I believe he had the same coverage assignment on that play that he had on the interception, where he has to cover the underneath zone. The only problem was that on that play, Witten split the seam and the CB played straight over the top of the WR, and not between the two. I'm not certain who ultimately bears responsibility for that blown assignment/coverage scheme, but it was clear after that point that Washington was unable to hang in coverage. Witten demanded a CB whenever he was split out wide, and Smoot made a very nice deflection in a 3rd and 6 situation after switching coverage assignments with Rocky right before the snap.

A. Witten wasn't split wide. he was in the tightend spot.

B. Your right, i re-watched the game and as soon as the ball is snapped he ran, like on the interception to the underneath coverage. I think maybe landry had Cover 1 responsibility and romo looked right and came back left, not giving landry enough time to move back left.

C. with that being said....

horton says he had "key role" on the two touchdowns including witten. im not sure his role, but apparently he did miss a read or something.

agreed you can't learn on the bench, but you can't give up TD's either. a delicate balancing act is needed. but the kid does have potential.

If they had them in white I'd get one. I don't care much for the burgundy jerseys.

you know whats funny about that. is how we got the player determines the color of jersey i get. If we get him through free agency/trade its white (portis, moss). if its draft or the guy started out with us, i.e. heyer then its burgandy (Sean, carlos, campbell, cooley, maybe a heyer next year if he proves he is a long term starter.)

kinda dumb right?

Before you said anything about that, I was going to say watch Horton's interview from Monday. He clearly states he had a big role in 2 of the Cowboys TDs.

What I love about him is the speed and and athleticism he plays with. Knowing where to be is great and all, but the critical question is now that you know, can you get there? He has shown me that he can get there and when masters the knowing part he will be a helluva player.

It's nice to see the Front Office hit such a home run on a late pick.

I was really impressed with this kid in the PS. The fact that he's starting after 3 games in the NFL is pretty amazing considering his draft number.

I'm getting Horton's jersey because I believe this kid has a long-term future on this team. A very bold statement but I bought a Cooley jersey early his rookie year; so I'm taking the same shot now.

If I get five years out of a jersey [i.e., the player is still on the team] I feel like I've beaten the average.

Not at all. Kinda cool if you ask me. Never thought about it like that.

I wish they had white jerseys from our throwback era.

I wish that we would rock those 50th anniversary jerseys full time, with the deeper burgundy and the arrows on the sleeve.

I got an authentic #21 Taylor jersey for Christmas last year and that thing is sweet.

Didn't they sell those for the Giants game last year? I got my Cooley Jersey the day before the game and it was a white throwback.

I meant our 75th year anniversary throw backs.

Those jerseys from last were tight as well.

In watching the game again, he definitely had a role in the Whitten TD (Dallass did a great job of overloading our short coverage) but I don't think I can assign blame to him in particular. Both he and Fletcher were out of position in the flat leaving nobody on Barber and nobody over the top of Whitten.

As for the TD that TO scored, Landry has supposed to be over the top of TO, so I can't blame Horton for that. And on the last TD, Horton was covering a different receiver and Doughty was just awful in coverage.

When Dallas sent Jones in Motion on the Witten TD, it looked to me like there was confusion as to who was to go with him. In listening to Horton, he implies that his mistake was going out in the flat on Jones when he should have picked up the over the top coverage on Witten. Marcus looked bad, but he was properly playing a trail technique which is used for just that situation.

Sometimes you just have to give the other side (coaches and players) credit for getting into the right match-up. Maybe a more experienced Horton makes a better read on the play.

I am not sure which of the other 2 TDs Horton was referring to when he said he had a big role in the other one. I am thinking that it is the TO TD, but it looked to me like Springs was matched up 1 on 1 and just got beat on a crossing pattern/drag route coupled with a great catch. That was a play we missed Sean Taylor, who would have most certainly separated TO from the ball. (Plus TO would have been looking for him and likely would have gotten alligator arms)

I thought that too until I reviewed the play and saw Fletcher motioning and calling to Horton to pick up Jones. Since Hortion go over there late, Fletcher just stayed there. That left 2 guys in the left flat covering Jones and nobody in the middle to help with Whitten. Also, Barber (Fletcher's default responsibility) was wide open in the right flat.

Sometimes you just have to give the other side (coaches and players) credit for getting into the right match-up. Maybe a more experienced Horton makes a better read on the play.
Agreed 100%. It was a well designed play. No doubt Horton was confused as to who to cover but it seems that there were several people on defense who were confused, as well. I'm surprised they didn't do more 2 back sets this way, honestly.

I couldn't agree more. Landry had a bead on him and then let up. I have no idea why. You need to make TO and other opposing WR fear the middle of the field.

Not too shabby for the 4th to last pick in the entire draft. Who was the player we lost to get that comp pick? Was it Lloyd?
