Because I live in the Philly area this team is by far my most hated team. 50% of their fans at the stadium will be pure idiots. The idiocy is fanned by an obnoxios local sports radio station, 610 WIP.
But I digress- My question is how to be control the Eagle blitzes and exploit them to our advantage. I am worried they are going to cause Jason to fumble with the blitz. On defense I think we could cause a lot of trouble for McNabb if we get Jason Taylor back. Anyone know if Jason is going to play this Sunday?

I'm in Iggle country as well and right now the radio talk I've heard is all about the Phillies, but I'm waiting for them to start in on the Skins.
And I'm not expecting Taylor to play this weekend. I say keep him out until he's close to 100%.
Edit: small world, we both live in Swedesboro!

A Monday after a Skins win and Eagles loss makes WIP much better to listen. I was expecting much more whining about the Eagles but they were talking lots of Phillies. I will be at the game on Sunday. I wish just once we could blow these guys out and have all the Eagle bums headed to the exit signs by halftime.
chicago looked like they found a way to exploit that Eagle blitiz with some long throws. The problem is that any way you slice it they will sack Campbell. Jason has to make sure he hangs onto the football.
Edit: Actually Woolwch Twp but Swedesboro/ Woolwich are the same thing anyway

They
re going to blitz. Early and often - that's nothing new. JC has to recognize where its coming from (hopfully) and hit his hot receivers..... I'm more concerned with containing Westbrook and not letting their offense get rolling. The Dallas/Chicago games proved they can be scored on - we just have to make sure their offense doesn't keep the same pace as ours......

There was a play on Sunday where Jason looked like he stepped right into the pressure causing a sack. I think sometimes a QB can help the O-line by not always stepping up in the pocket. Against the Eagle Blitz I think we need more shotgon, some gadget plays etc to throw them off balance

there is little certainty that westbrook will play, much less be close to 100 %.. andrews will probably still be out... ditto curtis.. on the other hand, the philly sites are saying that L J Smith looks like he should play.. still early in the week...

It is still early. I wouldn't put it past Reid to hold out on naming people until last minute so we don't have as much time to game plan. :-)

what i read was that he prepared and warmed up and was a "no go" as of then .... westbrook apparently decided himself at that time....one way or the other, even if he plays, i dont think he will be close to 100 % and i doubt they use him as extensively as they usually do..
on the other hand, we have been thoroughly torched by a "less than 100%"
plaxico burress so they better be ready for westbrook to be a significant part of the offense.. i do like having horton and potentially, moore to be in the secondary to contain and cover westbrook.. altheticsm matters a whole lot..

Reid said he was fine to play the past sunday, but held him out for precautions
These were the quotes from Reid on Monday.
On whether he expects Westbrook to practice Wednesday:
"I don't know that. We'll have to see how he does here these two days. If he had to practice today, he wouldn't be able to do it."
On whether Westbrook is in the same place with the injury as he was at this time last week:
"No. He's better than -- well, if he misses practices, yeah. As far as how he feels, he feels better, yeah."

My question is how to be control the Eagle blitzes and exploit them to our advantage. I am worried they are going to cause Jason to fumble with the blitz.
The best way to control the blitz is two ways:
1. Run the football. If Portis can get through the initial wave, he could have a monster day.
2. Screens and quick hitting routes.

absolutely so...and jansen will start. the comments by zorn that heyer "re-injured" himself provide cover for leaving jansen in..

Lots of Cooley. Might not be a bad call to have Davis active either, although trusting him on anything other than a route could be dangerous.
Philly will try to collapse the middle of the line and use their outside speed to keep contain. If Portis can get inside then there'll be yards available, but the stretch plays will be tough to get outside on.

we have to play jansen so we can run vs the iggles and contain westbrook let mcintosh cover him a little(did a great job vs bush) i think lj smith may be out and the corners need to play like last week.
as for as jason taylor goes i dont see him coming back until the browns game

cp screens, and that tight end screen to cooley we have seen will do wonders. they are going to blitz and there ends are real nice. samuel's is a great corner, very smart, but takes chances like springs. very susceptible to the double move and doesn't have the speed to make up for it.
shotgun formation more then 3 step drops. the eagle defense is confusing for even the most veteran QB. for jason its hard, plus the new system. he 3 step drop campbell he will have a hard time finding the hot route and the blitz will confuse him. shotgun gives him a extra second and he has a wider sight of the field. i think we will see alot more shotgun then we have seen to begin the season.

