alluded to the fact in a press conference that Geisinger had a spot locked up... Theres no way we let Mason go so we have to keep 4 RBs, even though Mason will be inactive every game unless someone gets hurt... Mix gets the job as 6th receiver for his special teams play. Zorn said McMullen hasnt shown him the burst and quickness he wants, so he's the closest thing to a "surprise" here.

Defense - 24 Players
DL (9): Taylor, Carter, Griffin, Montgomery, Golston, Alexander, Evans, James, and Jackson.
LB (6): Fletcher, Washington, McIntosh, Blades, Campbell and Fincher*.
CB (5): Springs, Rogers, Smoot, Torrence, and Tryon
S (4): Landry, Horton, Moore, and Doughty

I think there is an off-chance Boschetti makes the roster over Jackson or Alexander. Alexander has been unimpressive in camp, Jackson is practice squad eligible, and Boschetti has somehow always managed to stick around. However, since Boschetti is unlikely to be picked up by another team and Taylor is hurt, we go with Jackson for the time being. If Taylor Recovers fully, I think there is a chance Jackson moves to the PS between weeks 2 and 4... I have Fincher as our 6th LB for now, but I think he will be cut and we will pick up a LB cut from someone else's roster...

Special Teams - 3 Players
ST (3): Albright, Suisham and Frost.

I hate to say it, but I think Frost sticks around. If we were going to cut him, we would have done it by now to give him the chance to land with another team. The fact that he's still here leads me to beleive he has the edge on the job - no matter how much that makes me want to vomit. Brooks will have to have a stellar game and Frost will need a horrible performance for the Frost era to finally end.

You say you have 5 CBs in parentheses but you have 6 listed. It looks like you added with the 6th CB so you have 53 players actually listed. But I can't argue too much with any of it...

This is my prediction - not necessarily what I want.

[[/I]

i think Frost could still be gone. i know it would be nice to let him go sooner so he has a better chance to catch on somewhere else, but i also think a punter can catch on anywhere at any time. it's not like they have to "learn a system", and it is more important to see this competition thru to the end, rather than to be nice to either punter.

Also, i think Boschetti makes it, and Jackson goes to the PS.

great article by Ross Tucker about guys getting released or making the team at this time of year.

there are certain guys who i would feel really bad for if they get cut. Derrick Frost wouldnt be one of them.

It was a great article, but one aspect tucker failed to mention was that if the players were any good, another team would pick them up. If they werent, then they still got to experience something that 99.99% of people can ever dream of. I'd give anything to be able to step onto a field in a preseason game and wear a redskins uniform. All of these guys who are about to get cut have lived a dream... even if for just a little while. and they get paid pretty well (by everyday standards) for it.

Offense (26):

QB (3) - Campbell, Collins, Brennan
RB (4) - Portis, Betts, Mason, Cartwright
FB (1) - Sellers
OL (9) - Samuels, Kendall, Rabach, Thomas, Jansen, Rinehart, Heyer, Fabini, Geisinger (Wade goes on PUP list while Crummey and Washington go on PS)
WR (6) - Moss, Randle El, Thrash, Thomas, Kelly, McMullen (the minute either Thomas or Kelly can contribute, McMullen is gone for a defensive player)
TE (3) - Cooley, Davis, Yoder

Defense (24):

DL (9) - Carter, Golston, Griffin, Taylor, Montgomery, Evans, James, Jackson, Boschetti (Ryan the "roach" survives another cut over Alexander, while Wilson signs with another team)

LB (6) - McIntosh, Fletcher, Washington, Campbell, Blades, Fincher(the minute another outside backer better than Fincher appears on somebody else's cut list, that player will replace Fincher here)

DB (9) - Springs, Rogers, Smoot, Torrence, Tryon, Landry, Moore, Horton, Doughty (Tryon survives only because it's easier for the free agent Richardson to clear waivers and be placed on the PS)

ST (3):

Suisham, Albright, Brooks (Frost punted well last week but the job was Brooks to lose and he has done nothing to lose it)

Offense
QB(3) Campbell, Collins, Brennan
RB(4) Portis, Betts, Mason, Cartwright
FB(1) Sellers
OL(9) Samuels, Kendall, Rabach, Thomas, Jansen, Rinehart, Heyer, Fabini, Geisinger
WR(6) Moss, Randle El, Thrash, Thomas, Kelly, Mix
If mix has one catch tonight he will make this team, he can actually contribute to special teams, McMullen made a case to add a second younger version of thrash to the team, but that case got "dropped" when he dropped all those passes
TE(3) Cooley, Davis, Yoder

