One of the Post articles was praising Smoot for leading the team in tackles yesterday. To me that means the reciver he was covering caught too many balls on him. What do you guys think of Smoots play yesterday?

I think it slipped a little bit, however it was decent.

Smoot wasn't too bad yesterday. He's not a great cornerback and some weeks he isn't even good. He was decent yesterday, facing a good wideout and a good quarterback who faced almost no pressure on virtually every play. I think Smoot sacked up and I admire him for it.

I thought he did terrible...

Everytime Hilliard got a catch, I turned around in my seat at Fed Ex and made a comment to Keino. I ended up doing that 7 times during the game. (UGH!)

Smoot covered Hilliard...who had seven catches and 2 TDs. You NEVER let your opponent's #2 catch that many balls!

Yeah, I thought he had a lousy game as well.

I don't think he played that good yesterday. OK but did thing to hurt us as did a slew of others.

Actually, I thought Bailey was burned for both touchdowns. Smoot actually made some tackles, although he looks like Deion Sanders when he does tackle.

I agree, both Smoot AND Bailey played poorly yesterday. Maybe Champ was worst but Smoot plays bad more often.

Guys, no pass rush makes the best cornerbacks look ordinary. Before judging a cornerback, you've got to take the pass rush into account. Not even the greatest can cover forever and forever is about how much time Collins had to throw yesterday.

Point well taken.

Not sure I can judge Smoot as not being a great CB yet... but I did notice that he seemed to be playing WELL OFF his coverage WR... I wasnt sure if that was due to his cloudy head or his fear of being burned... but either way... the WR (usually Hilliard) just seemed to catch ball after ball and then jig for some more yards each time.

Come on Freddie.. get in there and bat some away!

He played better then Champ if you count TD's given up.

The "pressure on the QB" comments can swing the other direction if we ever do get some sacks they could turn into "coverage sacks", announcers label those like they dont mean the same

This is why I wouldn't sweat resigning Champ if we can get some D-line picks out of it. We need to pressure the opposing QB into making bad throws that average db's will pick off.

Hubbo and I thought Smoot was off yesterday. He did have 7 tackles but...

(I thought Ramsey wasn't throwing his usual heat either.)

Also, I think the heat (and I mean the temp. this time) may have been a factor in the first half.

I didn't think Smoot had a good game. I remember someone sitting near me (I think it was NamVet) pointing out that while Champ was usually playing about six yards off his reciever when the ball was snapped, Smoot would be nine or ten yards back. They could throw underneath him all day.