This game actually worries me a bit more than the Dallass game did (I'm confident we're still gonna win) because of how aggressive Philly's D is, but their aggressiveness often comes back to bite them in the behind. I just won't be surprised to have our first offensive turnover this game. Only Desean Jackson and BW worry me on their offense.

philly has made a living over the years of causing redskin turnovers that win games for them. play them even up in turnovers and i think we win, but on the road, we cannot afford to allow them to take the ball away. philly has been uncanny in converting those turnovers into points. this will be a huge game for JC to show how much he has grown in that regard..

there has got to be a way to burn their defense. We should start right off with pass from Randel El. Something to completely throw off that blitzing defense. Campbell needs to try some rollouts and run for few first downs. I noticed they are always blitzing the linebackers in the A gaps which should mean if you can escape that there are some big plays.

I said it before the DallASS, we're going to win this game. The way you beat the blitz is with the WCO. Those quick slants are money makers. If the iggles blitz early they will get torched early. Truth is, they'd be better off NOT blitzing and trying to win straight-up b/c JC, Moss, CP and Cooley will make them eat that blitz.
Though tough, I'm not worried about this game. We haven't even reached our optimal play yet. This game will be another notch in that, "I've just created a monster belt." We're literally getting stronger every week. I'm so proud of my Skins.

No way this should be considered a trap game. Its within the division against an always tough opponent. If anything, the Rams game would be a trap game. Playing a reeling team with a new coach fresh off their bye week at home. Yeah, that's a Marion Berry type set up, lol.

Def agree with Rams being the trap game. Phili's always tough, no matter how depleted, and as tough as the division is this year, I don't think any divisional game can be considered a trap.
Now if we make it to 4-1, confidence high, against a desperate Rams team in disarray... could spell trouble. They have talent, just no Oline.

I think JC will struggle in comparison to the last 3 games. Philly's blitzing and tight coverage is nasty.
They key is JC not turning the ball over and our wr's being agressive on the tight pressure release throws.
I actually think this is a game where Cooley could catch 8-9 balls and Devin Thomas with his size could be a huge factor.
Philly has smaller faster corners. Santana's quick moves aren't as likely to fool Samuel's. JC had better be very careful with the ball.
Portis will be huge, how he's going will be how we're going. The eagles lb's are playing out of their minds. Portis out of the backfield and in blitz pick up will be a huge factor.
I expect a very tough nasty hard hitting affair.
I'm not exactly scared of the Philly offense they'll get some things but they have some injuries to Andrews and the te along with mcnabb and Westbrook.
I like Smoot matching up with jackson. Rogers on Brown.
We should blitz alot this game. Put some hits on Mcnabb.

Coming off a huge road win over the #1 rival and a whole lot of confidence and now going into a dangerous divisional game against a very powerful but desperate team.
I don't know about the classic trap game - it's more of the set up for a big let down type of game to me. If that's a trap game then I'm right there with you buddy.
All I know it's a game the Skins are going to have to play PERFECT ball in all three phases and have a flawless game plan for. A little bit of luck wouldn't hurt either.