Defense
DL(9) Carter, Golston, Griffin, Taylor, Montgomery, Evans, James, Alexander, Jackson
Alexander makes the team because he can also contribute to oline if need be, with taylor injured jackson secures a roster spot
LB(6) McIntosh, Fletcher, Washington, Campbell, Blades, Fincher
CB(5) Springs, Rogers, Smoot, Torrence, Tryon
I think we reluctantly keep tyron simply because they are scared someone will pick him up if put on the practice squad
Safety(4) Landry, Moore, Horton, Doughty

Special Teams
Suisham, Albright, Brooks

Practice Squad
Devine, Washington, Richardson,Crummey, Clark

I agree that there is a high likelyhood that we pick up some other linebackers off other teams' cut list

Offense gets a total 25 spots.

QBs (3): Campbell, Collins, and "Six-Shooter" Brennan
RBs (4): Portis, Betts, Rock and Mason
FB (1): Sellers
TE (3): Cooley, Davis and Yoder
OL (9): Samuels, Kendall, Rabach, Thomas, Jansen, Fabini, Heyer, Rinehart and Geisinger.
Geisinger over Crummey purely because he can backup at C.

WRs (5): Moss, El, Thomas, Kelly, Thrash
If there is something really wrong with Kelly they might IR him in which case McMullet gets a chance. With Davis developing as a big target at TE, I don't think we keep 6. I also doubt anyone will sign McMullen or Mix unless there are injuries - so they will be around if needed.

The defense gets 25 spots.

DL (10): Taylor, Carter, Griffin, Montgomery, Golston, Alexander, Evans, James, Wilson and Jackson

Surprise we keep 10! Wish there was room for Boschetti, but Alexander's versatility wins the spot. Wilson has shown he can play (5 sacks). Jackon has a motor and may draw interest if on PS - esp. from the Giants (ugh). Injury concerns' w/ Taylor have us overloading these positions and making up for weak CBs by trying to maintain a rush w/ fresh body rotation.

LB (6): Fletcher, Washington, McIntosh, Blades, Campbell and Fincher.

I think Fincher earned the 6th spot. He plays with passion.

CB (4): Springs, Rogers, Smoot, Torrence.

Small surprise: Tryon to PS. The boy does not look ready against ANY NFL competition. In case of injury they can use Landry in a pinch. Tryon, Richardson or Westbrook *may* get promoted some time during the season, but they are not worth a roster spot.

S (5): Landry, Moore, Horton, Doughty, Hamilton
Small suprise, there are simply more Safeties deserving of spots than CBs.
Safeties often make the best special teamers with combination fo speed and tacking, and that is the value for Doughty and Hamilton. Hamilton's spot may be threatened if a good vet comes over the waiver wire.

Special Teams gets 3

ST (3): Albright, Suisham and Frosty.
Could go either way on Frosty, but Suisham gets a vote for his holder.
Frosty stepped up to the competition and in a close competion, like in boxing, ties go to the incumbent.

Practice Squaq (5 VERY fluid spots)
OL - Crummey
CB - Richardson, Tryon - just because we spent a $#@%#@ 4th rounder on him. Westbrook did nothing to warrant consideration.
LB - Gatewood showed some flashes and Marcus W. is getting older
For 5th spot can't decide betweet T. Washington (OL) or Mix (WR).

So surprise summary - we only keep 5 WR, 4 CB and 10 DLs, Tryon on PS, Frosty hangs on.
We watch the wires for CB help - Ricky Manning if we can afford him.

Eramus James did not overly impress me last night, unfortunately. Even against their substitutes, he did not own his position as I had hoped. Jackson, at times, shows some explosiveness but some rookie blunders, too.

I would take McMullen over the others. However, it is possible -if the rules permit it - that Kelly goes to IR and the Redskins go find another receiver. The others are not good enough to help the team significantly.

Horton, I think is a keeper.

Tyron is gone. Even though he was covering the persons last night, he was just too small. He is not effective.

Hamilton made a number of nice plays, but probably will not make it.

Mason looked more average last night, but still a good rb. But with the needs so big in other areas, I am not sure the Redskins can afford the luxury of four rb and 1 fb. I think it will come down to either Mason or Cartwright. That opens an extra slot for one of the lines. Or, it will allow the Redskins to keep Fincher, who helped his case last night.

The team is not going to chose between Rock and Mason, unless they can trade Betts. Also, we don't need an extra spot to keep fincher. Most teams that run a 4-3 keep 6 LBs and Fincher is our 6th LB. He's a lock right now.