In a place not so far away and not so long ago, the Eagles are once again bordering on the edge of respectability. Our Beloved Team is proving the pundits wrong in their pre-season and early season predictions and comments. Though it is early and certainly not a time for Super Bowl aspirations, the Eagles find themselves in the same place as they were last season: last place with an even record. Health issues continue to hold back the Eagles' offense. Pro Bowl running back Brian Westbrook missed the Chicago game with a strained ankle. Perhaps, just Coach Reid being overly cautious! And it's not certain if he'll be able to play against Washington. Back spasms that forced Pro Bowl right guard Shawn Andrews out in Week 2 aren't improving, and surgery might be his only option. With Westbrook and Andrews sidelined, the Eagles' offense has sputtered.
The Eagles may survive without Shawn Andrews. They need Brian Westbrook back on the field. He's the epicenter of the offense, and when he's out, there's too much pressure on Donovan McNabb to make all the big plays. That pressure plays to the Redskins benefit! McNabbs health and performance is like the weekly lottery – always a guess as to where the numbers will go. Westbrook's replacement, Correll Buckhalter, got banged up against the Bears and won't be at full strength if he has to start against Our Beloved team. Third-string back Lorenzo Booker hasn't found his way regularly in the team's offense yet – or on the field for that matter.
McNabb is relying heavily on rookie DeSean Jackson to get those third-and-longs. Reggie Brown has gradually been integrated back into the lineup. Now the onus is on head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg to put their heads together and figure out a game plan that get McNabb's receivers open downfield.
Our Beloved Team has a priority mission this week. Keep Donovan McNabb in the pocket. McNabb doesn't run as much as he used to, but he has beaten Our Beloved Team as often with his legs as he has with his arm. The Redskins can't let him move around in the backfield to buy time while Jackson tries to get open. (The operative word is “try”!). Push the pocket into his face and keep him as uncomfortable as possible as often as possible.
And while our Defense disrupts the Eagles the game key lies with the Offense! The Redskins have big-play ability in their offense, but playing the Eagles always is a physical, brutal encounter. The best way to take the starch out of the Eagles' defense is to move the ball consistently against it. The Redskins' offensive line has to get a strong push off the ball, and Coach Zorn has to be willing to keep pounding the ball even if the yards are tough and limited early. Jason Campbell needs all his weapons, especially deep threat Santana Moss.
The deep threat Of Santana Moss will worry the Eagles, as it rightfully should. However, the Eagles are masters of the “The Blitz”. They send their linebackers from all different angles. Running backs Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts have to be alert. Coach Zorn has to set up more motion to get receivers such as James Thrash and Chris Cooley in position to check for incoming linebackers and defensive backs before going out on their routes.
Eagles Defensive Coordinator Jim Johnson is the Master at pressuring the quarterback, which has led to interceptions and fumble recoveries. But Campbell hasn't thrown an interception yet this season, and Our Beloved Team has just one give away, tied for fewest in the NFL. The Eagles will try to make Jason Campbell scramble in the pocket and take advantage of errant passes or loose grips.
Our Beloved Team faces another NFC East opponent that demands a victory to continue their aspirations of a playoff season. The time is now, the place is determined; the game is the game!

I for one am worried about the game, but I feel good about it. What concerns me most is what we've seen out of this team the last few years. The Let-down. I am hoping this team can come out with the same sort of intensity, because right now the eagles are like a wounded animal with its back against the wall. We need to be able to withstand the first punch and ready to counter-punch.
This game affords a GREAT opportunity to put 2 games of distance between us and Philly and Set-up 2 very winnable home games with the potential to be 6-1 headed to another winnable road game in Detroit. 7-1 would be a most unexpected start for us and would have us in prime position to get a home playoff game......not to get to far ahead of ourselves, but I think winning at Philly this week will really catapult this team.
In celebration of the Eagles game, I am Frying a Turkey. Some nice Fried Bird to go with the Frying the Birds seems appropriate.....

This game reminds me of the first Giants game of last year. Beat the Giants and put them in a hole that will be tough to dig out of.
If we beat the Iggles, that gives them three loses against NFC teams and two within the division.

That is a great analogy! The Eagles will punch hard with the defense and try to jab with their limited offense. Smart coaching and smart palyer execution will deter their efforts!

According to his brother, Brian Westbrook's injury is more serious than the Eagles are letting on and he probably won't play sunday.
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/
very interesting.. in the same series of articles it looks more problematic for heyer AND jason taylor is even talking about possibly playing !!! that would truly be amazing if he does...
Some nice Fried Bird to go with the Frying the Birds seems appropriate.....
this is a HUGE game.. we can really make things tough on the eagles if we win. again, this team seems different from prior redskin teams, so i hope they have a new killer instinct to plant a team when it is down a little...

That is a great analogy! The Eagles will punch hard with the defense and try to jab with their limited offense. Smart coaching and smart palyer execution will deter their efforts!
More than appropriate! With this being the early game, I am looking forward to a victory meal for late afternoon / early evening enjoyment!

I fried one on my friends apt balcony once... no fires, but looking back, probably not the smartest thing to do.
By all accounts we should win this game, because unlike before, we're actually playing to win. As much as I love Gibbs, in his 2nd term, he played not to lose. We'd have an excellent 1st half, and flounder it. Zorn goes for the kill. Much appreciated.

except for the final drive last week, when zorn obviously decided to drain the clock and make it a 2 possession game with a FG, zorn has aggressively gone for the win any chance he has gotten. in that sense, even last week, zorn was still going for the win based on a calculation of odds.. he was right
still, it is fun to watch this team try and put other teams in a hole rather than play keep away

I accede to your point Shally... If the deep throws are the hard punch for the Eagle offense...It just seems to me that that combo may be the only offensive weapon that the Eagles can come out punching with!

I think this game, more than any this season, will prove what kind of team we are. We've shown improvement every week, but if we don't build on our success from last week, the Dallas victory could be looked back on as just being a fluke. We could be bound for mediocrity like we have the past 15 years. On the other hand, if we can go into Philly and do to them what we did to Dallas, then we send a statement to the NFL and to ourselves that we are a real deal. If we win this game, i feel confident (barring a slew of serious injuries) our momentum will carry us through the rest of the season and we will secure homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. If we lose, I can see our team losing confidence and regressing to the point where we would be neck and neck with the other NFC-East teams fighting for a wild card slot. We can't just beat the eagles Sunday. We need to manhandle them.

Not to drag the thread too far off topic, but I have been frying my own Birds since last Thanksgiving and have done 3 or 4. I am at the point where I have sort of mastered my technique, even though the first one I did was FANTASTIC.
Absolutely fry it outside. I live in FL, so nothing terribly inconvenient about that. I fry it a good 25 feet from my house in my Driveway, and I keep a fire Extinguisher close by.
A big key for preventing fires, and people don't know this is the type of oil used. Peanut Oil is the preferred oil, because it can withstand higher temps than Veg Oil or even Canola Oil before burning. Another Big Key is to make sure there is NO Water on the Bird. Finally, the way it is inserted into the Turkey fryer makes a big difference.
Ideally you fry the bird at about 375 Degrees. But, since the Temperature will drop as soon as you put the bird in, I've found that inserting the bird between 400 and 425 is the Optimum.
The real key to a good fird turkey though, is how you inject it and what you inject it with. I always Use Tony Cachere's Injectibles and I always Rub my bird down with a mixture of Home-made essence and Tony Chachere's Creole Seasoning.
Sorry for the fried turkey distraction, back to our regularly schedule Eagle watch......

The Eagles will show us something we haven't seen yet this year: a speedy gamebreaker at WR. Jackson, while only a rook, has serious jets. If we can get physical with him, maybe get LaRon to tattoo him a couple of times, we can get him out of his game.
On the plus side, without their best O-lineman, we should be able to continue out trend of getting pressure up the middle and stipping the inside run with our DTs. Griffin is reminding me of how good he really is when healthy. Golston is better than he looked in preseason and is getting good penetration and pursues with great motor until the whistle. I don't really care if we sack Donovan but getting him uncomfortable in the pocket anticipating hits would be nice. His lack of accuracy should take care of the rest from there.
On defense, Jim Johnson is money for the Eagles. I hate that guy because I respect him as the best DC in the game these last few years. That said, one area where we have excelled in recent weeks is blitz pick-up. If we can get that defense off-balance like we did dallass, throwing when they think run, running when they think pass, we can ring up points on these guys like dallass did. They are not as physical up front as the vagiants or dallass.
We will also have to be on our game on Teams. Jackson is a dangerous return man and has had success already this year. Losing on a teams score would really be a low point.

First of all: WIP 610 was the sports station that booed when McNabb was drafted.
Second: Westbrooke is the centerpiece of this offense. Without him they are much diminished. If he's not playing, then McNugget will have a much harder time. He's inconsistent , but if given lots of time he can hurt us.
I was at the game when McNabb played against us the first time. Now they'll see a younger version with Jason. They'll see a younger version of their coach.

Their right Guard Shawn Andrews isn't going to play. that should help us. The fact that WIP sent a bus up to the NFL draft to boo the selection of McNabb epitomizes the idiocy that is an Eagle fan. They should not be allowed to win a championship in any sport. ever!

If he plays, I highly doubt he'll be 100%, which should slow him down a great deal, and hopefully mess with his cutbacks. Without his speed and shiftyness, he's a mere mortal. If he comes out like a bat out of hell, then he is the second coming of Lucifer, and we should cower in fear.
DeSean Jackson is speedy and needs to get hit. Jammed hard by Los, and hit very, very, very hard by Landry. Welcome him to the nfl properly.

I hope Westbrook don't play. Going up there is tough in the first place. Don't forget we won there last year and hopefully can repeat. Exploiting their blitz is obviously the most important part of this game. JC is gonna have to fire the ball quickly and hold on to it when he gets hit. I just hope the skins treat this game as if they are underdogs and not over confident. Dallas was overconfident last week and we all know how that turned out. Its not the end of the world if Jason Taylor doen't play. We won without him.

I actually think this will be JC's toughest game yet. Eagles D is no joke, and while I hope it doesn't happen, I wouldn't be surprised to see JC's first pick. Smart decisions and holding on to the ball is key. Rabach needs to give him all the help he can get with adjusting the line for the blitz pick up, and we might see less of Cooley as receiver. Hard to tell with Zorn though.. this is very much a different offense. With Jansen starting, neutralizing the blitz with the run will be key. I have a feeling this will be a low scoring, hard hitting game. Eagles are desperate, and won't go down easy.

Thats absolutley true. Their defense is fast. I would think screens, gadget plays and quick slants should back them off a little.

Hysterical.
Maybe people view/define "trap game" differently, but here is where Zorn gets a chance to differenciate himeself. Gibbs got off to good starts. Gibbs beat dallass... Can Zorn drive the nail in the coffin like we so often failed to do the past four years (not just in the schedule, but also in the course of a game).

I want to see lots of two tight end sets this week. I think campbell is going to be forced to dump the ball off a lot and this might be the way to play it. Lets finally get davis involved. Let these guys chip block off the line and then go out for the quick catch with lots of yac. The defense can key in on moss and we can throw it underneath to cooley, davis, yoder, sellers and betts.
It would be nice to sac mcnabb a bunch of times, but we absolutely need to contain him. Westbrook always kills us, if we can stop westbrook then we can stop this defense. Lets trust our defensive backs to shutdown their guys and key in on westbrook and contain mcnabb. This would be a huge win.

If he plays I don't think we'll see him until late in the 2nd quarter or after a half time adjustment. I think they'll see what happens with Yoder first, as his blocking will be critical against a blitzing eagles D, and hopefully free up Cooley to play some receiver. Zorn's creative though.. I'm worried about turnovers. If we hold onto the ball, we've got a great shot at this game.
I'm also a bit worried because, although it's week 5, this game can really define our season. If we win this one, people will stop picking against us every single week. We'll be one of those "teams to beat."
Lots of pressure.
Not the end of the world if we lose, but a *huge* statement if we win.

i am looking forward to Zorn's creativity in this game. his game plans have been good, but we will be tested by possibly the most feared defense in the league (tho the titans, and ravens are still up there).
i think alot of us around here were a little worried about the cowboys pressure but knew if we gave campbell a couple extra seconds he would shred there secondary.
not so with the eagles. they are more exotic, discipline, have better players (imo), have more heart, will be desperate, and have a better DC.
This is very different then the other games this year as far as what we see them do on defense. i am looking forward to seeing what zorn's plan is for this game and what he adjust to and from in this game.
If he is succesful we may have a offensive genius on our hands. if he doesn't, i am not throwing him to the wolves yet but other teams will duplicate the eggles and bring pressure from everywhere. ( i have read they have 26 blitz packages they worked on this week. i also read the NFL average, tho not a official stat of course, is around 3-4 with 6 being aggressive)

other teams cant bring the pressure the eagles can simply because JJ has been doing this with the same schemes for years.. his players just know what they are doing.. besides, philly has far better secondary players than dallas had.
still, zorn knows exactly what he is in for in this game .. JC has played the eagles before so this wont be new for him. he is going to need to be very poised and disciplined and get the ball out on time. he has to get his hot reads correct and take care of the ball..
if we dont turn it over, we win.. it is that simple
the other thing is to treat westbrook (if he actually plays) the same way we treated reggie bush.. get a lot of bodies on him in a hurry.. bury him at the point.. i just dont see him cutting back the way he usually does because of his ankle injury. even so, he is dangerous as they come..

the more i think about it, the more i believe that turnovers will decide the game tomorrow.
because of that, the key question is whether Zorn and his offensive staff-- and by extension- Campbell are ready for the Philly blitz packages ?
the good thing is that JC has seen this more than once. the bad thing is that it wont be the same because Johnson will come up with a whole new group of packages..
the o line and backs have to be really sharp.. on the other hand, i bet that zorn has put in some plays just designed to catch philly overloaded one way or the other.. we might see more rolls, boots, misdirections.. also an assortment of screens, slants and draws designed to make the eagles pay..
it should be exciting...

According to the NFL Network this a.m., Westbrook is supposed to play today. Don't know how effective he will be but it certainly complicates things for the Skins. I just pray Springs is able to play as well - getting physical with Jackson is the only way to stop him, IMO.
I agree that turnovers will be key for this game. If we control drives like we did in Dallas I think we have good chance of winning.
